It's no secret that Raeni Clarke has a great agent @bex, whose skills in negotiating team changes and contract terms are legendary. In signing with the Sarasota Sailfish for the S34 season, Clarke was offered a little sweetener by the Sailfish GMs -- a haiku for every interception recorded on the season. No one can know for certain, but it seems like Clarke was very motivated by this sweetener and she recorded six interceptions on the season to stay at the top of the league! Clarke would end the regular season as a frontrunner in the Cornerback of the Year race with impressive stats across the board, but this literary homage is just for those fantastic interceptions.
It's an away game, Week 1 and the Sailfish face off against their in-conference rivals, the Colorado Yeti. It's Clarke's debut as a fish, but she is unfazed. At the start of the second quarter, the Yeti drive the length of the field and are in the red zone. Live Laughlove airs in out to Raphael Delacour in the endzone, but Clarke is there for the endzone interception to save the score. Fish win 49-21.
Clarke starts for Sailfish
Yeti nearing the endzone
Clutch interception
It is Week 4 and the Sailfish face the Berlin Salamanders at home. It is nearing the end of the first quarter and the teams have already traded two scores each! Berlin is backed up on their own 27-yard line. A bit desperate with 2nd and 16, quarterback Christ Jr. attempts a pass to running back Goat Tank. Clarke is there to foil the attempt and the Sailfish are able to punch it into the endzone for the lead on the next play. Fish win 41-33.
Racking up the stats
Tormentor of quarterbacks
A Raen of terror
Week 7 away in Chicago as the Sarasota Sailfish test their strength against an NSFC powerhouse. It's the second quarter and the Sailfish defense have the Butchers backed up on their own 25 yard line. It's 2nd and 19 and Oles Jr. throws a prayer to Vincent Sharpei Jr. But Clarke is there, not only to make the interception, but to return the ball all the way to the end zone. 31 yards and six points keeps Sarasota in the game. Amazing play, but this time, it sadly just wasn't quite enough and the fish fall 48-38 to the Butchers' cleavers.
The contested catch:
Is it really a contest
When Clarke’s covering?
Time for the fishbowl! Week 8 and the Sailfish travel to Honolulu to face off against their expansion franchise rivals the Hahalua. Despite home field advantage, Dexter Zaylren struggles against the Sarasota defense early. First drive and Sailfish Safety Spike Daniels intercepts a pass to Eleven Kendrick-Watts. Next Honolulu drive and Raeni Clarke gets her turn, again picking off a Zaylren to Kendrick-Watts connection. The better fish win 42-23.
Which fish will be food?
Tonight, Raeni was hungry
Rays are on the plate
One more week, one more interception for Clarke. It's Week 9 and the Sailfish host the Arizona Outlaws. The Sailfish have only a five point lead and punt it away win a little over a minute left to play. Arizona starts their drive to try for the come-from-behind win. Wendell Sailor throws to his favorite target, Kotoni Staggs, but Clarke is there to snatch it from the air and secure the victory. Offense kneels it out and fish win 35-30.
Fish up by one score
Outlaws to mount one last drive
Better luck next time
Week 14 and the Sailfish are away to Berlin to face the Fire Salamanders as the teams vie for playoff seeding in the NSFC. Clarke already has five interceptions on the season but is hungry for more; she wants another score. It's the fourth quarter in a tight game. Berlin's quarterback Christ Jr. targets Troy Abed for a second down chunk play, but Clarke is there in a flash to take the pass and return it 57 yards for the touchdown! Fish tie 24-24.
Close match in Berlin
But no joy for Joliet
As Clarke snags the pass
Whether in Sarasota or elsewhere, we can't wait to see what Clarke will do next!
Bex, we loved having you on the team and hope you enjoy these haikus!
