After suffering a devastating defeat at the hands of the Colorado Yeti, tension in the Philadelphia Liberty locker room appears to be on the rise once again, and the unpredictable rookie nickelback, Cedric Wilkins II, continues to find himself at the center of the conflict. Wilkins, who made the most of his limited opportunities to impact the game, wrangling Colorado quarterback Mattathias Caliban in the end zone for his first career safety, left the field following the lopsided loss fuming, and was reported to have chucked his helmet across the locker room in frustration. Fortunately, the organization reports no injuries, noting that Wilkins was first to hit the showers postgame and thus had no opportunity to harm a teammate, but his actions have raised concerns among teammates and the front office alike.
Lip Chap, the Liberty general manager, held a press conference, allegedly to address the Wilkins situation, but gathered reporters indicate he simply sat in silence for fifteen minutes, staring blankly past the crowd as they attempted to forward their inquiries. Chap then left the room, not once having opened his mouth except to lick his lips the entire time.
Xavier Walls, the team’s defensive captain, who at one point was quite critical of the rookie’s activity, appears to have softened in his critiques, indicating that he has far greater concerns than Wilkins, especially considering that the rookie has been pulling his weight on the field. Per Walls, his current focus is on his own play, and until Wilkins is interested in talking, Walls appears to have no interest in pressing the issue.
Wilkins, once again, could not be reached for comment, as he appears to have left for London shortly after the loss to Colorado, allegedly in the company of the same mystery woman whom he has been seen with regularly since he arrived early to Sarasota. However, we extended an invitation for comment to Wilkins’ mother, who agreed to speak with us. Mrs. Wilkins spoke warmly of her son, “Cedric is completely dedicated to everything he does, never gives less than his all”. She additionally noted, “I know my son has been going through a lot as he adapts to the professional game and new personal circumstances, but I really don’t think his love for the sport he shared with his father has dwindled even for a moment”.
With the knowledge that Wilkins had left for Europe already, we attempted to contact the Fire Salamanders for comment; they denied that Wilkins had arrived early in Berlin and noted no prior contact with the cornerback.
