Well, well! Who wants another portion of S37 draft analysis, huh? In all seriousness, I've always wanted to provide a sort of draft analysis for an ISFL draft and what better way to do it during the S37 draft! This analysis will feature only the first round as I didn't want this analysis to drag on too long! With that being said, let's get it!
With the dubious honor of having the first overall pick, the Berlin Fire Salamanders are in desperate need of elite talent at any position to help propel the rebuild. By tpe, they are the lowest total tpe team and are among the lower end of average tpe per player. With that being said and in mind, the Salamanders selected Charlie Thorsen, aka Amidships, LB from Tijuana with their pick. Thorsen is absolutely the consensus pick here as he has the case of being the most outstanding and productive player in the S37 class. In his lone season with Tijuana, Thorsen produced a godly statline: 98 tackles, 13 for loss, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 10 pass deflections, and 10 sacks, an essential "quadruple double" if you will! With his elite production and potential to improve greatly, Thorsen is highly likely to start day 1 on the Salamanders defense as they were far away the worst defense on all fronts: by effective tpe, and by on field production. If all goes well and Thorsen continues to improve, not only will he be likely the favorite for DROTY, but he will also be a perennial DPOY candidate till his retirement! An S tier pick for the Salamanders!
With the second overall pick, the New York Silverbacks aren't as dire in a situation as the Salamanders are but they too are in desperate need of elite talent to help bolster their talent pool as they are the 2nd lowest team by total tpe and among the lower end as well for average tpe per player. With that being said and in mind as well, the Silverbacks selected, Matthew Mara, aka High Stick King, WR from Dallas with the second overall pick. I love the pick here for several reasons! The first reason is is that I have had the honor of playing with HSK in the WSBL and he was a great locker room presence and he was always an elite earner back to our days on Detroit! The other main reason I love this pick is that Mara, like Thorsen, arguably had the most productive season by anyone in the S37 class. For his season with Dallas, Mara also had a godly statline: 84 receptions, 1306 receiving yards, 9 receiving TDs, with a 15.5 yards per reception. The most outstanding that is that he accumulated 37 first downs and almost half his catches resulted in first downs for Dallas. This is great news for New York as their offense last season sorely needed a number 1 threat that was capable of stretching the field to help Savage not only have a bounceback season but to also have a piece for the future. I grade this pick as an S tier pick as well for the Silverbacks!
With the third overall pick, the Colorado Yeti aren't as dire in a situation as the other two teams above them are but they are needing a bit of a talent infusion as well since they finished with the third overall pick in this draft. However, to be completely honest, I am not a fan of the selection here, not because of the player but because of the side of the ball that I believe that they were definitely more needing of talent for. With the the selection, the Yeti selected Grayson Hayes, aka Arctic, QB from Bondi Beach. I want to stress this clearly; I believe that Hayes is definitely a first round level selection based on his season on BB. Although the completion percentage is a bit lower, Hayes is an extremely efficient QB posting a TD to Int ratio of 16/6 which is the highest from all the QBs in the DSFL this past season. Not only that, Hayes is a very proficient runner as he averaged 5.4 yards per carry and gathered 8 TDs on the ground. So what that being said, the reason I am not a fan of the selection is two-fold. As an outsider, the Yeti's current QB, Live Laughlove, is a great QB and has been steady and efficient with his time in the Yeti. In addition, the Yeti's defense was absolutely horrendous as it practically gave up 500 points and was only surpassed in "worseness" by Berlin. I believe they should have gone with one of the higher rated defenders still left on the board here to quickly bolster their defense as they have offensive talent to be able to be competitive. That being said, FA and trades are always a thing and it could be not as it seems at Colorado so I understand the need for insurance if LL left. So all things considered, I will grade this pick an A since the player they picked is very good and has high potential but the timing is not ideal given their potential window.
With the fourth overall pick, the Austin Copperheads aren't as dire in a situation as the other teams above them are but they are needing a bit of a talent infusion as well since they finished with the fourth overall pick in this draft. However, to be completely honest, unlike the Yeti's selection above, I like the pick here given the Copperheads situation. With the the selection, the Copperheads selected Delores Bickerman, aka Kyamprac, QB from Tijuana. Man as a side note, Tijuana has now had two picks in the top 5 which is a testament to the FO of that team. With that being said, as I stated before, I love the pick here for three reasons. The first reason is that during my time with my first player in the ISFL, Kyamprac was one of the first people to help me out and show the league to me and help convince me to stay and have fun in this league which I definitely credit her for! The second reason is that, she is one of the hardest earning people in this league and that is evidenced with her recreate; Bickerman is not only a gunslinger, but she is an efficient one! She amassed 3180 yards on 63.6% and also had a great 35 TD to 13 Int ratio, something that I know she will definitely improve upon during her time in the league. That coincides with the third reason: this is essentially the Trey Lance and Jimmy Garapollo situation that we are seeing in the NFL currently and I definitely understand why the Copperheads are making this move. All in all, I give this pick an S tier grade for the all the reasons stated!
With the fifth overall pick, the Baltimore Hawks aren't as dire in a situation as the other teams above them are but they are needing a bit of a talent infusion as well since they finished with the fifth overall pick in this draft, a high pick like teams before them. Like the Copperheads pick, I like the pick here given the Hawks situation. With the the selection, the Hawks selected Preston Beatz, aka DarknessRising, QB from Minnesota. With that being said, as I stated before, I love the pick here for three reasons. The first reason is that during my time with my first player in the ISFL, Darkness was one of the first people, like Kyamprac, to help me out and show the league to me and help convince me to stay and have fun in this league which I definitely credit him for! (It does suck that he had to defeat my team back with my first player back in S27 in the Ultimus). The second reason that I love this pick is that as one of the leaders in the WSBL, he is definitely a hard worker and elite earner who will quickly earn to max potential in no time, helping the rebuild of the Hawks as he earns quickly. (He probably has great stats with the Grey Ducks, but the draft and the index are bonked so I am assuming he had great stats for the season.) Like the Copperheads, this also seems like a Trey Lance and Jimmy Garapollo situation. So with that being said, I am going to give this pick an S tier grade.
With the sixth overall pick, the New Orleans Second Line, my team, had an interesting decision here to make. We were very close to making the playoffs this season, yet fell apart due to sim junk and just general unluckiness. As a result, the team decided that we should go with best player available. With our pick we selected Jason Oexius, aka Moldycheez4, CB from Bondi Beach. Even removing bias from the equation, I love the pick here. A few times during the season, NOLA gave up random long touchdowns for no reason; I believe that Jason will help shore up the secondary and mitigate that for next season, helping us get a couple more wins to hopefully make the playoffs next season. With regards to Jason himself, he elite as a corner; he amassed 71 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 3 interceptions, and had a whopping 22 pass deflections. He will definitely help bolster our CB depth and make sure that we do not have a fall off when we rotate our defensive players throughout the game! In addition, he has been a blast in the locker room so far and I hope that he can help us achieve our goals of winning a championship! With that being said, I give this pick an S tier grade.
Now the rest of the first round will be sort of a "rapid-fire" analysis for each of the picks since many of the picks here are by the same teams since they traded for these picks.
For the seventh overall pick, the Silverbacks selected Bay Webb, aka TheHammer43, DE from Dallas. The first DLineman off the board, I like the pick overall since it helps shore up their DLine and provide a bit of depth to their young front seven that they are looking to help build around for the future. Webb will definitely have his work cut for him to earn the top spot as the Silverbacks have plenty of young DL to rotate between. If he can continue to keep earning and build upon his 32 tackle, 4 TFL, 5 FF, 2 FR, and 9 sack season, he can be a force to help return the Silverbacks to glory. With that being said, I give this pick an S tier grade.
For the eighth overall pick, the Yeti finally addressed their need of any form of defensive help in the draft. This time I am more favorable towards the pick as they selected Inspector Gadget, CB from Portland. Gadget is definitely a top 5 talent as their stats were as follows: 44 tackles, 1 sack, 6 interceptions, 15 pass deflections, and 2 defensive touchdowns. An elite cover prospect and game changer, Gadget will instantly slot into the Yeti's secondary and greatly improve it to help the Yeti be competitive again. I give this pick an SSS tier grade for the value and potential here at 8th overall.
For the ninth overall pick, we have Yellow Knife Wraiths, the first of the playoff teams selecting in this draft. The Wraiths are in a good position as a team and only look to keep getting better. As a result, what do you do when you're in the Wraith's position? You pick the best available player! In this case, the best available player left on the board is Dusty Wilson, OL of the Kansas City Coyotes! Dusty is definitely the best OL from the S37 class as he had over a dozen more pancakes than any other OLineman on the board and only allowed 7 sacks in over twice the plays than the next best commit. For a playoff team like the Wraiths, this is a steal and should to push them back into the contention tier that we have been accustomed to them being. With that said, I give the pick an SSS like the pick before due to value and how much of a draft steal this is.
For the tenth overall pick, Berlin further reinforces their defense with the selection of RDBSouthpaw, aka Jordan Hartline, LB from BBB. I love this pick for a couple of reasons as not only as he's a great locker room guy, but he is also best friends with Amidships so this should help to bolster the chemistry in the locker room and on the field for the Salamanders. Also helps that Hartline had a great season himself with 90 tackles, 2 TFLs, 4 FFs, 3 FRs, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, and 7 pass deflections. Berlin looks to be building a great and strong front 7 if Hartline can continue to improve alongside Amidships! With that, I grade this pick here as an SSS grade for value and the potential here as well!
For the eleventh overall pick, we have the defending champs here as the Honolulu Hahalua select their successor to Dexter at QB with OrbitingDeath, aka Nova Montagne , QB from London. I kinda like the pick though it seems that he will have to sit behind Dexter akin to Rodgers when he had to sit behind Favre from 05 to 08. However, I do see the upside here if Honolulu can continue to develop their players greatly as they always seem to do! Thus, I give this pick an A, maybe an S if Nova improves rapidly.
For the 12th overall pick, the Yeti selected another familiar face with qWest, aka Rocky Moreaux, WR from Dallas. I love the pick here as it provides insurance to the Yeti as some of their older skill position players age out and provides LL with another target as they hopefully retool this offseason and get back into playoff contention. With that being said, I give this pick an S tier pick due to situation and value here.
For the 13th overall pick, the Sailfish here (aka the Frost Lmaps) went with best player available and selected Dip, aka Dip Dhillon, WR from Bondi Beach. I like the pick as although they were just in the Utilmus, it can't hurt to have insurance and depth for skill positions and have a chance to get another potential star for cheap, especially since Dhillon is a max earner and eager to do so. With that said, I'm giving the pick here an S grade for the value and continuance of their contention ways.
For the 14th and final pick of the first round, the Silverbacks decide to take TacocaT, Michael Touchback, RB from Minnesota. To be honest, I'm not feeling the pick not because of the player but because they took an RB in the first round and I feel that Tacoca would have been available in the 2nd round (generally I don't believe in picking RBs in the first round). Though, due to Michael's potential, I won't dock the Backs too hard since they addressed defensive help with their other pick. I give this pick an A grade all things considered.
All in all, I hope you guys enjoyed my amateurish first time draft analysis for the first round of the S37 draft! I wish all these players good luck in their ISFL careers!!
