1.(+1) Kansas City Coyotes (8-2)
The Kansas City Coyotes have continued their dominance since week 4 going 5-1 since the last time each team was objectively ranked by yours truly. The best home team in the league at 5-0 continue to play incredibly well with their leader Jake Jefferson throwing approximately 1300 yards and 9 more touchdowns in this second stretch of the season. Overall, the offense has regressed throughout the season falling to fourth in the league in points scored per game at a fair 26.1 points. Despite this, they have climbed their way to the top of the food chain establishing themselves as the team to beat towards this final third of the DSFL season.
On the defensive side of the ball, they have continued to excel at silencing opposing offenses fielding the best defense in the league. This unit has stepped up when the offense struggled and needed them most like in weeks 6 and 7 where the offense only scored 12 and 20 points, but the defense carried the team to victory limiting the Birddogs and Luchadores to 7 and 6 points, which is about as clutch as it gets for an elite defense. This unit is legit and here to contend. All they have to do is hang on for a couple more games in their competitive conference.
2. (-1) Tijuana Luchadores (7-2-1)
The Tijuana Luchadores have also been dominant in their division as well, but it could be argued that they reside in a much softer division compared to the tighter race in the North. Despite that, they have continued to impress and and statistically could be argued either way between the Luchadores and the Coyotes for the best team in the league right now. The offense has continued to fire on all cylinders despite a slight regress averaging 29.5 points per game, which puts them second in the league in scoring. Unfortunately, Bannings has taken a major step back in terms of efficiency going from a 12:1 touchdown interception ratio to a 8:9 in the last six games, which is something to keep a watchful eye going forward on despite the continued team success.
The defensive unit has also played to an elite caliber limiting opposing teams to an average of 20.3 points per game, which puts them at second in the league overall. This defense has been excellent not due to them being elite in any one area, but being versatile and limiting teams' production both on the ground and through the air placing third in the league defending both areas. The Luchadores have seemingly built a team ready to contend with the best of them while having the fortune of doing so in a soft conference.
3. (+2) London Royals (6-4)
The London Royals have perused through this second stretch of the season confidently going a more than respectable 4-2 the last six games. Patterson has continued to light up the scoreboard with his play and further improving his game throwing 22 more touchdowns to only 5 more interceptions, which puts him at 33:8 on the season so far. He is currently the best QB in the league with his play right now and it shows as he leads the top scoring offense in the league scoring a ridiculous average of 30.8 points per game. Patterson has also gotten support as the rushing game has also taken a major step forward going from seventh in the league to fourth averaging a solid 11.5 yards per game. Bachman has been quietly having a solid season down the stretch currently third in total yards at 814, but averaging the most per carry at 5.1 yards.
The main hang up of this team has been the defensive unit, which is currently averaging 26.5 points allowed per game, which places them at fifth in the league in points. They are also seventh in the league in yards allowed with an average of 424 total yards allowed per game, which is cause for concern as one cannot expect the offense to continue playing the way they are when they face higher end defenses, especially in the playoffs. Regardless of this, the London Royals find themselves currently in playoff seedings, but should not be allowed to feel too comfortable as the northern conference race is tight as both the Ducks and the Pythons have shots to steal it from them.
4. (+2) Portland Pythons (5-5)
Nothing has been easy for the Portland Pythons this season as they started off slow once again but have slithered their way back into contention for the playoffs. Despite being one of the leading teams in terms of TPE at the start of the season, the numbers were not tipping in their favor. Since then, they have gone 4-2 as the numbers have started to work in their favor. The statistics on paper have been ugly on both sides of the ball, but the team's chemistry, construction, and winning culture has kept the team together and in contention. The offense has been turnover-heavy and low-scoring averaging only 19.7 points per game. Winters III has tightened up and remained poised during this stretch of the season opting for a more efficient approach to his game in favor of letting the running game do the scoring. Although the rushing unit of this team places seventh in the league for total yards averaging 102.3 yards per game, Eldroh Kove has accounted for 1022 of the entire team's 1023 positive rushing yards as the DSFL rushing leader. The Pythons better be paying for his vacation this offseason no matter what happens.
The defensive side of the ball of the Portland Pythons has a lot of talent that shows up every game, which is shown by them leading the league in PDs at 62 (5 more than second), forced fumbles at 15, and even sacks at 33 (7 more than second) but have allowed some ugly numbers to grace viewers' eyes in both stretches of the season. The week 8 collapse to the Grey Ducks was an unbridled disaster with the offense committing three consecutive turnovers within their own 30, while the defense seemingly could not stop anything the Ducks offense did. Besides that disaster, the defense places seventh in the league allowing 27.9 points per game. In this final stretch of the season, this unit will need to prove whether they are a talented victim of circumstance, or else they will fall under the label of a fluky middling team as they make one last playoff push with Winters III.
5. (+3) Bondi Beach Buccaneers (4-6)
The Bondi Beach Buccaneers have shown signs of life and have even managed to drunkenly stumble into a playoff spot. More rum for everyone! Although it is more than applaudable to climb back up the ranks from a 0-4 record to a 4-6 record to be in the playoff seeding, it more shows the disparity in skill between the North and South conference as a 4-6 record would put your team at the bottom of the northern conference. That being said, the Buccaneers have been playing some excellent football these last six week as their offense has made huge strides of improvement adding around 7 points to their offensive average. The poster child of this progress is RE, who has thrown 12 touchdowns since we last checked in on them, which is more than double what they had before.
The defensive unit of the Buccaneers has been solidly middle of the pack as well allowing only 24.2 points per game, which puts them at fourth in the league in points allowed. The main area that this unit can improve in to put them over the edge and possibly be a more serious contender down the stretch would be to force more turnovers in the secondary, which is an area where they have been lacking in thus far with only 6 interceptions. For now though, it is simply good vibes and a feel good story of a rebuilding team doing surprisingly well.
6. (-3) Minnesota Grey Ducks (4-6)
Unfortunately, the Minnesota Grey Ducks have squandered a nice start of 3-1 by only going 1-5 in the last six games leaving them to plummet to the bottom of the northern conference. Although they could certainly still sneak into the playoffs with some luck, their recent play does not inspire much confidence for them to do so. Outside of their outlier game against the Portland Pythons with likely the biggest blowout of the season winning 62-9, the team as a whole has done much that pops off the screen being fairly average to below average in most areas. The offensive unit of the team has been solid averaging 26.8 points per game (although this is likely significantly skewed by scoring 62 points in one game), which has been just enough to keep their point differential to be fairly neutral at -1. The rookie quarterback Zisia Ojeisndiwoseodj has been having a solid first outing this season throwing for 2901 yards and 36 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. Although they will likely not see the playoffs this season, it will be interesting to see if they can get it done in the future.
The defensive side of the ball are where most of the struggles for this team lie where they have been struggling the most. Weirdly, they do fairly well from preventing opposing offenses from racking a ton of yards both through the air and on the ground placing fifth defending the rush and second defending the pass, but they place sixth in points allowed with an average of 26.9 points allowed per game (.1 more than points scored). It seems that they do well at limiting their production, but once the opposing offense gets in groove, they struggle to stop them as they approach their side of the field. Hopefully we can see this team contending in future seasons with their new rookie qb showing flashes of what could be.
7.(-3) Norfolk Seawolves (4-6)
The Norfolk Seawolves have simply continued down the road they were already heading and are now facing the fruits of their labor. They have continued to struggle on the offensive side of the ball more than any other team in the league while forcing their defense to carry the load much like last season, but with much less success compared to the previous season. The offense places firmly last in the league averaging 18.5 points per game having low yardage both through the air and on the ground. Rocky Franklin III has continued to struggle this season averaging 1 touchdown a game to 0.8 interceptions a game, which puts him at 10:8 on the season.
The defensive unit of the Norfolk Seawolves continues to do their thing and continue what they were doing last season (besides winning of course). The defense has pretty much done all they can to give the offense chances to win the game only allowing 23.5 points per game, which places them at third in the league. Looking towards these last 4 games and the offseason, the Seawolves are going to have to consider how they can rework the offense while retaining the structure they have on defense in order to prevent a full on tank.
8. (-1) Dallas Birddogs (1-8-1)
There is not a whole lot to say about the Dallas Birddogs that the numbers do not already say for themselves. They are far and away the worst team in the league having already been eliminated from the playoffs. While other teams got cooking with some wins at some point this season, the Birddogs never really had a point where they got anything going and their season will likely end with their only highlight being that they embarassed their rival, the luchadores in a tie game. Their offense is seventh in the league scoring an abysmal 19 points per game despite Wolfie McDummy Jr. putting up some fairly respectable and efficient numbers with 17 passing touchdowns to only 6 interceptions. The problem is that they do not have a running game to compliment this game manager type play style being firmly last in the league in rushing yards.
The defensive unit of the team has been even worse than the offense has allowing 30.4 points per game, which puts them at the bottom of the list in their ability to keep points off the board. They are the worst in the league in both defending the rush and the pass; there is simply nothing to salvage or anything good say about this defense unfortunately. The only hope the Dallas Birddogs have this next season is to hit on some special players after this tank in hopes of beginning to rebuild this team as they pretty much have the first overall pick sealed nicely and tied with a pretty little bow.
