With draft season upon us, I thought I’d write up how I see the draft needs for each team in the DSFL as a new player. Feel free to correct me!
Kansas City Coyotes – The defending champs have few holes in their lineup, but the ones they do have are on the same side of the ball. Both outside CBs and both linebacker positions need filling this offseason. The good news is the Season 41 draft class has some real playmakers at both positions. At the cornerback position is speedy cover corner Lavondrius Dingle who maybe be one of the fastest players in the draft but will require a lot more training to be a viable starter. Another cover corner to target is Synystyr Gates, another speedy player who is a bit more polished than Dingle. On the linebacker front, Jayden Alexander projects as a good run stuffer with high strength and tackling while on the other end of the spectrum, John Stark VIII is a more cerebral player whose lack of speed is made up for in high end play recognition.
London Royals – After a disappointing 5-9 season and last place finish in the North, the Royals are looking to rebound with a stellar draft. The number one need for the Royals this offseason is the safety position as well as open spots along the offensive line. In the trenches, adding someone like Modest Mussorgsky will go a long way. Mussorgsky is a strong, ox-like lineman who is balanced in both run and pass protection. If the Royals want more specialization, Bubba Chubb might be their man with his slight edge in pass pro over run pro and his above average intelligence for a prospect at the position. The Safety class is headlined by Rico Savage, a ballhawk out of South Florida who can also play the run. Savage has an elite ceiling as he’s a threat to intercept passes both over the top and in the middle of the field. All in all, the Royals will need multiple hits in this draft to catch up to the top teams in the division.
Minnesota Grey Ducks – While the Grey Ducks fell short in the playoffs, they still finished with one of the best records in the league. For this draft, the Ducks will be looking to fill holes at safety, cornerback, and linebacker positions. While the Ducks should have Rico Savage squarely in their sights, a good backup plan if he’s not there at their draft pick is Garth Silver, a Center Field safety prospect with good spped. If Lavondrius Dingle and/or Synystyr Gates aren’t available for the Ducks, Cover Corner Bradley Welch, Jr would be a nice consolation as one of the leading TPE earners so far among the corner class. We’ve covered the linebackers extensively so far as it seems to be a need for every team and the Ducks are no different, any of the aforementioned linebackers would be good additions to the team.
Portland Pythons – Last but not least in the North, the Pythons are looking to add to a Championship-ready team. With no Safeties and only one offensive lineman, these are obvious areas of improvement for the Pythons. In addition to Rico Savage, the Pythons can look to add a Center Fielder like Amanda HugAndKiss to upgrade their secondary with serious speed. If the Pythons need a Mauler, look no further than Cheeky Lad or the aptly named Saveour Piethons. Cheeky is the more polished prospect of the two but Saveour has a ton of potential and would be a ceiling pick. Lastly, the Pythons could be looking to bolster their defensive line by adding a defensive end or two. Leo Stud is the fastest pass rusher in the draft while Power Rusher Buster McBain is the strongest. Special shoutout to defensive end Bruce White who is a rare combination of speed and power.
Bondi Beach Bucs – Down in the Southern Division, the Bucs have nowhere to go but up after finishing dead last in the entire league, only managing two wins all season. With needs at offensive line and safety, the Bucs should be looking to spend early draft picks on these positions. As always for teams that need a Safety, Rico Savage should be at the top of their Big Board. If a pure free safety is what they’re leaning towards, you can’t go wrong with Mary Marie who has a good blend of football IQ and speed. On the front line, the Bucs can’t go wrong with offensive lineman Justin Willis, the prospect with the highest run block and pass block attributes in the draft. Another exciting prospect on the line is Trent Silverback who possesses ideal athleticism to go with his high base run and pass blocking. With those two positions covered, the Bucs should fill the TE spot with up and comer Craig Brand, a possession TE from across the Atlantic. Brand is a raw prospect due to not playing football until University, but he’s a quick learner and should be drafted for no other reason than that he promises to adorn a kilt after every win!
Dallas Birddogs – The Birddogs are coming off a successful season and are looking to build towards a championship this draft season. At the top of their list should be both the defensive end and defensive tackle positions along with taking a hard look at tight end. Together with Buster McBain and Bruce White, the Birddogs should consider Logjammed McBobface a Speed Rusher who is surprisingly strong. To pair with these prospects along the inside of their defensive line, the Birddogs would be remiss if they didn’t draft the likes Interior Rusher Dub Redd or All Purpose defensive tackle Billy Jor-El, both would be forces in the middle. While many don’t see tight end as a premium position, having an elite one gives teams a giant edge. While the Birddogs have plenty of pass catchers, an elite blocking tight end could give their quarterback more time to find the open receiver. Enter Peña Nieto, the best blocking tight end in the draft.
Norfolk Seawolves – What do the defending South champions need after a very successful season? Add. More. Firepower. Although a heavy running team, adding at least one wideout would give a new dimension to this offense. Without a single WR on the roster, look for the Seawolves to heavily scout wideouts like Speed Receiver Oliver Tolliver or Possession receiver Sean Robinson, being able to land both would be a major boon. On the other side of the ball, the Seawolves will need to add at least one defensive tackle and one cornerback to play opposite Brooks Piggott. For the former, Jumbo Edward would be a great addition as an Interior Rusher or if they want a do it all tackle they can target Nwoye Musa. For cornerback, the options include Bill Cravy the slot corner extraordinaire or Benjamin Duvernay if they want another outside cornerback to matchup with teams #2 wide receiver.
Tijuana Luchadores – The Luchadores didn’t live up to preseason expectations but are looking to reverse what happened last season and prove their doubters wrong. First up on the list of to dos should be adding to the defensive line. You can’t win without pressuring the opposing quarterback and with only one defensive lineman on the roster, this is a major area of need. With a lot of teams having a need here, the Luchadores would be lucky to land Buster McBain or Bruce White but may have to lean on their deep scouting department to uncover potential gems like Run Stuffer Banjo O’Kudah who will shutdown opposing running backs, leaving his defensive line compadres to run free after the quarterback. To pair with someone like Banjo, a Speed Rusher like Billy Snow would be a match made in Cielo. To shore up their defense, another smart add would be a cornerback. Ivan Baldwin could cover the best slot receivers in college football and should be able to transition to the pros without much issue.
