You will always sizzle and that is what makes you great.
I get it. You’re 13, your body is hot to the touch, and it’s hard to make friends. Since you were born, you’ve found people that you really feel a connection with who then spurn you when you reveal your secret of your burning hot flesh.
It’s unbelievable isn’t it? When you’re young you find something about yourself that you love. Something that makes you feel special. And then when you share it with someone else and they disapprove, you do everything you can to hide that part of yourself. The thing that truly makes you, you, is what you waste the happiest days of your youth trying to suppress.
So 13 year old Morpheus, it’s me, Beeg Morpheus. I need you to know that everything will be okay. I’m writing to tell you that we’ve made it to the DSFL and tomorrow we’ll hopefully be drafted into the ISFL. But without spoiling too much of your life to come, I’m really writing this to tell you that it’s not just okay to be sizzling but instead it’s good to be sizzling.
Remember when you were 11 years old and you started playing stick ball with Orpheus? What a game! The pitcher throws a nerf football from the center of the drive way towards the batter who then hits it with a whiffle bat. The hitter runs to the end of the drive way and back, trying to not get hit by the pitcher who concurrently runs to grab and throw the nerf ball at the hitter. Maybe that’s not how stick ball is supposed to be played but that’s the game you and your twin brother, your best friend, made up. And those games of stick ball are among the happiest moments of your life.
There’s probably a book out there describing more formal rules of stick ball but the game you made with Orpheus is the game that helped form you. It is an authentic game. Authenticity will drive you towards greatness, success, and happiness.
Authenticity is the hardest quality to find within yourself and within others. When you show someone your sizzling hot skin, your vulnerability is authenticity. And when someone responds with fascination and care, take that as an authentic response. Those people who are good to you, who are authentic, are the ones who will make your life all the better. The ones who feign interest or are grossed out or scared of you, are the ones you don’t need to worry about pleasing. Just as you are being true to yourself, so are they. And in such a la reveal magnifico of their true selves you have an advantage to instead focus your time and energy on those who will treat you right. Authenticity is as important as sizzling. Sizzling is authenticity.
But not everyone will treat you right. Some coaches will be cruel. Some will be hard on you. Realize there is a sweet spot where many of their intentions are only to help you be the best version of yourself there is. Love those coaches because whatever harsh words they use, these words are proof that they love you too. But some people, you will never be able to please. When you realize that about someone, just be the best version of yourself. Take what lessons or advantages they have to offer with appreciation, but do not go out of your way to win over acknowledgment that will never come.
These words are applicable when acquaintances ask to become your friend after you break the country’s high school single game sack record. Remember these lessons when you are scouted to play local college ball. Remember these lessons when you are drafted in the first round of the DSFL. The ones who are closest to you, who love you for who you are, who love that you sizzle, those are the people who matter.
You’re 13. Soon you’ll begin training for high school football. You’ll meet amazing teammates who will become life long friends. The ones who love your sizzle will sizzle with you. You’ll even travel to Antarctica to sizzle with scientists and explorers. Your sizzle will change lives.
But always remember who loved your sizzle first, your brother, Orpheus. It was during those games of stick ball that Orpheus commented how your skin tinged the nerf ball from the contact against the heat of your skin. But such comments were made with wonder and love, not judgement. It was Orpheus who always was willing to make up new games with you, never afraid of contact. Even when those games were as physical and silly as Kung Fu Basketball. Orpheus has always let you be your true authentic self. Open yourself up to helping others be authentic around you.
So 13 year old Morpheus, I know you’re currently uncomfortable with how you sizzle. I know you’re worried that it’s going to make life harder for you. I confess, there will be obstacles. But your ability to sizzle is what will help you overcome the truly difficult obstacles. And the people who truly love you will make life all the better. Hold on to those people. Hold on to your brother. Be there for others.
You will always sizzle and that is what makes you great.
