After two incredibly memorable seasons with the Dallas Birddogs and nine seasons with his dear pals in Orange County, cornerback Richard Leaking has decided to hang up his cleats.
This is the part of the retirement post where people usually list their career accolades, but Richard wasn’t always the best in that regard, so alas we don’t have too many accolades to list here. He was nominated for defensive rookie of the year and linebacker of the year in his first DSFL season, and it was just a touch downhill from there for a bit, at least until this past season. Although there have been times where I’ve been somewhat disappointed with Leaking’s performance on the field when compared to some of his future hall of fame peers (damn you, Rich Triplet and Harrison Andrews!) his career was anything but a disappointment to me. Through Leaking, I was lucky enough to meet people I consider genuine friends today, some of whom I speak to just about every day. Let’s take a second to appreciate this league’s innate ability to bring people together - I might’ve come for the dot football, but it’s not what I stayed for.
What has kept me here has been the community; the fellow rookies I met way back in S25, the GMs that scouted and drafted me, the fellow war room members in Dallas and OCO that I’ve gotten to know and bond with for over a year while spending countless hours debating who to draft or what we can do to improve our team, the other players I’ve gotten to meet and scout and draft. One of the coolest things I ever experienced in this league was scouting and drafting someone who would eventually go on to become the GM of the team, and I was lucky enough to see it happen four separate times just during Leaking’s career! MAYBE THE REAL ULTIMUS WAS THE FRIENDS WE MADE ALONG THE WAY.
Here’s the accolades part of the post that I said I wasn’t gonna do earlier. Ol’ Dick will still play out one final season with the Otters next season, so hopefully we’ll see him move up a spot or two in some of these rankings.
Leaking’s place in Orange County Otters franchise standings:
#1 in defensive TDs (6), t#13 in league history
#4 in INTs (22)
#5 in PDs (112)
#5 in forced fumbles (11)
#11 in tackles (634)
Enormous thanks to all of my GMs, teammates, war room members, management chat, and every other member of this league for making my first player’s career so much fun. All of my love to the Dallas Birddogs, the Orange County Otters, and you for reading this.
