1. Tijuana Luchadores (4-0)
The Tijuana Luchadores have established early on that they are the team to beat this season. They have hit the ground running this season being the last undefeated team in the league with a record of 4-0. So far this season, the offensive unit of this team has been the crowning jewel as it has been far and away the best in the league scoring a league leading 38.2 points per game. Lloyd Bannings has been on an absolute tear this season with an incredibly efficient 12:1 touchdown to interception ratio, which leads the league in ratio and total touchdowns. They have also run the ball very effectively having the second best rushing offense averaging 146 yards per game.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Tijuana Luchadores have also impressed currently boasting the second best defense in the league limiting opposing teams to only 19.5 points per game. Cornerback Synyster Gates deserves much credit as they have started the season red hot leading the league in both PDs and interceptions.
2. Kansas City Coyotes (3-1)
As I predicted before the start of the season. The Kansas City Coyotes have also taken a major step forward with Jake Jefferson in his second year at the helm of the offence. Despite technically being second in the conference having the same record as the Minnesota Grey Ducks, the Coyotes have been far more convincing in their wins having a point differential of +56 compared to the Grey Ducks' differential of -3. Jake Jefferson has improved much since last season passing for 400 more yards and 5 more touchdowns than last season in half the starts while also putting up 217 yards on the ground by himself already. It will be interesting to watch if he can keep his play up.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Kansas City Coyotes have been nothing short of dominant defending both the rush and the pass at an insanely high level. They have limited opposing teams to a league low of 15.2 points per game. Their secondary has continued to play extremely well since last season limiting the pass to the second least amount of yards in the league while having the best rush defense in the league. At this current moment, the Kansas City Coyotes are the team to beat in the North
3. Minnesota Grey Ducks (3-1)
So far, The Minnesota Grey Ducks have been very much akin to what the London Royals were last season. Always in contention to win the conference, yet having a pedestrian point differential despite their respectable record. Much like the Royals last season, the Grey Ducks have no glaring weaknesses, but they also not have any strengths either, which proves to be their glaring weakness. Their offense is fourth in the league scoring 25.8 points per game per game while being fairly average in both passing and rushing metrics.
The defensive unit of the Minnesota Grey Ducks tells a similar story as the offense with the defense proving to be incredibly average as well. They are fourth in the league when it comes to keeping points off the board limiting opposing teams to a pedestrian 26.5 points per game. Currently, the Grey Ducks find themselves at a bit of a crossroads as they are not playing like a championship caliber team, but if they are to improve they could see themselves in the playoffs. Conversely, with their precarious nature, they could find themselves at the bottom in the blink of an eye.
4. Norfolk Seawolves (2-2)
This season, the Norfolk Seawolves have been a watered down version of what they were last year. The offense continues to struggle to put points on the board placing seventh in the league scoring an abysmal 20.2 points per game. Rocky Franklin III has struggled immensely this season passing for 1008 yards but only 4 touchdowns to 5 interceptions. With only 8 total offensive touchdowns, this offense inspires little confidence.
The defensive side of the ball is a similar tale to last season. The defensive unit has played well this season, but not well enough to inspire confidence that they will once again carry their offense to the playoffs. They have limited opposing teams to an average of 21.2 points per game, which is more than respectable.
5. London Royals (2-2)
The London Royals find themselves in a tricky spot early on as they sit third in the conference struggling to find consistency in their play. It has been some time since the Royals have found themselves in the Ultimini. Perhaps their new rookie quarterback Josh Patterson could be the answer these next couple seasons? Josh Patterson has put up a respectable season for a rookie so far as he leads the league in passing yards and holds a respectable 11 to 3 touchdown to interception ratio. He has managed to elevate a struggling team as they place seventh in rushing yards put have managed to score 29 points per game, which puts them at 3rd in the league for points scored. Props to Patterson for leading this unit so early in their career.
On the other side of the ball, the defensive unit has struggled immensely keeping points off the board allowing a seventh in the league average of 31.5 points per game. Unfortunately, this season appears to be a non-contending season for the London Royals, but it appears they have hope for the future with the efficient Josh Patterson at the helm of the offense.
6. Portland Pythons (1-3)
The Portland Pythons were one of the two teams that made it to the Ultimini last season and they have entered this season struggling to fill the holes lost from callups last season. Although they are off the a slow start, it is hard to immediately count this team out as they have Hof quarterback Donovan Winters III leading the team especially considering that they also started last season 1-3 and won the conference. So far this season, the team has struggled immensely on both sides of the ball whether it is untimely turnovers or broken defensive plays. The offense has placed below average at fifth in the league scoring 21.2 points per game struggling to both run and pass the ball.
Looking at the other side of the field, the defensive unit has allowed an average of 30.2 points per game, which puts them at sixth in the league. I feel like this defense has played better than the stats suggest due to untimely turnovers and bad field position although I digress. It will be interesting to see if this team gets red hot once again as they have quite a bit of ground to make up, but they certainly have the experience within this unit to do so.
7. Dallas Birddogs (1-3)
The Dallas Birddogs appear to be set spending yet another year towards the bottom of the list again. This team has struggled from the start losing half of their games by more than two scores and their only win of the season by 1 point. The offense has so far scored an average of 20.5 points per game, which places them at sixth in the league in total points. The Dallas Birddogs seem to still be rebuilding as the stats reflect it. There is very little to inspire joy in the numbers of this team.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Dallas Birddogs are currently fielding the worst defense in the league, who allow an average of 32.2 points per game. Unless this team finds a way to figure out the swiss cheese sized holes in their roster that is present yet again, this is going to be another long season for them.
8. Bondi Beach Buccaneers (0-4)
The Bondi Beach Buccaneers appear to be checking out this year opting for a rebuild, which they have every right to do considering they dominated their way towards an Ultimini and beat the Portland Pythons in a thriller for the trophy. The Buccaneers have little pressure as they can sit back this season and plan their move for the next season. The offense has struggled immensely this season with rookie RE slinging almost as many interceptions as touchdowns with a 5:4 ratio. The offense has averaged a miserable 18.8 points per game, which is neighboring into 2022 Denver Broncos territory.
The defensive unit has played valiantly in this first stretch of the season considering the offense limiting opposing teams to a reasonable 26.5 points per game all while tying the lead for TFLs so far this season. Ultimately, this team does not appear to be in contention, which will allow these players to develop in a low pressure situation.
