I have been trying to figure out where I might land in the upcoming Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL) draft during this whole scouting process. With my first player, Tugg Speedman, I didn’t have much in the way of expectations since I was new to the International Simulation Football League (ISFL) at the time while also being a General Manager for the Nashville Stars in the Pro Baseball Experience (PBE) for many seasons. Skill positions seem to be less valued due to defensive needs in the DSFL and even the ISFL if it’s a stacked enough class. For example, in the DSFL draft for Tugg I was the last pick of the second round as a WR and maybe the second one taken (I wish I remembered). In the ISFL draft for Tugg, I was the last pick of the first round as a top 5 max earner and the third receiver taken I believe.
This time around, I am curious where a proven max earning user gets me as a running back in regards to the draft. Will I be a top 5 pick? First round? Second round? I’m truly unsure and I’m even more unsure of what team will take me. Maybe running back is a bit more desirable early than a wide receiver or sometimes it just really depends on the user. Either way, I am going to break down where I think I might end up in the upcoming DSFL draft.
At this time, I think I have had all of the DSFL teams reach out to me. As someone who has done the majority of their teams scouting in the PBE, it can be daunting or easy to put off until the last minute but I always think it’s worth reaching out to people if you have your picks and didn’t trade them away. So like most articles you see like this, I will break down each team and the likelihood of them drafting me based on their running back situation (my analysis might be off due to call-ups or people going IA) and our scouting discussion/lack thereof.
Bondi Beach Buccaneers : C-
This might be a common theme for this article but Bondi currently has a S38 running back in Armor Queen who was actually just taken as a top 10 pick in the ISFL draft that just happened. As far as I know, they won’t get called up yet due to their TPE but could be a call-up after another season. I had a brief conversation with Bondi Beach with no follow-ups so I am not sure they have a huge need for me right away. Maybe if I slide in the draft they would take best available player and grab me but it seems a bit unlikely so I am giving them a C- on the likelihood of drafting me.
Dallas Birddogs : C
My waiver team! It was cool to be on a playoff team after getting picked up on waivers. I scored a touchdown and had a couple carries, I can’t complain. At the time of writing this article, I actually reached out to Dallas to see if they would draft me while acknowledging that running back may not be the biggest of needs for them. Lanefrost, as far as I know, is going to be down with Dallas again and who wants to pick up another running back if you have other needs to address. So with all that said, I am giving Dallas a C for their likelihood of drafting me.
Kansas City Coyotes : C+
As I mentioned in my ramblings at the beginning of the article, I don’t know how far I slide, if I do at all (I think I will). That being said, running back isn’t the biggest need here for Kansas City and while they might take one if I slide far enough I am not totally convinced it will happen… yet. We had a good conversation as I am always one to not just ask questions and get out unless that is what the user wants but I’m all-in-all I think the Coyotes grade out as a C for drafting me due to the need not being there for them unless they go best player available later in the draft.
London Royals : A-
This is the first instance where a team may actually truly need a running back in this draft (I think). With the call up of Danny Nedelko (shout out Crunk for the Idles reference) it appears they have a decent size hole in their offense. Now, that being said I think if there are other things to address then they might wait on a running back but there’s a connection here between myself and London. This was the team that draft my first player Tugg Speedman and even though the GM’s are not the same, I think if they still have some of the old heads in the War Room they will recommend me. I would love to go back to London if I could, still the greatest locker room I’ve been a part of across all sim leagues. I had a brief conversation with one of the GM’s and I’m currently waiting to hear back on a couple questions but as of right now, London grades out as an A- on the likelihood of drafting me.
Minnesota Grey Ducks : A
I had a nice conversation with Repgnar which is actually the second time they have reached out (the first being waivers and gauging things but I was taken before they could grab me). Repgnar is on the Silverbacks and we had some overlap in the New York locker room which I enjoyed. They know what I’m about as a user and what I can bring to a locker room and a team with my earning. It sounds like running back is a position of need and has been for the Grey Ducks for about a season or two (maybe). But based on my conversation I feel like the likelihood of being drafted by Minnesota is an A mainly because I’m not sure of any other major needs within the team but they are pretty keen on me in my opinion.
Norfolk Sea Wolves : B+
This was another team that reached out and had a brief conversation with me for scouting. I was asked the usual questions and I found out that they did have a need for a running back but only after quarterback. I think with that, if those are their two biggest needs, I think there’s a decent chance that I can land in Norfolk which is fine by me. Looking at their roster page (always a risk of not being updated) but it appears they have two different IA running backs which is certainly beneficial to me. I am curious if teams would rather draft a running back first before quarterback but either way, another team who is very likely to grab my player so I am giving them a grade of B+.
Portland Pythons : B
I had a really great conversation with one of the GM’s of Portland during the scouting process. This was actually my waiver team with my first player Tugg Speedman. As I mentioned earlier, it was nice talking about non-ISFL things before getting into the questions. It’s much more personable and gives me somewhat of an idea of what that locker room looks/war room looks like or could look like. Right now Portland has a 180-ish TPE running back that happens to be IA so there’s a decent chance these guys pick me up with their second round pick if I’m available since they have bigger needs to address like quarterback and wide receiver. Either way, I think the likelihood of being taken by Portland is a B and I’m here for it.
Tijuana Luchadores : B
This was another fun and enjoyable conversation that was a mixture of fun questions and regular “have to ask” questions. I got the impression that this could be a very possible landing spot as they have what appears to be two IA running backs, some solid wide receivers, and a good earning quarterback. I’m not sure of their biggest needs with call-ups though but I would say a running back would be up there. It sounds like defense might be a bigger need than running back but time will tell.
This was a ton of fun to do and I always enjoy being scouted and learning about teams and asking questions about how I will fit into their team and system. I mentioned multiple times and I’ll do so once more that I truly have no idea how this draft will play out and that I really do think I could be a top pick or slide into the second round based on team needs. Defense usually goes early and if there’s a need at quarterback I could see that prioritize over anything else, at least offensively. I can’t wait to see where Frank Dux ends up and to get his career officially started. Thanks for reading
