Defensive Line Standouts - Week 12
Welcome to week 12 of our weekly look at defensive line performances across the league. While the difference hasn’t been showing in the win/loss columns, the SaberCats have undergone a bit of a renaissance recently. After losing 2 close games to the Yeti and Outlaws at home, things are beginning to look up for the SaberCats, thanks in no small part to their defensive line. Will their dominating performance continue this week? Only time will tell! Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
J. Tuck ($ x9) 7 TCK, 4 TFL, 1 SCK
Although the Outlaws struggled in a game many expected them to win easily, they managed to pull through, thanks in no small part to Tuck’s play. After taking a down week, Tuck is back on top with a 7 tackle, 4 tackles for loss, and 1 sack performance. Although the Outlaws have clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs, the have a big test coming up against the Wraiths, a game many expected to be an early showing of the Ultimus Bowl.
C. Okonkwo ($ x5) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 2 SCK
Okonkwo kept his hot streak going this week, now making the list for an impressive 4 out of the last 5 weeks. His 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 sacks is even more impressive considering he was playing against a very good Arizona Outlaws offensive line. Okonkwo is on the road next week to Las Vegas, where he faces a struggling Legion offensive line.
F. Wozy ($ x8) 3 TCK, 2 SCK
Wozy is making his eighth appearance on our list after his 3 tackle, 2 sack performance. Their loss to the Legion this past week was a heartbreaker as they now must win the remainder of their games and received a little outside help in order to qualify for the playoffs. The Yetis host The Philadelphia Liberty at home this week, and the Baltimore Hawks the following week.
Other Great Performers
K. Hendrix ($ x8) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
O. Taylor ($$$$) 5 TCK, 2 TFL
O. Von Gerhardt ($$$$) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
After a bit of a cold-streak, Hendrix is reappearing on our list with his 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 1 sack performance. He’s joined by teammate Taylor who didn’t get to the quarterback but added 5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. Von Gerhardt is making his first appearance since week 7.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
V. Cox ($ x10) 5 TCK, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovered
Cox is making his tenth appearance on our list, the second most of any player in the NSFL, behind teammate Ramrio. While he was unable to make any plays in the backfield, his 5 tackles and both a fumble forced and fumble recovered was more than enough to put him at the top of our list. The Legion are headed to San Jose this next week for a battle of 2 very hot defensive lines.
L. Chunk ($$$$) 9 TCK, 2 TFL
Chunk is making his fourth appearance here with 9 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. His 9 tackles this week were the most of any defensive lineman. The recent great play of Chunk has really helped to open up some opportunities for early season standout D. Miller. Together, they combine for a very formidable interior defensive line.
D. Miller ($$$$) 8 TCK, 1 SCK
Miller, who was playing very well at the beginning of the year, has had a bit of a resurgence with the emergence of waiver wire pickup, Chunk. His 8 tackles were the second most of and defensive lineman this week, behind only his teammate.
Other Great Performers
M. Ramrio ($ x11) 5 TCK, 1 SCK
A. Asipi ($ x6) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
J. Boom ($ x6) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
G. Taylor ($ x5) 8 TCK
Ramrio, Asipi, and Boom were all able to add 1 sack to their statistics column, and although Taylor wasn’t able to follow suit, I just couldn’t leave off an 8 tackle performance. He was the definition of a plug in the middle of the field.
Team Appearances After Week 12
Las Vegas: 27
Arizona: 23*
Baltimore: 22
Colorado: 18
San Jose: 16
Orange County: 15***
Yellowknife: 14***
Philadelphia: 11*
Las Vegas maintains their 4 spot lead and Arizona holds onto second, but their lead has been cut down to only one. San Jose continued their hot streak and thanks in part to a no-show on our list from both Orange County and Yellowknife, they jumped from seventh to fifth. Considering they were dead last just 3 weeks ago, the improvement has been shocking. All teams marked with an asterisk have had their bye week. As always, please feel free to share your thoughts and comments below!
