The San Jose Sabercats had a long season, from starting the season at 3-1 and losing off 8 games in a row and finishing 4-10, the organization had a lot of decisions to make. Extending Ethan Hunt for 1 year, Extending Clee Hardool, Shane Weston, Dan Miller, and John Canton for multiple years as helped ease the pain that the team has faced. The GMs only one other area they could look for to improve on their poor Season 2 which was the Draft, since there were no other big Free Agents left to sign. The Sabercats ended up picking up 8 new players in the Season 3 draft, and the breakdown is as follows.
With the 4th Overall pick of the Season Three Draft, The San Jose Sabercats Select: Benson Bayley, Cornerback, out of LSU.
Benson Bayley was a huge addition for the Sabercats at Number 4 overall. He will be opposite of John Canton and play with a dangerous Duo of Ja Brill and Clee Hardool. The Sabercats were looking for a number 2 cornerback after Trading for Matthew Peterson ended up poorly. The Sabercats also looked to add a Cornerback last draft, but Xavier Newman didn’t pan out as well as the team thought of him. Bayley is a smart choice here because he brings dedication and a wonderful work ethic, as well as already showing activity throughout the Locker Room. Look for Bayley to be an important player in the Sabercats Defense moving forward, it will be a learning process for him since he is the first ever first round draft pick to be selected without playing a single down in the NSFL.
With the 5th Overall pick of the Season Three Draft, the San Jose Sabercats Select: Iyah Blewitt, Kicker, out of Queens.
Iyah was a Waiver Pick-up for the Las Vegas Legion this past season. He kicked 91% on extra points but a very poor 63.6% on Field Goals. Something Blewitt is going to have to work on is going to be his accuracy and leg strength, but another smart move by the Sabercats. After having inactive kickers for the last two season, even if Blewitt went inactive, he is a huge upgrade for Special teams and will make impacts in kicking and punting immediately. The Sabercats decided to take another safe pick here, believing that Blewitt is the kicker of the future and the Organization is getting a wonderful guy here.
With the 21st Pick of the Season Three Draft, the San Jose Sabercats Select: Calkewlated Chambers III, Defensive Tackle, out of LSU.
With another LSU alumni here, the Sabercats are insuring that their Defensive Line will be a force moving forward. After dealing with only two active guys on the D-Line in Dan Miller and Chidubem Okonwo, it is nice to see the Sabercats investing more into that aspect of the team. Cake as the Sabercats players are already calling him was a Waiver Pickup late in the season for the Sabercats. He has shown his activity throughout the Locker room and has been in the weight room time and time again. He looks to be a promising player with a huge upside, and the Sabercats were able to grab him in the 3rd round.
With the 34th Pick of the Season Three Draft, the San Jose Sabercats Select: Arjen de Ligt, Defensive End, No College.
Arjen was picked up to insure some depth on the Defensive Line. He has shown speed and some strength, and looks to team up with Dan Miller to learn the ropes around San Jose. Hopefully the team is able to get him into the locker room and onto the field, but only time will tell what will happen with Arjen.
With the 50th Pick of the Season Three Draft, The San Jose Sabercats Select: Matt Edilio, Linebacker, out of Michigan.
Matt Edilio is a Linebacker that can quite possibly be a blessing in disguise for the Sabercats. After trading away AC Hackett, the Linebacking core of the San Jose Sabercats has a lot left to be desired. Luke Chunk can help guide Matt Edilio on the field and hopefully get him up to par with the Sabercats defensive schemes before the season takes place.
With the 57th Pick of the Season Three Draft, The San Jose Sabercats Select: Ben Hartsock, Tight End, Out of The Ohio State University.
Ben Hartsock will line up next to Break Bottles with the San Jose Sabercats this year. A Blocking Tight End that can help ensure that Ethan Hunt can run around and dance all he wants to in the pocket, and is a huge target at 6’6 and 280 Pounds. Look for Hartsock to be a red zone threat as well.
With the 58th Pick of the Season Three Draft, The San Jose Sabercats Select: Sal Ifedemi, Defensive End, out of Clemson.
Another Defensive End drafted by the Sabercats. Their biggest problem was the Defense last year, and the lack of their ability to get to the opposing Quarterbacks. Look for Sal to add depth at the Line and there might be some position battles going on throughout preseason.
With the 66th Pick of the Season Three Draft, The San Jose Sabercats Select: Viktor DeMar, Wide Receiver, out of Wisconsin.
Viktor DeMar fills the Slot Wide Receiver for the San Jose Sabercats. In a draft where they focused entirely on Defense, adding a Speedster at 66 could be a steal. A friend of the Owner of the league, look for Viktor to hopefully make some splashes in San Jose’s offense and help get the ball out of Hunt’s hands a lot faster now.
The San Jose Sabercats were able to address much needed problems along their defense this year in the draft. Adding a number 2 Cornerback, another Defensive Tackle, and depth throughout that side of the ball. Look for the Sabercats to game plan and head in the right direction following this draft, and possibly make a run at the Wild Card in the ASFC. Big Changes are coming in San Jose and this is only the start, with Lord Nibbler guiding the team with Ja Brill, anything is possible.
