I have too much time on my hands and need to get through the next 2.5 hours of work and look busy doing it, so why not slap together a mock draft. Now swoosh has made 3 of these so far and each of them has been increasingly better, not only because I have slowly ascended the ranks but his level of detail and incorporating non rookies into the selection process. Therefore, since this is my v1 draft take it easy on me. All my analysis is going to be based on a cursory review of the tpe tracker for each team and I won't be considering position switches. Additionally, I am only going to mock the first round as of right now. It is 4:34 pm and I have spent enough time working on this for the time being. Potentially I will write up another one as we get closer to draft time and the hype starts setting in. If anyone wants to collaborate please let me know!
Let's take a quick look at each teams current state and what positions that may be looking to fill out from this draft class. As astutely pointed out in the most recent Pumpin Hands podcast the depth charts in terms of TPE earners aren't very deep so I imagine there will be a good number of high earners getting drafted and then being asked to swap positions.
First up is NOLA, mostly because they will have so many picks (4 in the first round and 2 more in the second). NOLA is in an interesting position where they need anything and everything. They went scorched earth trading away skill position players for first and second round picks. It would honestly be a shorter list to identify the positions that NOLA doesn't need, but that is fewer words and I need to get paid (DSFL week 8 burned me pretty good). NOLA has a desperate need for a new running back. Currently NOLA has 3 but one is deep into regression, and another is IA with 100 TPE only. A fresh running back will easily see play in season 42. Next up for NOLA would be some offensive lineman to protect their quarterback. With only 2 offensive linemen, who by they way are in regression, there is soon to be no help and a budget issue for the Second Line if they can’t get some fresh bodies on the line. Speaking of NOLA’s quarterback he is regressing too! He is still in a strong position but it would be in NOLA’s best interest to pick up a quarterback now that is active and can start to earn a lot of TPE while their current qb regresses towards retirement. The last position I will touch on is safety. Currently NOLA has three safeties and two are regressing and the third with 240 TPE is IA. Depending on regression numbers a s42 rookie may be starting day one at safety for NOLA.
Second up is Berlin, who are the reigning defensive kings but the offensive jesters. BER hasn’t able to do much when in possession of the ball this season which is somewhat surprising given the look of their roster. The glaring gap for BER is their offensive line. 2 real players, one regressing into the ground and the other IA. I see Berlin taking an offensive lineman as soon as they can.
Next comes Baltimore. Baltimore desperately needs an RB#2 given the regression of their current one. I suspect BALs first pick to either be a RB or someone willing to position swap to it. After that BAL will probably try to pickup an offensive linemen or defensive end to help beef up the current squad. Unfortunately BAL has traded away their first pick to NOLA and will be coming in for the RB scraps in the second round.
In fourth place comes NYS which, as you will see shortly, has a big need for a second tight end. Currently there are two on the roster but one is IA and the other is barely earning, literally only buying the 3 TPE training option each week. Likely the first pick will be a tight end that will start in S42. Following that NYS definitely needs a Defensive End currently only having one on the roster.
COL comes up next and is another team that is in the running for “Most likely to draft a RB as soon as they can”. Adding an additional RB will allow the Yeti to balance out their offense a bit more and not be as predictable on the field. Other than that the yeti appear to be in an alright position.
What does AUS need right now? Definitely a Linebacker. Two of their four current LBs are regressing and this will open up a spot shortly for a s42 rookie. It is likely that the LB will be sitting in the DSFL though for at least one season. Pending that AUS looks pretty solid overall and doesn’t have any glaring issues.
SJS is on the lookout for a wide receiver and offensive line (who isn’t at this point). I suspect the WR will come first since there are only a few good ones available from this rookie class after that expect to see SJS grab whatever OL is remaining even if just to save money from OL bots.
Chicago is another team that has a huge OL problem and will grab one very early on if not first. The rest of the roster is in a good place though and will probably grab any high tpe earners that are flexible.
SAR needs to grab a new RB that they can keep in the wings. Another team though that isn’t overly lacking, I am starting to see a pattern, but needs a few seasons of earning for them to reach a peak.
Arizona looks like they are lacking the most in defense and may be taking a safety in the first round. Currently they only have two on the roster and one is deep into regression. I expect to see AZ take a linebacker early on as well. Though they traded away their first round pick to NOLA as well so they may just be fighting for scraps.
OCO just another team with OL problems and not much else. Again I see them taking OL or someone willing to swap positions. Not much else to fix here.
YKW have two great running backs at the moment that have been tearing it up on the receiver side as well. However there is still a need for a new Wide Receiver here at Yellow Knife. The WR will need to put their reps in though and may see another season in the DSFL.
CTC, well this one doesn’t matter since they don’t have a pick until the 5th round. CTC coming out of here with just scraps.
HON has 2 running backs on the roster but really only utilize one because the other isn’t so hot. So a fresh RB to flush out the roster will be a big pick. Not much else is missing from this team at the moment which is why I see them winning the whole dang thing.
The pick order is based on current pick trades and my own personal projection of season end standings.
ROUND 1
Pick 1 NOLA - @swoosh aka Dino Nuggets - CB
Determining first overall pick is a real strange one this season as NOLA has four total first round picks and a butt load of needs. IMO Dino Nuggets is the #1 rookie in the league right now, he may not be the #1 tpe leader but that handicap isn't real. The real power of Dino Nuggets is his activity level. He is very active in our community, on forums and discord. But lord, have you seen this man's bank account? He is absolutely stacked. NOLA currently has 4 CBs on their roster with one heavily regressing and another one that is IA. DINO would likely be competing for slot number 3 before s42 even starts and potentially slot 2 depending on how hard Harper gets hit with regression. Nuggets has shown his dedication to the league and that kind of power in fresh rookie could help support the team for seasons to come. Would be interesting to see what his contract looks like. If I were NOLA i'd try to wrap him up for 3 or more seasons.
Pick 2 BER - @Muford aka Blacksmith Andre - OL
BER has the certified best defense in the ISFL right now so opting for a player on the opposite side of the ball seems like the best choice. Looking at BER offensive line up it seems odd that their offense has fallen so flat this season. The biggest glaring issue is the weak offensive line. BERs top ol is so deep in regression, down 700+ TPE. Shoring up the offensive line will give BERs young but potent offensive package the ability to make plays. Andre is likely to get pulled up right away and see playtime. There are so more pieces of the puzzle that need to come together for Berlin, but no doubt Andre could forge a long term spot for himself for the fire salamanders.
Pick 3 NOLA (BAL 1st round pick) - @shrub02 aka Reginald Shrubbery - RB
Reginald Shrubbery is a recreate with a proven history of being a strong earner, currently sitting at 224 TPE the top of all s42 rookies. NOLA, again full of holes currently, has another glaring one at Running Back. With a total of 3 running backs, 2 of which are IA and one is regressing into retirement soon, NOLA will want to pick up a young guy to come in and take over the position within the next season or 2. Already beating out RB #3 there is a good chance Reggie would come in fighting for RB#2 by the time he finishes earning in the off season. If so expect to see Reginald tearing it up in the ISFL come gameday. I think it is a huge toss up between Dino Nuggets and Shrubbery, but I give Dino Nuggets the edge just because of the potential of him becoming a generational player for NOLA.
Pick 4 NYS - Chicken Lips aka Hank Mardukas- TE
This one was tough. I could see this going two ways. NYS have one IA Tight End and 1 who is not earning so well. By the time s42 starts Hank could easily be competing for the starting tight end position. The other option I cam up with would be NYS opting to beef up their offensive line. Currently there are 2 active and earning OL players for NYS but a third would be a great asset to protect Falco the young quarterback. I opted for chosing a tight end here because Mardukas can assist getting the ball downfield as well as provide a little bit of blocking support. Currently Hank is the top earning Tight End rookie and the host of the electric and captivating Dot Thoughts podcast. From my point of view NYS doesn't need much bolstering of the defense, they have a pretty fleshed out presence the players just need some more time to earn tpe. In 2 seasons or so I could see NYS being very scary.
Pick 5 COL - @firstfray aka Heiiajs D. Owidhuse - RB
COL has been very pass heavy this season, making their offensive strategy broadcasted for their opponents. The Yeti only 2 Running Backs with one being from s33, Marvin Toledo. Marvin has regressed from a peak 366 tpe all the way down to a measely 220. Owidhuse would start day one as RB#2 and easily be set to take over in several seasons. This would help COL balance their offense and keep their ooponents guessing. Suprising to see such a top earner fall all the way to the 5th spot, but positionally it makes sense to me.
Pick 6 AUS - @MN_Moosey aka Frederico Americano - LB
AUS doesn't have any glaring weaknesses in my eyes. They are a solid team with some positions held by relatively newer players, the only solution for that is time, so that they can earn TPE. The one dark spot on the AUS roster is linebackers. Two of their four have begun regression which would make room for a new LB with a season or two. If AUS goes with this pick I see Frederico staying down in the DSFL while they continue to earn, waiting for the phone to ring.
Pick 7 SJS - @oilmandan aka Stetson David - WR
Another case of regression killing off part of a team. Two of SJSs three wide receivers are deep into regression with WR#3 likely to fall to around 200 by s42. David a top earner in the class would be ripe for starting at WR#3 and perhaps taking over WR#2 by S43 depending on a combination of factors. SJS has a glaring OL problem as well, but I feel that can be handled later in the draft.
Pick 8 - CHI - @sburbine aka Dan Dandrews - OL
CHI has a very young team for the most part and has a massive gap at OL. Dandrews is the second from the top Offensive Lineman of the s42 class, falling just behind Andre Blacksmith. Proven to be a good earner Dandrews will help provided so much needed time to CHI Quarterback Painted Penguin. Similar to my take on NYS with a few more seasons to keep earning CHI will be a force to be reckoned with.
Pick 9 - SAR - @DangWookie aka Ace Anderson
SAR has two big pitfalls right now. The RB#2 is already on par with Ace Anderson in terms of TPE, so if Ace keeps earning at the same pace he will easily overtake and become a starting player. The second issue is SARs again secondary, with both safeties in the middle of regression. It was a toss up between the two positions, but at this point in the draft there aren't as many RBs remaining as there are safeties. SAR has shown they have a potent offense so giving them even more options just feels extra potent.
Pick 10 - NOLA (ARI first round pick) - @WALDO aka Bread Bowl - TE
NOLA is in desperate need of a tight end, with their current Tight End sitting at 305 TPE and being IA since November. This pick may be hard to understand as Bread Bowl is only at 145 TPE but he was a late create by a previous user. Waldo knows what he is doing and is gaining tpe at lightning speeds. Originally I would have picked Suave Cruz here but he is seemingly gone IA, if he comes back before the season is over and starts earning again I could see this pick being a toss up. Also worth noting is NOLA could totally opt for a high TPE recruit here and opt for a position change, that would add too many layers to this for me to manage.
Pick 11 - OCO - @tstols aka Brock Lesnar - OL
To me it seems like OCO would benefit the most from an additional Offensive Lineman here. Currently with only one on the roster it would free up so capital hiring a human player versus a bot. OCO has been running the ball a lot this season, 4 Running Backs on the roster, so having a stronger OL to create space would go a long way in getting those extra yards. Brock is perhaps the last strong OL rookie in the draft, so other teams may be scrambling to fill spots.
Pick 12 - YKW - @Frostbite aka Keanu Calhoun - WR
YKW is in an interesting place where the entire offense is at the peak of their careers and the defense is just a bunch of spring chickens. YKW may opt to start drafting the future of the offense here so that once regression starts taking over they have someone in waiting. For that reason I have the YKW taking Calhoun here. YKW WR#2 is midway through regression but still has a season or two where he could play allowing Calhoun to stay down in the DSFL and earn lumps of TPE and be ready to take over the position once regression comes knocking. Calhoun is the second to top WR in the rookie class, right behind Stetson David and is a top earner. He could become a staple in the YKW offense by s44-45.
Pick 13 - NOLA, again (CTC first round pick) - @Aleris aka RE #38
RE #38 could be NOLAs qb of the future. Though based on conversations with him I know he is open to swapping positions so he will likely swap and go much earlier in the draft. If he were to stick at QB here he would probably stay down in the DSFL for several seasons as NOLAs qb ages out. The only reason #38 here edges out Josh Patterson is a 7 tpe difference, likely due to RE#38 being a recreate and having slightly more opportunity to gain TPE. Though if RE gets drafted earlier for a position swap this is Josh's spot 100%. For now that is probably enough offense for NOLA and I see them drafting defensive players in round 2.
Pick 14 - HON (Yes they win the Ultimus, the script leaked already) - @Martin.Bachman aka Martin Bachman - RB
Bean Delphine Jr. is a monster and a crucial part of HONs offense right now. Unfortunately, no one knows who HONs RB#2 is because they almost never touch the ball. The current RB#2 hasn't been a strong earner and Bachman here could easily overtake them with 2 seasons. Bachman is on par with Ace Anderson is only behind by a handful of TPE. Based on HONs current play style I could see Bachman riding out 1 more season in the DSFL then hitting the pros.
That is a wrap on Round 1 of the Season 42 ISFL Draft. I can't wait for the actual day, it is going to be so much fun. Any rookies that didn't make it in the Round 1 selection I apologize, I know nothing about football other than I like to see the number next to the teams go up. Stats mean nothing to me and team compositions are a myth. If you have any comments let me know, especially who you think got snubbed, I already have a short list of people I am surprised aren't on here. To @TheRake and @toofpete who were hating on the S42 class on their most recent podcast I just want to say we may not have the TPE depth but we have more heart than S41 could even comprehend!
Let's take a quick look at each teams current state and what positions that may be looking to fill out from this draft class.
