The hunt for the S39 Ultimus has a few surprises, but ultimately the ending was pretty predictable in terms of standings. In the ASFC first round, the 8-8 New Orleans Second Line faced the 11-5 Austin Copperheads, who despite having the same record as the Arizona Outlaws ended up with the second seed due to tiebreakers. As for NOLA, they managed to survive a bloodbath of a race for the third seed, as they only had one more win then the 4th place team in the San Jose Sabercats. Despite the Copperheads getting out to a 18-0 lead due to three field goals, a Queen Elizabeth the Second touchdown pass, and a safety NOLA surprised everyone by managing to come back and win the game 22-21, scoring all of their points in the 4th quarter.
Yes despite it looking like the ASFC would be decided between Austin and Arizona, NOLA would not go down quietly and started a bit of a Cinderella run. NOLA would then go on to face the Outlaws in Arizona, who are fighting for their unprecedented third straight Ultimus. NOLA would start the game off strong with a Elessar Jones touchdown pass to The Stig. Wendall Sailor would respond with a touchdown pass of his own to Captain Billy Stinkwater, and a field goal from Witchqueen and another Sailor touchdown pass, this time to Kotoni Staggs, would give the Outlaws a 17-7 lead. A NOLA field goal from Alfonso Dos Santos would cut that lead to 17-10, but two Witchqueen Field goals would make the lead 23-10 heading into halftime.
Arizona would go on to cut the NOLA Cinderella run short, as a touchdown run from Danny Nedelko and a pick 6 from Mark Goodhead would put the game out of reach, despite NOLA trying their best to come back. Arizona wins 37-24, punching thier ticket to a potential third straight Ultimus championship. Arizona making it was not much of a surprise to me in the end, despite NOLA trying to play spoiler. Now as for the NSFC, the Chicago Butchers would face the Sarasota Sailfish in the first round, in a tough division that was ruled by the 13-3 Yellowknife Wraths. Both of these teams were 1-1 vs Yellowknife however, so they would absolutely love to play spoiler.
Chicago would start out strong, with two toucdown passes by Tom Carter to Walter McKinley and Austin Morley respectively. Sarasota would respond with two Swantavius King field goals making it 14-6, however a Lalu Muhammad Zohri touchdown run would make it 21-6 heading into halftime. Another Sarasota field goal would make it 21-9 in the third quarter, and Chicago would respond with a field goal of their own in the 4th. Sarasota would attempt to come back with two touchdown passes from Carter Knight to Johnny Blaze Jr, but an unsuccessful two point conversation and a missed 60+ yard field goal would end the game with Chicago moving on to the Conference championship.
Against the Wraiths, Chicago would start the game red hot, scoring two touchdowns from aFrank Dux and a Lalu Muhammad Zohri run would give them a 14-0 lead. Yellowknife would respond with a touchdown pass from Adrian St.Christmas to Bernd D Brot, but a missed extra point from Double Doing would make it 14-6. Chicago would score a David Doug field goal to make it 17-6, but then the Wraiths took control. The next four touchdowns were for the Wraiths, including another St.Christmas pass to Bernd D Brot, two touchdown runs from Kumquat Archipelago and Adebayo Akinfenwa, and a pick 6 from Jack McPherson would make it a 34-17 lead for Yellowknife. Chicago would get another David Doug field goal, but Yellowknife would cruise the rest of the game beyond a Vincent Sharpei Jr touchdown pass from Carter and would win 48-27 to punch thier ticket to the Ultimus.
As for what happened in the Ultimus, it would not be a close game at all after halftime. The game may have been 10-6 at halftime in favor of the Wraiths, but the Outlaws would not score anymore points after that as the Wraiths would impose thier will on them to win thier first Ultimus championship in 11 seasons 34-6. Kumquat Archipelago would have two touchdown passes and St.Christmas would be perfect on the day with 4 touchdown passes with the other two going to Bernd D Brot and Calvin Spiff. Double Doink would also kick two field goals. We at Yellowknife would celebrate hard, with me celebrating the fact that I finally have my first Ultimus championship.
This was actually supposed to be an Off-season Tasks entry, but it didn't seem like it was exactly what they wanted when I was about halfway done with it and I just figured I might as well get paid for what I already wrote and expand on it. Thank you for reading and I hope to see you all on the field!
