Interview between game 1 and game 5
This is Ron Burgundy here again with Portland's cornerback Matt Jones. Matt, What is your initial appraisal of the defensive work you guys have been doing? What's your initial evaluation of what you've seen? It seems like you guys have been flying around and getting your hands on a lot of balls, whether it be an individual or team drills. RB
Thanks for having me Ron. Everyone strives to communicate effectively. Playing along with the plan that was set. Just try to show up each day and assert yourself. Get some plays. Be aware of your leverage and weaknesses. MJ
In preparing for the position you're in now, how helpful was it for you to spend those few weeks with the club during the preseason? RB
It was a significant benefit. I think I picked up the defense really quickly. I had to put everything together fast. I mean, I am learning a brand new playbook in only 4 games. It is very hard to do. I'm just playing shrewdly and moving quickly right now and everything is clicking. MJ
How crucial is it for you to play quickly and simply feel more at ease on defense? RB
knowing that I can find assistance if needed. Being well-versed in the defense. Just talking to the safeties and DBs makes it easier for me to keep playing quickly. When I know they have my back I play much better. The safeties we have here make me feel like I am home. MJ
Was Portland one of the reasons you wanted to be drafted there because you liked the defense and what they wanted you to do with that defense? RB
Yes, it was very big. The general attitude around here is to win a championship or a division, and that's why I came. I'll act in that manner. They drafted me for a reason. To provide results. MJ
Knowing the defensive strategy used by the Pythons, did you focus on anything in particular during the summer to adjust your game to what they were looking for from you here? RB
Yes, but mainly only the fundamentals and fundamental techniques to ensure that I play in the best shape of my life. Getting a little bit leaner and then showing up for work. Moreover, my speed. I wanted to challenge myself because speed is important in my game. MJ
I am aware that the team's safeties have stated how beneficial it is to have a shutdown corner like you. You guys just appear to have a ton of talent spread out across this defense and team as a whole. How much space does that give you now that you're a part of one of the more talented defenses you've ever seen? RB
We are stacked man. We must continue to work every day. The safety personnel are aware of the exceptional nature of what we have on our side. We must continue putting in the labor and continue to work very hard. We all must play our best game every single game. MJ
What do you consider to be your strongest strength as a defensive back? How would you like to play, hypothetically? RB
Man being pressed in a corner. use my agility and speed. When I need to and when I want to I focus. Depending on the coverage, just speed is all I need to make plays happen. MJ
It appears that you guys have intercepted many passes so far, so I'm just interested what your group's thoughts are on the secondary at this time. RB
Man, the backup band is killing it right now. Everyone is performing well and is aware of their responsibilities. Everyone on the back end and the entire defense is playing fantastic defense right now, but we can always improve and fix the tiny things. Nevertheless, right now we're doing well because we're competing and getting for the ball, which is nice. MJ
Do you currently have the impression that consistency is standing by your side? RB
Yes, I genuinely believe I am capable of consistency, but it is still early. Though I still have a ways to go before I can truly test that consistency, I am confident that I will succeed. It's merely a matter of avoiding becoming bored and not underestimating the capacity of the receivers. I need to focus much harder and play every day like it's my last play on the field ever. MJ
What are some of the ways you push yourself to improve and reach that next level that you alluded to? RB
Just more of everything—mental, physical, etc. Just adjusting everything, or I'm working on everything I see as needing improvement. After practice, I stayed behind to take care of my body and go over everything in a meeting room, paying close attention to even the smallest of details. So far, I believe it has been treating me well, so all I have to do is keep up the good work. My skill development will be a huge priority with me. Without it, without constantly pushing myself I will not be successful. I was drafted high for a reason in the DSFL, I know I can provide results that is expected from me. MJ
Thank you for being here today Matt Jones. RB
Thanks for having me. MJ
