Hey all! I’m here with one of Honolulu’s season 40 draft picks, Matthew Fryars. Future safety for the Lua but currently spending his season with the Kansas City Coyotes . Excited to get a deep dive into your players story and hopes for the future. First off, how you doing?
I’m doing great, thanks for asking! I’m excited to be here! How are you?
Doing great. It’s always a good when I get to chat with teammates and friends like this.
So to quickly dive in. Give us a little backstory of how you got your name and what lead you to choosing the safety position. Excited to here how Matthew unfolded.
It’s actually kind of a funny story of how I chose my name, I ran a few through my mind, but I ended up choosing Matthew Fryars because I wanted it to somewhat resemble myself and what I do. Matthew is my middle name, and I work at Chik-fil-a which led to me choosing “Fryars” it seemed like a funny but good sounding name.
As for choosing to be a Safety, I feel that Safety is a very interesting and important position, and it seemed the most fun and attracting to me. I wanted to be able to make big plays and be an essential part of my team.
Haha I love it. Safety is an absolutely underrated position. So someone taking that on full force is a huge asset for the team. I wish I could give you a little more heat for it but you went with a Tennessee Titans player as your render correct?
Yes, I choose the Titans’ Safety, Kevin Byard, I think he’s a very underrated Safety in the NFL. Originally I had planned to use number 22 and use Derrick Henry or another Safety, but I felt Henry is not quite the build I was looking for, and I felt Byard gave a look that I liked and he’s a player I really like both on and off the field. I recently changed my number to 31 to match him as well.
As much as I have always hated the titans, I’ve always really liked Henry. Byard type player is defiantly someone we’d welcome open arms to join the teams. I believe Valor made you a pretty sweet signature right after the draft with him in the HON colors. This is actually how we figured out you’d decided to come back after being IA a bit. We were all super excited to see that. During the draft you had been drafted during the time a lot of IA players were being drafted. We got super lucky (it was destiny) we got you. Matthew fit a position of need for us was the biggest thing. I think draft notes we had submitted was simply “please come back” and by gosh it worked. Haha. Can you explain a bit about how creation to IA back to being a key player all worked out for you?
Well, let’s start at the beginning. I happened to be bored scrolling through the FBGM Reddit when I came across the ISFL post, normally I don’t bother with server recruitments but this one intrigued me and I decided to give it a shot. I had no idea how anything worked or what the game
(Draft Day Football) was. I created my player and figured I’d just go with it, I was a late joiner and missed the DSFL draft, but KCC reached out and picked me up. I was still trying to get accustomed to the league and was in a very busy time of year at work. I ended up kind of falling inactive primarily due to being over scheduled at work and having a lot of studying and other school activities going on. I decided to watch the draft and see if anyone would give me a shot. When I saw I was drafted and especially not even with your last pick, I couldn’t help but smile, especially when I heard “HON simply says… uh.. ‘Please come back..’” honestly that was hilarious, but it was also the push I needed to get back into the league, and now I’ve been checking it a lot more frequently and was able to sort some issues I was having with it by swapping my setup and browsers. And now I’m very excited for an opportunity to play a big role with Honolulu and hopefully have a successful career with Fryars.
And to add on, around the time after I got drafted my work schedule lightened up a lot, it seems like it was all fated to happen.
Absolutely meant to be then! I’ll tell you everyone in HON feels like we struck gold with this pick. Coming off a couple tank seasons this draft was one we are super excited about. From pick 1 all the way until the end. We have no doubts Fryars is gonna have a huge roll in the success over the seasons to come.
You mentioned KCC picking you up on waivers there. You just missed playing with a good handful of our starting defense. Our LB Caleb H, CB Seth L, and myself with Luigi. We all played for the first of the KCC back 2 back championships. Seems you were able to step in and fill those shoes quickly!
You are spending a second season with KCC. And goals outside the potential 3 peat?
My main goal for this season is to improve enough to be a worthy starter and be able to make more plays on the field. I’m hoping to have better stats and higher ratings come the end of the year, and holding the Championship trophy once again of course.
Well we’ve definitely seen the big improvement in the earning and you should be Pro-bowl status near future if you keep it up. Would you say that aligns with your overall career goals as well? Looking for a Hall of Fame player or you looking for that bling bling ?
I would definitely love to be a Hall of Fame player by the end of my career, and hopefully one of the better Safeties. I want to make the other teams regret passing on me and give everything I can for Honolulu, and become known as the greatest 5th round steal of all time.
Oh the way things are going I have no doubt you’ll be considered one of the biggest steals of the draft.
We’re looking forward to starting that HON career for you next season. You got some big shoes to fill from our last championship run in Miles and MMFlex.
A couple what if questions for you here. If not safety why position do you think Matthew would be?
If he hadn’t been a Safety, I think he would most likely have been a Wide Receiver, in my head lore I imagine his father, Philip Fryars as a Wide Receiver who never went pro due to a career ending injury, and Matthew would have followed in his footsteps and became a Wide Receiver had he decided not to be a Safety.
Athleticism runs in the family there, you love to see it. On that sim alt topic. If not football what would matthew be doing? What other sport? Then if not sports what would his 9-5 be?
If he did another sport I think it would be basketball, with high speed and a lot of the reach that safeties have, I think that he could do well in basketball.
If not sports, I think he would be an amazing cook, I mean considering his name I’m sure he makes some great fried chicken.
Oh yeah. That was almost too easy for the 9-5 part. If his cooking is anything close to his play it sounds like we just figured out who will be manning the team cookout this summer.
In some of our first talks you had mentioned a league you were working on, similar to this. Tell us a bit about it and some similarities and differences from what you’ve seen here in the ISFL.
My league I had been considering shortly before joining the ISFL but the ISFL was a big part in inspiring me to pursue it. I wanted to make something similar but with a different setup. Instead of going from DSFL to ISFL, you follow a more realistic path, starting from high school and going up to College and then to the Pros. And I wanted to make it kore accessible to pursue other careers such as coaching, recruiting, scouting, GM, and even team ownership. I think having the ability to pursue a longer career and start from the very beginning makes it more fun and allows for a lot more to happen, it is going to be more difficult to run but I think it has the potential to be a very fun project. Another difference is that I currently am using FBGM, but I am considering other options that would allow for users to watch the game, which is something I think would make the league alot more fun. In the ISFL we have live simulations, but not quite live action, I think a live action aspect where you can see the players actions instead of reading them and watching dots or in FBGM’s case simply reading a play-by-play would be much more entertaining and rewarding. The ISFL has been a huge inspiration for me to create this league, and I’m hoping it can turn out to become something as good as the ISFL is. I haven’t been able to get a ton of recruitment, but I have gotten a lot of setup work done, and I’m hoping it’ll pick up and do well.
Thats awesome you have those different opportunities and glad you are able to relate to the ISFL and put your own twist on it all. I look forward to trying it out down the road when it gets up and running.
Now back to Matthew here for a minute. You a winner. There is no doubt about that with your time in Kansas City. Where does Matthew like to celebrate after the game? Is this a local bar? Celebrate with family at home type of guy?
In addition have you scouted out any places in HON to celebrate? What are you hoping for when you reach the islands?
A great question, after a win he likes to celebrate with the team and watch the tape. Watching him and his teammates make the plays that decided the victory put a smile on his face. He’s not a big drinker so he doesn’t tend to go out to bars, but he won’t turn it down if you’re paying.
As for Honolulu, he has yet to really explore much at the islands, but he is very excited to be able to live in such a unique place that most other teams can’t offer. He’s looking forward to the unique food and culture that there is to discover in Honolulu and Hawaii overall.
Man I'll tell you one thing. You are going to love it here. No matter where you end up deciding that celebration place is gonna be, it's 100 times better scene than any other team can offer you. Luckily that's nothing you have to worry about!
I've really enjoyed getting a deep dive into Matthew here. You have any questions for me as his future GM?
I really appreciate you coming out here to interview me, it was good to be able to share some information about myself. I currently don’t have any questions on my mind right now, but I appreciate you asking!
Had a blast with this interview @CyloSaynx. It was a unique being like a scouting convo but getting to know you a bit AFTER being drafted. We are all seriously super pumped to see what you can do as a Hahalua!
