The off season is generally a time that I write a bunch of media to help put me over the top for the next season. This offseason took place during Christmas time so I unfortunately missed out on being able to write much. With that said, I decided to write a reflection today on becoming the new co general manager of the Norfolk SeaWolves and spread some personal information and positivity and thanks in this new year to those who have really helped me get to this point.
Becoming the general manager of a team was something that interested me from the day I found out there were such positions in this league. I was a late sign up (mere days before the draft back in April/May) and as a result I was selected in the like 4th round. I was only scouted by 2 teams, one of which was Norfolk. My conversation with Isa at that time was not a very long one, but at that time he explained to me his temporary role in Norfolk. After our conversation concluded and then seeing I was drafted there, I knew I was going to be going to a special place in DSFL Land.
One thing that delayed me creating my player was that my step mom got sick on my brother’s birthday (the first birthday of his since he passed away in 2020). The odds of her illness hitting her so hard on his birthday were slim and caught us all of guard. This ultimately ended with her passing away on April 27th, which also happened to be the 6th anniversary of my father in law passing away. Weird coincidences, but I bring these up because I wanted to send a thank you to everyone involved in this league. Whether I have ever had a conversation with you, or maybe you have a league job that keeps things going, or are just a user. I joined shortly after her passing and this league provided a much needed distraction to the things that I had going on in real life.
As time has progressed, I have met tons of great people from all over the world and of vastly different age groups who all are here for their own reasons, but ultimately to have some fun. I love the ISFL because not only has it been something fun to join, but I think it serves a bigger purpose in many folks lives even if we do not necessarily realize it while we are playing. Some people may get most of their person to person interactions from here, while others look at it as a challenge where they want results and to make the best sim player possible. I am not involved in other sim leagues and am sure this fits with them all. But to me, the beautiful thing is that no matter why someone is playing, or what they have going on in real life, the ISFL community is there to help people move forward, maybe achieve some personal sim goals, but ultimately have a positive outlet that they may not have at that time. I know at least for me it was here when I needed a distraction and an injection of positivity in my life, so I thank you all for that! Each and everyone of you. Yes you reading (We get paid by words haha). On top of all of this, I see there is now a charity drive as well which is an amazing thing. I am always so impressed by this league and continue to always be pleasantly surprised as I learn new things as the weeks go by. I am writing this at a slow time at work so apologize if some of that seems jumbled as I have taken a few different calls since I began writing.
Moving away from the really personal side of things, I was so excited when in November I saw the opening for the co general manager position in Norfolk. I was nervous as heck but decided to apply after encouragement from my buddy Ice Bear and the rest of our war room in Honolulu. I hoped to be a little creative in making my self stand out, so our locker room came up with a bunch of funny personalized hashtags meant to encourage my candidacy for the Norfolk Job. I am sure we had a bunch of great candidates for the job, and am honored to have been chosen to help lead Norfolk moving forward. Negs and the rest of the group in Norfolk have been amazing in bringing me along and have been patient as I continue to get my legs under me as a general manager for this league.
Moving forward, I hope to help continue the success that Norfolk has been having and doing my best to help provide a good initial experience for all the new and existing users that come into our locker room.
I want to extend a special thank you to: Ice Bear, Fronk, Sid, Flex, 82, Negs and Isa for their different roles in getting me into this league and helping me get to where we are today. It has been such a great and fun ride, and I am excited to see how things develop into the future. Have a great day!
