I was blessed with the opportunity to sit down and chat with one of the DSFL's brightest young stars, Rodney Rosadino of the Kansas City Coyotes. Many times throughout the conversation, I was blown away by his grit and determination. What a ferocious young man with an exceptionally bright future in the ISFL.
Dom: Thank you so much for sitting down with me today, Rodney. Your name has been among the most requested by our readers to have an interview, so this should be a well-read column! We just wanted to take some time to get to know you as you continue to light the DSFL on fire. tied for 2nd in tackles, 2nd in tackles for loss, and tied for 1st in fumbles forced and fumbles recovered. It's only been 3 weeks into your rookie season and you're already leading the league in multiple defensive categories. So I guess I'll start with the simple question...how did you get so gosh darn good?
Rodney Rosadino: First off, I want to say thank you for taking the time to interview me. After failing to make an NFL, XFL, USFL, or CFL roster, I decided that I was going to retire from the game of football. Luckily for me, the Coyotes came a knock-in and told me they were going to take a flyer on me for the DSFL draft and that if I played well enough I could secure a roster spot on the next level, the ISFL. I told myself that I had one shot left and to play with no mercy, relentless, and hungry. Ever since I stepped foot in the team facilities I told myself I would choose violence and become a force of nature or be left behind in the dust. Keeping that mindset is what I believe makes me so successful. I've got my sights set on the season record of TFLs for a DSFL seaon.
Dom: Wow! I had no idea you were turned away by so many leagues. Your play on the field speaks for itself: there are no better scouts in any other league than the scouts of the DSFL. You are well on your way to breaking that record. You can even take your foot off the gas for a couple games and still be on pace to break it. I truly believe I am sitting in the presence of a future record-holder.
That sort of mentality is always successful on the field, but sometimes players can have trouble turning it off once they get into their own locker room. How is your relationship with your teammates?
Rodney Rosadino: My relationships are great! I love my teammates and the energy that they bring every day whether it's a practice or a game. I feel truly lucky to have been chosen by KCC and I feel like I owe them everything I have because they took a chance on me. I want to go out every game and give it my all for the team, and my teammates, and ultimately win a 3rd straight Utli. The guys on this team will always be special to me and I hope they feel the same way.
Dom: I've had the pleasure of interviewing several Kansas City players, especially on the defensive side of the ball, and I can assure you that the feeling is mutual. Even though the entire defense is full of 1st round talent, it's obvious that there is a social connection there that gels the defense together to work as a unit. You're no longer playing as 11 individuals, but as one coherent defense. It's obvious to see, even when you look at the stats. Through 4 games, there are 3 KCC defensive players all tied for 2nd in the league in sacks, your own lead of forced fumbles, and 3 of the top 4 tacklers in the league are all KCC players. It's been an exciting defense to behold!
But, to move off of the statistics and get to know you a little better, I wanted to ask you a question or two to get to know you outside of football. So, would you rather have a stomach pocket like a kangaroo or unilateral eyesight like a chameleon?
Rodney Rosadino: unilateral eyesight. could watch receivers and quarterback at the same time and I feel would immensely help my game.
Dom: A-ha! A perfect answer. Many fans underestimate the role that peripheral vision plays in accurately reading and stopping a play, so being able to focus on two areas at once would greatly enhance a defender's ability.
One thing that has been increasingly evident from week to week has been your otherworldly athleticism. Did you play any other sports while you were growing up that helped you become the refined player that you are today?
Rodney Rosadino: Yes, I dabbled in a few other sports. Some were conventional, others not so much. Obviously football, baseball, and basketball, but I had a knack for jai alai, and chess, and even contemplated becoming a professional eater.
Dom: Wow, that is quite a list! Not only in length but in variety, haha. I can see some of each of those sports in your play style: lateral agillity of basketball, knowledge of leverage and arm strength for jai alai, patience of chess, and of course, we can see where your great size comes from through your stint as a professional eater, ha!
Just a couple more questions for you, then I'll let you get back to preparing for your next matchup. Would you rather have only one arm with double the strength you currently have or two extra arms but all four have half the strength you currently have?
Rodney Rosadino: Two Extra arms, grabbing more players for tackles and batting down more passes.
Dom: Exquisite. I think that question really exposes a defender's approach to tackling: safe tackling or hit stick tackling. I think all of the ISFL GMs will want to hear that you have chosen the route of safe tackling.
Many kids around the world are watching what you have been able to accomplish in Kansas City and they are being inspired to want to play on the defensive side of the ball. What would you say to a kid who has aspirations of one day playing in the ISFL?
Rodney Rosadino: you look good, you feel good. you feel good, you play good. you play good, they pay good.
Dom: I love it! haha. A very memorable and accurate phrase.
Well, Rodney, I've very much enjoyed our conversation. You're a pleasant young man with a very bright future. Let's end with this one: What's one thing you want every ISFL GM to know before the draft?
Rodney Rosadino: Don't miss out on a chance at history.
Dom: Exceptional, I love the confidence.
Thank you for your time, Rodney. I’m looking forward to watching the rest of your season!
Rodney Rosadino: Thank you sir! enjoyed it!
