Sabercats Develop New Hobby
After a slightly disappointing season for the Sabercats, players and management needed a way to get their mind off of reality. Their outlet of choice was madden 17, a football game based of the National Simulation Football League. All the players from each team are incorporated into the game and are given attributes based on how they perform in game(such as speed, agility, strength, etc.). The Sabercats have three Playstation's set up in the locker room in order to get games played quickly and efficiently. Usually, tournaments of 16 are set up with a little bit of money thrown in by everyone. Each player gets to choose a team(the Sabercats are almost always represented) and have to stick with that team throughout the tournament. However, the game isn't perfect so some rules have been established:
1. If a player chooses to use the Arizona Outlaws, that player must allow the opposing team to have a seven point lead to start the game.
2. Players may not run any play more than twice a drive.
3. The play "Corner Strikes" is permanently banned.
Each player has their own technique and style with each team they use; Jordan Yates, offensive lineman, always uses the Las Vegas Legion.
We asked him why he uses one of the worst teams in the NSFL. He answered "Stormblessed. His speed is unstoppable. It may not be so effective in real life, but that 98 speed will blow by any cornerback in Madden. You can put double, triple, even quadruple coverage on him and he'll still blow by them all eventually. Only bad thing is that you have to throw with this random guy, I think he's the equipment manager. Joe Bercuci or something? I'm not really sure, but when he can occasionally get the ball to Stormblessed, it really pays off."
We asked another player, Denzel Diaz, about his choice to always use the Arizona Outlaws. "What can I say, I like to win. Even with the seven point deficit, it's easily overcame with the likes of King Bronko, Harrif Ernston and Reg Mackworthy. I'm winning the pot through whatever means necessary."
The Sabercats last tournament was extremely dramatic. The final four were defensive lineman Dan Miller, cornerback John Canton, wide receiver Darren Smallwood and star safety Zed Richter. Richter, a player not known for speaking much, had managed to plow through the tournament until he met Smallwood. In the battle between offense and defense, Smallwood barely edged out the victory using the Wraiths by catching a touchdown pass with himself(roster updates have been known to be notoriously slow). Dan Miller, using the Sabercats, won on a pick six by John Canton against John Canton in ironic fashion. Miller and Smallwood then began the battle for the title of Madden Champion along with the $160 pot. Smallwood jumped out to a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter, but Miller wasn't ready to giveup. He scored on a long touchdown to Bailey Cook(a roster update would've dramatically changed the game), recovered an onside kick and made a field goal as the first half expired to even up the game at 10-10. To begin the second half, Smallwood demonstrated with ferocious efficiency the power of Bubba Nuck as ran his way down the field using the hurry up offense, eventually breaking off a 21 yard score to take the lead. Unfortunately, he missed the extra point, something that would comeback to bite him. The battle was mostly defensive after that point, at least until the two minute warning in the fourth quarter. Faced with a fourth and 12 at the 21 yard line, Miller elected to kick a field goal, putting the Sabercats down 13-16 with less than two minutes remaining. The Cats attempted an onside kick but the Wraiths recovered. Using Bubba Nuck once again, the Wraiths managed to get a first down whilst eliminating all three of the Sabercats timeouts. The situation looked bad for the Sabercats: all the Wraiths had to do was take a knee to win the game. However, in a disastrous miscommunication between quarterback and center, Chris Orosz fumbled the snap which was landed on by Dan Miller! At the 50 yard line, the Sabercats didn't have much of a chance to score in one play but it was at least worth a try. With three seconds remaining, Ethan Hunt scanned the field, looking for a receiver. No one seemed to be available, so he tossed a hail mary as far as possible into the end zone right before being sacked. As the ball came down, it was caught by none other than Wizard Stephen, one of the Sabercats backup receivers. How Wizard made it onto the field was unknown, but one thing was known: Wizard had made a magical play that won the Sabercats the game.
