@ItsFrenchie is a beast, gonna run this league.
I will start this off by saying that this was written the intention of intriguing self-reflection for people in the positions of power. but now I just need 300k to pay for season equipment and I am on vacation and do not want to type something new up. Keep in mind this comes from a while ago while I had my player Stumpy Jones with one foot out of the league so tree references and all that other nonsense is lost and not really relevant and this is completely unrefined.
I have generally taken a very passive approach to this league through everything but as I am an old ancient tree I have seen quite a few things across my times and feel I must voice what I see. First, I want to shout out ReverendOReily (originally had him pinged but it's so far removed I didn't want to cause a stir as at this point I just want the $$$) and all of the YellowKnife Wraiths you have had a hell of a season and deserve the success that you all have achieved together. --I really suggest that you and yellow knife players all stop reading here as the rest is not intended for you and it may make you feel negative things (which is not the intent)--.
I will start off with that this is the topic of MVP award or Most Valuable Player award, not the Best player on the Best team award or player with the most yards or reps (those would fall into the Most outstanding player award, it is the entire reason Most Outstanding player was created in the recent future.) Every season that I do a podcast toward the end of the season or during 2x or whatever I generally list my three MVP candidates, it is on a trash tier podcast so I do not expect anyone to actually listen to it but in my thought process there are really only 4 potential positions that can yield an MVP candidate. Those are Quarterback, Running Back, potentially wide receiver and maybe a defensive position. Even though In the current sim era there has not been any defensive players to win the MVP but I still list them... Most seasons I could see maybe 4-5 players receive votes and it has been a good way to predict who will win the MVP award through the league.
This season was different. The winner of the award Kumquat Archipelago won the MVP this season with stats that were actually worse than a player of S38 who actually did not receive any votes for MVP last season. This season Archipelago had 2056 total yards, 22 touchdowns on 373 touches with 0 fumbles. I was not going to argue that Kumquat Archipelago had a very similar season to The Stig last season. The Stig received 0 votes for MVP last season. What were The Stigs stats last season. The Stig had 2074 yards from scrimmage, 19 TDs from scrimmage, on 360 touches. The Stig did also return kick offs yielding an additional 646 yards and one of four players in the league with a kick return touchdown bringing The Stigs total yards to 2720 and total touch downs to 20 and 0 fumbles as well.
I hear all the time that a great measure of the most valuable player is to replace their stats with the average of the league how does this impact the overall teams record or performance. If you were to take it one step further and replace the Archipelago's stats with zero production you may be surprised at the result. Even though this is not a reasonable way to evaluate most valuable player it displays how poor and lazy this season's MVP decision was. You would think that for the most valuable player the change in overall record for the team would be extremely significant, it would likely change the team's record from winning the league to missing the playoffs. However, that is nothing close to what happens with this season's most valuable player. If you were to evaluate the games and completely remove Archipelago's contributions to the games, the wraiths are still at least a minimum of 11-5. with only two games being affected. One of them is Game 5 against the Sarasota Sailfish where the wraiths win by 3 points and the other game is a potentially impactful game against NOLA in week 13. One could argue that where Kumquat Archipelago's contribution is with clock management and securing victories. This was not the case for the games. Kumquat's impact was more hypothetical and overblown.
I do not think anyone would have been mad if any player from the yellow knife defense ended up winning MVP or hell even the entire Defense would have been a better result. It may have opened up a can of worms for future votes but at least the award would be properly represented compared to this result.
I suppose it is not very fair to compare two people for Most Valuable Player in isolation for running backs. Maybe someone balled out at a different position in season 39 and hard carried their team to success on their own where if they were replaced with the average player, the team would have been a dumpster fire. Let us see who ended up receiving votes for MVP that yielded the Stig zero Most Valuable Player votes.
The three people who I had who should receive votes for MVP were QB: Carter Knight or Wendall sailor (but bulk stats are dumb lmao /s), RB: The Stig or The Yellow Knife Defense. The easiest way to explain the reason why votes happened they way they did I cannot emphasis this enough because people voting for best player on the best team is the only potential thing that I can see as a reason for voting in the manner that has happened which is just disingenuous to Most Valuable Player Award and is a bad look for the league.
I would love to hear the logic for how voting turned out the way it did however the inconsistencies between the past two seasons is hard to deny. A start would be HO recuse itself from voting for MVP considering because by consistency of voting you either screwed over TheStig, Knight/Sailor in voting for MVP and it actually screwed all of them and their legacy. I would also suggest to start voting for a player for most valuable player as that. If you were to replace them with the average player would their team still perform the way they did. Otherwise you might as well rename the Most Valuable Player Award to the "Good player on gooder team award".
This awards process in extremely important as it is a primary reason for why we play this league. As a player who was an offensive linemen getting ready to recreate, it severely lessened my want to create as a key positional player (QB, RB). But the worst thing is that it does not make me feel like there is a place for players on the "lower tier" teams to have a chance at awards especially with the elimination of positional awards.
