It's been a while since I have done one of these, but here we are. On the cusp of playoffs. One more sim on Friday, and we will know the six teams that are going to compete for this season's championship. And I am here to provide you with all the nerdy shit you want to know. Or not, I don't care. I am getting paid either way. But before getting on with this, let's remember how DDSPF21 breaks ties between teams. For two teams, it is H2H > Division record > Best Offence > Coinflip. For three teams, The criteria stay the same, except for H2H being tossed out of the window, so we are left with Division record > Best Offence > Coinflip. Why do we need to know these? Because we are in for a wild ride. Especially in the always clusterfucked ASFC. But let's get the easy thing out of the way, starting with the NSFC, whose standings are as follows:
1. Chicago (11-3-1) (2-0 vs BER)
--------------------------
2. Berlin (10-4-1) (0-1-1 vs SAR, 0-2 vs CHI)
3. Sarasota (9-5-1) (1-0-1 vs BER)
--------------------------
4. Philly (6-8-1)
5. Yellowknife (6-9)
6. Baltimore (6-9)
7. Colorado (2-13)
And here we go. The clusterfuck called the ASFC. It always has to be the ASFC. Always. Let's have a look at the current standings first:
1. Honolulu (10-5) (2-0 vs AZ)
--------------------------
2. Arizona (9-5-1) (0-2 vs HON)
3. San Jose (7-7-1) (2-0 vs NOLA, 1-1 vs AUS, 5-6 vs ASFC)
--------------------------
4. Austin (7-8) (0-1 vs NO, 2-0 vs NY, 1-1 vs SJS, 6-5 vs ASFC)
5. New Orleans (7-8) (1-0 vs AUS, 1-1 vs NY, 0-2 vs SJS, 5-6 vs ASFC)
6. New York (7-8) (0-2 vs AUS, 1-1 vs NO, 4-7 vs ASFC)
7. Orange County (5-10)
Now, let's have a look at the implications of each game, in order of streaming on Friday
Yellowknife @ Honolulu
Orange County @ Arizona
I have these two games grouped, as, while YKW and OCO have nothing but pride to play for, HON and AZ are playing for the #1 seed in the ASFC. All Honolulu need is a tie. If they get it, Arizona has nothing to play for against Orange County. If Yellowknife cause the upset, an Outlaws' win has them first and the Hahalua will have to host one of SJS, Austin, NOLA, and New York.
New York @ San Jose
New Orleans @ Austin
Again I grouped these two games together as they influence each other, and the first game's result will change what the second game is about. But enough talking, let's start talking scenarios. The only outcome in NY @ SJS that makes the NOLA @ AUS game a game of pride and draft place is SJS winning and getting out of reach, with a 8-7-1 record. If SJS doesn't win, it gets crazy, and the 3rd seed in the ASFC relies on the result of the NOLA @ AUS game:
-NY win, NOLA @ AUS has a winner: NOLA @ AUS winner makes playoffs
-NY win, NOLA @ AUS ends in a tie: NY make playoffs
- NY @ SJS ends in a tie, Austin wins: Austin (8-8) and SJS (7-7-2) tie for 3rd, with Austin making playoffs by virtue of a better divisional record
- NY @ SJS ends in a tie, NOLA wins: NOLA (8-8) and SJS (7-7-2) tie for 3rd, with SJS making playoffs by virtue of head-to-head record (2-0) vs NOLA
- Both games end in a tie: SJS makes playoffs outright
Colorado @ Sarasota
Berlin @ Baltimore
Another pairing of games, this time for #2 and #3 in NSFC. Berlin has a one game lead over Sarasota, but Sarasota owns the H2H (1-0-1). What does that tell us? Berlin needs a tie to be the host of the NSFC Wildcard, no matter what happens in the prior game between Colorado and Sarasota. However, a Sarasota win and a Berlin loss, gives the Sailfish the right to host the Fire Salamanders in the NSFC Wildcard game. Colorado has nothing to play for, as they are the owners of the #1 pick in the S35 draft, while a loss for the Hawks may push them up a pick or so in the draft order.
Philly @ Chicago
This is a game where nothing is at play really. The only thing Philly can hope for is losing, while Baltimore and Yellowknife both win, so they gain two spots in the draft order, moving all the way to 3rd overall, but that's it for the Liberty. On the other hand, Chicago has NOTHING to play for. They have a one game lead AND own the Head-to-Head against Berlin (2-0), meaning they are #1 in the NSFC no matter what.
If you didn't know, now you do. We are in for a crazy finish in the ASFC for that coveted 3rd seed. See ya in the next one for DSFL, coming post sim tomorrow.
