A lot of changes have been happening in San Jose as of late. The trade of Bailey Cook, the trade of AC Hackett, the nine game losing streak, the hiring of Lord Nibbler as the Co-GM and many changes in the locker room. To go along with this, San Jose’s past week was actually the team’s bye week. A lot of changes have been going on, and it is good for the guys to finally get an off-week to decompress and take in everything that has happened throughout the past few weeks and actually the entire season. Going 4-0 in Preseason, and then 3-1 to start the season to go on a nine game losing streak can take its toll on anybody. So the locker room leaders of the team decided to take a poll and would do some team building activities during this bye week. These are the small things that are happening in San Jose that will help bring them together throughout the adversity and the changes that are going on.
Monday was one of most interesting days that could have happened on this lovely voyage that the team was going on. Darren Smallwood came up with the idea of taking the team bus and being “heroes” for the day. So the team piled onto the bus and decided to ride around the city of San Jose. About halfway through the day, Darren noticed smoke coming up from a building a couple blocks away. He tells the driver to head that way and for the team to get ready. The street was already blocked off by cops because of the building fire so the Sabercats had the bus parked and decided to run to the fire. As the team gathered outside of the building, Darren looked around and stated “This is it guys. It’s time to show who wants to be a hero, and who doesn’t. I don’t blame you guys if you do not feel up to the task, but team building time!” Darren sprinted into the building and most of the other players just looked back and forth and stared at each other. Vincent Sharpei said fuck it and ran in after Smallwood, followed by Dan Miller and John Canton. The rest of the team looked on in disbelief and had no idea what to do. Minutes passed, which seemed like hours and out came Darren, Vincent, Dan and John. Each member of the Sabercats were carrying either a child or a pet. Darren had a small kid, probably no older than 6, Vince had a dog in his arms, Dan was carrying three cats, and John came out with a lady in his arms. News Reporters were at the scene, and pulled Darren to the side and asked him what drove him to do such a daring and idiotic thing. Darren’s only response was one for the ages. “Gotta work on that Cardio, Man.” The Sabercats went back to the bus and headed to the stadium. What an interesting Monday, and this is only the start of the bye week.
Tuesday rolled around, and rookie Denzel Diaz came up with a great way to build up the team’s morale and confidence. He had talked to the team and had us all meet up at the stadium at 7pm. It was not unusual for the team to do things at night time, especially with it being bye week. Denzel had everybody come into the stadium and take us down to the locker room. At each one of our lockers, he had arranged for a hooker to be sitting there, almost completely naked, willing and waiting for each one of us. In the middle of the locker room, on a table he had set up, it was just like in the movie Scarface, a mountain of cocaine! Any edge that any of the team was feeling would easily and quickly be cleared by the lovely evening that Denzel had set up for us. There’s only two things you are going to do when you have a mountain of cocaine and hookers lined up for all the players and long into the night these things occurred throughout the San Jose Stadium. Denzel Diaz bought and took care of each and every one of his teammates in one of the only ways he knew how and boy oh boy did Denzel deliver. Vincent believed that Denzel’s team night was going to be one of the hardest things to top, especially with five more days that were supposed to be team related.
Wednesday came this day was Jordan Yates’ time to shine. It’s very hard to follow hookers and coke but it was Jordan’s word that his day would be close to on par with what Denzel had given the night before. The team met up at the Stadium at around 3:00 P.M., to get this afternoon started. Jordan walked us all to the locker room and had three play stations set up. We ended up playing Madden 17 with the NSFL settings and it turned into a huge team tournament. The finals came down to Dan Miller vs Darren Smallwood, with Miller coming out on top. He won the pot of $160 and ended up taking the whole team out to eat afterwards at his favorite sushi restaurant in San Jose. It was a wonderful gesture for Miller to take everybody out like that, but sushi is not one of those things that everybody enjoys. All in all, Wednesday did not meet up to the expectations that everybody had of Tuesday night, but it was a great bonding experience that yet again, through the controversy, is bringing everybody closer together.
Thursday was Vincent Sharpei’s day to shine, and in his eyes he shone bright. Vincent had everybody meet up at the stadium at 7:00 A.M (Ugh! I know right? Fuck mornings!!!) And board on the team bus. Vince isn’t a guy for surprises, so once everybody got on, he informed the team of his plan for this day. Vincent rented out a paintball area and wanted to set up an offense vs defense kind of day. It’s team building at its finest, through the whole team and both sides of the ball. It was a long hot day for the team in paintballing, but god was it worth it. The San Jose Sabercats mostly played capture the Flag, and throughout the day the teams were even, going back and forth with offense winning a match then defense winning. The standout of the day though had to have been Christian Adams, who on the last game of the day single-handedly carried the offense to the win. They were down, but not out, Adams was able to sneak around and get behind the defense as the rest of his teammates laid supporting fire. Adams then was able to grab the flag and book it out of there, with the offense taking the win, and ending the day with the victory over the defense, it was a long fought hard day, but well worth it. Everybody had boarded the bus, and John Canton announced that for Friday, they will be taking a trip out of San Jose to San Francisco (Which is only an hour drive away) and for everybody to get their rest.
Friday morning is here, and the team loads up onto the bus getting ready for their trip out to San Francisco. Nobody really knows what to expect, as who goes to San Francisco when you have beautiful San Jose to stay in? It’s no big deal, since a lot of the guys in the locker room have trust and faith that John has something amazing planned. As we arrive at the docks in San Francisco, Carrie Underwood approaches the team! It was crazy to see such a star right before our eyes, but she walks right up to John and grabs him and they embrace. It was disgusting to say the least, but anyways, John promised a fun filled Friday and it looks like he is going to deliver. Ms. Underwood takes us onto this huge party Yacht and as we board, we notice there are a lot of big named stars already here and relaxing. We haven’t even left the dock yet, and music is blasting, drinks are being passed around, more and more people are showing up and it is just a wonderful time. John, with Carrie introduced Vincent to Ariana Grande (Which has to have been the best thing in my life, I even got her number). P Diddy was there, Snoop Dogg, Johnny Depp, Tiger Woods, Steven Spielberg, and many more. Carrie even preformed free of charge and there was a lot of support for the Sabercats on this boat. Friday had to have been one of the best days of a lot of the players week, since they got to meet their idols and got to relax with them for a whole day.
Saturday was back to the field sort of day, where the team all gathered at the practice field and started to go through drills again. It wasn’t as exciting or anything like that compared to the rest of the week, but you could tell that the team was in higher spirits again and were able to bring their A+ game to practice. With only a little bit left to go in the regular season, the Sabercats are doing everything they can to keep this core together and continue to push through to get ready for the next season. A lot of people are counting them out for the third season, but they have a few tricks up their sleeve, especially with the way the team is looking now and to the future. San Jose is going to be a force to be reckoned with, and it all starts with the work the guys are willing to put together and build with each other in these upcoming weeks of adversary. Time will only tell if the team will come out better through all of the struggles, or if they will fall apart, but a lot of people are betting on better.
