Note for graders: Jamdrian is in the upcoming ISFL draft. I don't know if this is relevant enough as draft media for the bonus. But figured I'd mentioned it just in case you're feeling generous
Even with two wins and a tie to raise team morale this season the Bondi Beach Buccaneers have no chance of getting into the playoffs. It’s instead confirmed by now that the Buccaneers will once again get the first overall pick in the draft. But! The team isn’t planning to just lay down for the rest of the season. The two final games are upon us, and we’ve only gotten better as the season progressed. The dream is finishing up with two final strong performances.
The thirteenth game of the season was played against the Tijuana Luchadores
6:36 left in the second quarter - 3rd and 13 on TIJ 36
Second to last game of the regular season and the Buccaneers are sporting a sexy black and white uniform for today’s game. I’d love to get my hand on one of those jerseys! But we’re here to talk about the game, so let’s get into it. It was quite a crazy first quarter with a lot of points scored for both teams. Bondi Beach has managed to snag a small lead by the time we jump in. Jamdrian is lined up against two players, which is never a good sign. We have rookie wide receiver Eli Prince, the running back known as Gucci Gurley. Jamdrian’s teammate will have to share the responsibility of coverage. Jamdrian is assigned to cover Prince and follows him as he moves diagonally towards the sideline. Gurley took a straighter path and the quarterback chose him. He’s mostly alone when the ball arrives. A few bounces off the hands causes some gasps, but he’s able to get control of it. And not only that, but he’s able to cut past the other defender and starts running. It takes about 20 yards before Jamdrian manages to catch up and take him down.
6:38 left in the third quarter - 3rd and 12 on BBB 13
After almost exactly one quarter later we’re back and dangerously close to the Buccaneers end zone. For this play Jamdrian sees an unfamiliar face. #3, Jay Money. Not that he’s never seen him before. Just not that often on this side of the field. The ball is snapped and Money runs straight into Jamdrian. Not sure if this was according to plan. But whatever their plan was, it worked. As they tumbled for a bit the Tijuana quarterback was given plenty of time to think about what to do. At this point we’re all a little confused why the play wasn’t just blown dead with offsetting pass interference calls. But at the last second Money manages to get free and step just out of range of Jamdrian, as the ball comes their way. Money hugged the ball tightly, hunched down, and just rushed over the line. Jamdrian had a hand on him at the end, but it wasn’t nearly enough.
1:15 left in the third quarter - 1st and 10 on BBB 21
We don’t often(read: never) report a play-by-play where Jamdrian isn’t the main defender part of the play. But this was such a major play at an important point of the game. Plus, Jamdrian really wasn’t involved much in this game. The vast majority of passes went to the right side of the field. Anyway, we’re just outside the red zone and Tijuana already has a 7-point lead. With barely one quarter left to play the Buccaneers had to stop this one. Or at least force only a field goal. There was heavy coverage on the pass defense side of things this play. Not a lot against the run, so the defensive coach read this one amazingly well. Because what happened was a fairly quick throw to the left. Towards Jamdrian and it appeared to be aimed at Jay Money. But out of nowhere Odom Jr came flying through the air and snagged the ball! No one expected this. I’m pretty sure no one even had eyes on Odom. Especially not the quarterback. It resulted in an oh-so important interception, and allowed the Buccaneers a chance to get back in it.
4:44 left in the fourth quarter - 2nd and 18 on TIJ 9
We’re nearing the end of the game and sadly no scores have been given out since last we spoke. But the difference is only a touchdown plus an extra point away. Anything can happen. But for anything to happen the Buccaneers defense need to once again stop Tijuana in their tracks. We find Jamdrian far the the field on Tijuana’s side after a false start penalty was called against them. Jamdrian has because of that given ample spacing between himself and the rookie, Eli. But as the ball snaps he moves up after he notices Eli slowing down. They meet each other maybe five yards from the line of scrimmage. And then Prince makes a quick cut to the left in what was clearly a set play. Their quarterback expected this and had full confidence in Eli getting open for that split second. #1 handles the reception beautifully and even has some space to move up the field. Jamdrian is however able to throw himself down at Eli’s feet, getting just enough for him to kick himself in the heel and lose all speed and balance he previously had. Not a bad play, but not enough for a first down.
As the game ended the Buccaneers didn’t manage to get any more offensive pressure. At the final whistle Tijuana managed another field goal to really hammer the nail in the coffin. Still a good sight for Bondi Beach who are looking to keep growing and do better next season.
The fourteenth game of the season was played against the Minnesota Grey Ducks
12:00 left in the first quarter - 3rd and 6 on MINN 49
Even though we’re only three minutes into the game, Jamdrian has been busy. A lot of plays so far have been on his side of the field. Very much the opposite of what happened in the previous game. And in this game, the last of the season, we’ve so far seen a captain vs captain matchup between Jamdrian and Minnesota tight end Zero Gibson II. And Gibson has reeled in some passes already to slowly shift down the field. And this play turned out kind of similar, but with a twist. They line up against each other, and the play quickly reveals itself to be about the pass. Gibson takes off like a rocket straight ahead with no care for Jamdrian. He just cut slightly to the inside to get in between Jamdrian and the ball. It looked like he could’ve had even more space had they allowed him to move further down the field before passing the ball. But it came flying quite early. With Gibson’s positioning it was a mostly easy catch. Although, he had to jump a bit for it. And that slight jump together with the required slowing down to turn and face the ball made it an easy tackle for Jamdrian. Even though Gibson got the ball, Jamdrian got him before he had even landed.
13:14 left in the second quarter - 2nd and 16 on BBB 48
After the first quarter Bondi Beach had taken the lead. The team has been really strong early on in the recent games. The big question is if they manage to hold on to the lead… Minnesota is once again on the offensive, using their captain tight end in a receiver position. As the game started busy for Jamdrian, it did slow down quite a bit in terms of balls coming towards him. The most recent ten minutes or so of play has not yielded anything on the left side. But for this play it changes once again. Gibson this time lines out quite widely. Almost hugging the sideline. Which is unexpected because it doesn’t give him much space to work with. Jamdrian considered whether this was a decoy play where they tried to get him to line up as far away from the play as possible. While he couldn’t just leave Gibson alone. It did make him step slightly closer towards the middle instead of setting up straight opposite of the tight end. But alas, it wasn’t a decoy. Or at least didn’t turn into one. As the ball was snapped I don’t even know if the Minnesota quarterback looked up before he threw the ball. He was getting swarmed pretty quickly, but didn’t even consider the fact that there are other potential targets on the field. With such a short time for anything to really happen, Gibson stepped up a couple of yards before he got the ball. And Jamdrian barely had time to think before Gibson, and the ball, were just a couple of inches away from him. This might’ve been the easiest tackle he’s ever made as he just stood there and was basically ran in to.
1:05 left in the third quarter - 1st and 10 on BBB 40
At this point the game had really gotten away from both teams’ defensive squads. Almost every drive in the last two quarters had resulted in some points. Minnesota especially had become quite efficient at forcing new first downs. And as you can read above, they had just gotten yet another set of downs. Lining up a lot closer to the middle this time, Minnesota only had two players lined up as receivers. Gibson being one of them. As some might’ve expected, this was a rare run play which Jamdrian ended up being involved in. Unfortunately, when a wide cornerback is involved in run defense it usually means that the ball carrier made it quite far. And yes, that’s what happened. The ball was handed off to rookie running back Cape The Party Rhino who made his way past multiple defensive Buccaneers. Things became more crowded for him however as he reached the 30 yard line. Four Buccaneers all came down on his position and made it a little too tight to make it any further. He made a final attempt by cutting towards the outside, but that’s exactly where Jamdrian came in from. The Rhino tried to squeak through but Jamdrian got him off balance and down on the ground.
5:12 left in the fourth quarter - 2nd and 12 on BBB 38
Last in the fourth it’s not looking good for the Buccaneers. Down by almost two dozen points there wasn’t much motivation left for the final minutes of the final regular season game. But everyone still showed up. Even though playoffs were out of the picture before this game, there was still a point difference to play for. To make the numbers look a little bit better. And to “spice” things up for Jamdrian’s final play report of the season, he had a new opponent to face off against: Wide receiver Branden Rojas. This play was Jamdrian’s very last one where he was actively involved so I figured it would be a good one to end this article series on. It’s not a very exciting one, but still a solid one. Lining up as usual on the wide left side, Jamdrian and Rojas stood about five yards away from each other. With a few minutes to go, and a solid Minnesota lead, it was surprising to see them continuing to pass the ball instead of running it out. But that’s what happened for most of the game. And for this specific play Rojas ran right up to Jamdrian who stayed put, but ready to go if needed. There wasn’t any sign of this being a deep or wide play. They definitely wanted the ball to stay inbounds at the very least. And they got what they wanted, but not a lot of yards gained. As Jamdrian didn’t budge there wasn’t much else Rojas could take advantage of to break free and decided to just turn and try to move back towards their quarterback a bit. This gave him the attention of the quarterback, and ultimately the ball as well. It was a pretty simple throw and catch. But thanks to Jamdrian being quite literally on top of Rojas nothing happened after the catch. Our protagonist came at it with a big hug and pushed the ball carrier to the ground. A solid coverage play to wrap this thing up with.
There we have it. The final report for this season. Unfortunately it came in a game which ended quite poorly. Although the Buccaneers were able to get one more touchdown before the end of the game. Now it’s time to look towards the offseason, the upcoming ISFL draft, and then the next DSFL season where Bondi Beach are looking to keep improving and get those wins!
