Hello ISFL!
The community engagement team has regained some of its strength as I have re-taken the role of department head and hired some great new community…uhhh…engagers? Still working on a better title, but in the meantime it is completely fine to continue calling us moderators! Please welcome your new discord overlords: @LiathTheSquirrel @18situaseans and returning to the team @TheNC206
So it has been a while since we’ve had a newsletter, and I want to be transparent about what has been going on with the team since I stepped down. I remained as part of the team but unfortunately the head I chose as replacement went IA, and we were stuck in a bit of a purgatory for a while. Me and couple others kept up with moderation duties, but any additional progress towards engagement and improvements halted. I had stepped down due to some life events changing the amount I was able to focus on league stuff, but now that I am able to put more focus on it again I’m stepping back up to the plate! Without further ado, here are our main points of conversation today:
New Discord Rules
With our growing, diverse community, we and HO are in agreement that more concrete rules would be beneficial. This helps us have something specific to point to, and helps the community see more clearly what is and isn't acceptable. Since this is a public facing server that welcomes members from varying ethnicities, genders, sexualities, ages, and cultural backgrounds, we believe that these rules will help make the server a safe and positive environment for all.
It is important to be mindful of the environment we are in when we are in a public facing server. While we all like to joke around and have fun, some jokes cross boundaries and have the potential to make others viewing these jokes uncomfortable. Although we have some friends in this server that we know where the line is, not everybody here knows each other or the relationships we have with one another, especially newer members. We believe that abiding by these rules can help retention of our newer members and can help with our goal of cultivating a safe and positive community for all.
Events
We are excited to announce that we now have a team that is well equipped to run events more often! These may be on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, or as we see the opportunity arise, and will be casual in nature. Some ideas we have on the docket:
Poker night
Among Us
Town of Salem
Online Board games
Tournaments
Gaming streams
One thing we have been talking about with our poker nights would be a buy-in using your own league money to drive up the stakes a bit, so that is something to look forward to! It would likely start with low amounts to simulate the experience with a chance of higher stakes games in the future. We will continue brainstorming ideas and will send announcements ahead of time when we are planning to start an event. If you have any ideas that you'd like to see us try out, please feel free to reach out. Your input is always welcome!
Current Engagement Stats
In June 2022, we revamped the general server with the addition of role selection for more personalized channel options, more channels for more fun conversational topics, and cleansing and re-organization of the current channels to avoid repetition and make the server more palatable for our users. By the numbers, it seems like this was a massive success! Here are the numbers - I pulled activity by message count for each of our main league chat category channels for the entire year prior to the update, and for the year up until April 1st since the update.
General
June 1 2021 - June 1 2022 total message count: 30,547
June 1 2022 - April 1 2023 total message count: 38,908
June 1 2021 - June 1 2022 average messages/month: 2546
June 1 2022 - April 1 2023 average messages/month: 3891
1.52x more active/month
ISFL
June 1 2021 - June 1 2022 total message count: 6160
June 1 2022 - April 1 2023 total message count: 26528
June 1 2021 - June 1 2022 average messages/month: 513
June 1 2022 - April 1 2023 average messages/month: 2653
5.17x more active/month
DSFL
June 1 2021 - June 1 2022 total message count: 2486
June 1 2022 - April 1 2023 total message count: 4441
June 1 2021 - June 1 2022 average messages/month: 207
June 1 2022 - April 1 2023 average messages/month: 444
2.14x more active/month
League chat category total
June 1 2021 - June 1 2022 total message count: 40,927
June 1 2022 - April 1 2023 total message count: 80,001
June 1 2021 - June 1 2022 average messages/month: 3410
June 1 2022 - April 1 2023 average messages/month: 8000
2.34x more active/month
The numbers in just 10 months compared to a full year prior are astounding! We have well over double the amount of activity, and that is just in the league chat category! The most impressive is the burst in activity in the ISFL channel, as its great to see so much more conversations surrounding the league itself. I have also been receiving feedback here and there relaying satisfaction with the improvements made to the server, which is always great to hear. Thank you to the team, HO, and the community in general for making this place the best across all sim leagues!
If you have any comments or questions, please let us know. I appreciate everyone's time in reading this newsletter. The entire community engagement team wishes you all a great day!
