I had the honor and privilege to sit down with up-and-comer cornerback prospect @King Jackson. He showed exactly why he is one of the best defensive players available in the next ISFL draft in just a short conversation. Take some time to read this excellent interview with the King.
Dom: Hey there! Thank you for talking the time to talk with me. I know the ISFL is ecstatic to welcome a player at your position—especially one with your distinct skill set. Cornerbacks, especially good ones, can be hard to come by. Have you always played cornerback, even throughout your high school and college career at Jackson State?
King Jackson: In HS I play CB WR RB Wildcat QB punt return n kick return but yes I always played Corner even on my national travel team I’ve always looked up to guys like Ramsey n Deion sanders
Dom: Those are great role models! Both of those guys completely redefined the game and what it means to be a defensive back.
One thing I would like to know about you, Mr. Jackson—what happened to make you quit football in your senior year of college?
King Jackson: My younger brother who had schizophrenia passed away at 19 and I also had a daughter and I had to be there for my family in our time of need
Dom: Wow, that’s a heartbreaking story. I’m sorry you had to go through that. It really shows a lot about your character and the type of man that you are to put your prestigious football career and education on hold to take care of your family.
I know the football community at large is excited to see you make your return. What aspect of your game sets you apart from the other defensive backs?
King Jackson: I’m a big physical corner I can tackle I’m really good in zone coverage I’m really good in man I love to press at the line ion think there’s another corner who has all these abilities n attributes and also is as physical as me
Dom: Wow, I love what self-confidence! There has been a disturbing lack of elite corners in our game lately. I’m very excited to see you start your journey to end that dry spell.
Are there any ISFL teams that you like in particular and hope to be drafted to? Are you okay with a rebuild or do you what to compete immediately?
King Jackson: I’m ok w a rebuild honestly I don’t mind growing w a team but I would aleast like a rebuilding team tht has a decent to good offense
Dom:That makes sense. That can sometimes be tough to judge on rebuilding teams--whether or not they are going to build a good offense.
Well, let's see if we can get a fun question or two before we wrap this up. Would you rather be an extra in a box office hit or the main protagonist in a little-known indie movie?
King Jackson: I mean yea but not every rebuild team has a bad offense n defense some usually be good on 1 side of the ball n I wanna go to any team frfr but 1 w a good offense is ideal n I would be the antagonist I’ve always liked the bad guys my favorite villain is the Joker
Dom: Good stuff! The villains in today's films have really showed a much richer depth of character as opposed to the protagonist. And on the field, the cornerback can sometimes feel like the antagonist to the offense. Today's society wants to see high-powered offenses going back and forth and running up the score, so the shut-down corner can sometimes be viewed in a negative light. He doesn't make big, flashy offensive plays, he stops them from happening. So that makes a lot of sense that you would prefer the antagonist roles.
One more before we have to go: Would you rather have a penny for every step you take or a quarter for every jumping jack you do?
King Jackson: Jumping jacks bc I walk all the time n Ik that’ll add up up but doing jumping jacks for quarters go addd up quicker
Dom: Correct answer! Walking is all fine and dandy and the bonus money is good, but the jumping jacks could be your new 7-figure job as well as getting in insane shape!
Well, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with me, Mr. Jackson. I look forward to hearing your name called in the ISFL Draft!
King Jackson: Exactly every 4 is a buck you could lowkey run up a bag w tht n you would be in amazing shape
And yessir yessir thnk you getting drafted is the plan.
If you're looking for the next great ISFL cornerback, look no further.
