When it comes to blown calls having a huge impact on the game, nothing in my experience in either the DSFL or ISFL compares to the blown phantom penalty called against the Tijuana Luchadores in a playoff game against the Dallas Birddogs in the S27 playoffs. With just 46 seconds left in the game, the Luchadores held a 6 point lead. The Birddogs were driving down the field though, and found themselves at 4th and 10 on the Luchadores 20 yard line. They completed a pass for 6 yards, but instead of the game log reading it as a turnover on downs, the play by play simply read “automatic first down” at the end. There was no penalty or player displayed that would have resulted in a first down. With a fresh set of downs, the Birddogs would immediately throw a 14 yard touchdown pass on the very next play, taking a one point lead with just 6 seconds left to play and securing a spot in the Ultimini.
