The trade deadline has passed and its time to set our sites on the draft class of S42 way too early. The playoffs haven’t started so we don’t even know the official draft order yet, but I’ve decided to look back at the last 5 DSFL drafts and see if there’s trends we can follow to see who goes where in the draft.
There are 3 positions that are tied for most players right now. RB, WR, and OL all have 5 players so far in the upcoming draft. The next position in LB with 4. Then 2 at CB and 1 at QB, TE, S, and DE. Notably there are no DTs in this draft yet. Now on the stats of the last 5 drafts.
I took a look at just positions drafted in the first round. The most drafted position in the first round is WR, which is not surprising as most teams want 2-3 active WRs and it's a very popular position. The second most taken positions were DT and S, followed by LB and CB. This really shows me that defensive players are highly valued in the DSFL. After considering DE is tied with OL in the 3rd most picked position, we see that defense is drafted in the first round 65% of the time over offense. The most first pick position was CB with 2. Then OL, S, and surprisingly a TE picked 1st overall.
A surprising stat is that 0 RBs have been drafted in the 1st round in the last 5 seasons. And only one QB has been drafted in the 1st. But this draft class (so far) has 5 RBs. Including the top 2 earners as of writing this. So we could see our first RBs drafted in the first this season.
Of course there’s many factors that influence drafting a player. Including possible personal connections to teams or players on the team. This season has been especially close in the standings and even on the final day of the season, the draft order could still change drastically. But I went through rosters of teams and to me the most needed position seemed to be S or CB, with few teams needing some of the most frequent positions in WRs and RBs.
Looking into the past, it looks like you have a very good chance of being picked first if you're a defensive back. Three of the last five first overalls have been in the secondary including the last two drafts. There are 2 CBs in the top 10 earners right now, don’t be surprised to see one of them go 1 overall. Another prediction is that I think a QB will go in the first as well. There’s so many in this draft so far, and two are Receiving Back archetypes which will help with the need all teams have for WR.
If you’re reading this and thinking of what to create for the draft this year. In S40, 3 Defensive Lineman were taken in the 1st round. As of right now, there’s only 1 defensive lineman in this draft (me). I’m going to toot my own horn that statistically, I’ll go in the first round.
