As we move into the latter of our two drafts, I thought it'd be fun to take a look back at the last DSFL draft and where our ISFL first rounders were taken. I'm hoping this can serve as proof that DSFL draft position doesn't have any bearing on where you go in the ISFL, and that draft postion actually doesn't mean very much at all for the kind of career a player will have.
#1. Thomas Sutha - lemonoppy
DSFL Draft Position: 1.04
Overall Movement: +3
No surprise that the Most Dedicated Member goes 1 OA, and no further surprise that it was mostly figured out from the beginning that he'd be a great user. There was some debate whether he'd go at 1 OA since Arizona wasn't a WR-hungry team, but a potential position switch on the horizon means that Arizona gets a great user at a position of need. A great jump for lemonoppy!
#2. Jay Cue III - Opera_Phantom
DSFL Draft Position: 2.11
Overall Movement: +9
Recreates don't usually go very highly in the DSFL draft. Typically new users will get the nod for a multitude of reasons. That doesn't apply as much to the ISFL, where making competitive choices could make or break a team. This seems like a "make" choice, as Austin traded up to grab their QB of the future in an established user and makes them one of the bigger positive movers in the class!
#3. Wing Gundam - Ctots
DSFL Draft Position: 1.03
Overall Movement: +0
Surprisingly, Ctots goes exactly where he was taken in the DSFL draft. I honestly didn't expect to find somebody who swept their draft position. It's a great pick by Sarasota to grab a high earning player-- in my estimation the cream of the DL crop going into the draft.
#4. Sack Sparrow - Water
DSFL Draft Position: 1.06
Overall Movement: +2
Another pretty close pick, Water is one of those guys who you can rely on. A general manager in another sim league, Sack Sparrow arrives in Berlin to bolster the Fire Salamander defense.
#5. Gaius Gleel - Crodyman
DSFL Draft Position: 2.15
Overall Movement: +10
Similar to Opera_Phantom, Crodyman is a top recreate who fell in the DSFL draft because of new create preference. Teams seemed eager to grab LB help, so Berlin wisely uses their 2nd pick to grab one of those top tier linebackers.
#6. Ignatious Cleetington - 110radio
DSFL Draft Position: 1.08
Overall Movement: +2
Although he goes by a new name on the forum, radio is still one of the best new creates of the class. TE seem to not be in high demand though, as I honestly expected him to go top 5. The openness to a position change worked in his favor however, as Cleet goes at #6 and plans on using that route running speed to zoom past offensive linemen as a LB.
#7. Dylan Duma - honey
DSFL Draft Position: 1.05
Overall Movement: -2
Our first faller, though not by too much. Perhaps another victim of the low need for TE, Colorado trades into the first round to grab another of the top new creates. The Yeti love their tight ends, but a potential position swap might make Duma a dangerous player in the coming seasons wherever they end up playing.
#8. Kyle Bessey - Pokecraft
DSFL Draft Position: 3.24
Overall Movement: +16
The biggest mover of the draft! Pokecraft is a new user to the ISFL and somebody who didn't let a late 3rd round choice get them down. They made their mark on the class, becoming one of the best running back options come the ISFL draft and getting votes for MDM. It's not where you get picked that matters, it's what you do after it. Pokecraft is the shining example of that so far in this draft.
#9. Spruce Willis - FootballIsCool
DSFL Draft Position: 3.21
Overall Movement: +12
A recreate and one of the better available safeties in the class, Willis finds a great landing spot in Sarasota. The Center Field arch means we're likely to see him take the Sailfish Free Safety position in the seasons to come.
#10. Crasher Wake - ZodiacEXE
DSFL Draft Position: 1.01
Overall Movement: -9
It's not where you get picked, it's what you do after that counts. I do feel like some of my decisions caused me to rightfully fall to here in the draft. It does kind of stink to fall this far from my DSFL position, but the Copperheads are a great, welcoming squad. Really that's all that matters. And hey, the mantra works just as well for the ISFL as it does for the DSFL.
#11. Cheecago Boucher - UberBJ
DSFL Draft Position: 3.20
Overall Movement: +9
Another big recreate mover, this time a tongue-in-cheek name that harps on a contentious point in the league. Not here to talk about that though, so I'll just enjoy the irony of Boucher going to the Wraiths.
#12. Josh Gibson - DoubleDub
DSFL Draft Position: 1.07
Overall Movement: -5
My other half in management for a different league becomes our third faller. He entered the league expecting to mid-earn, but has shown the capability to earn well and with a healthy head start due to creating at the trade deadline. Gibson tracks to be a long term contributor in New Orleans as their rebuild looks to bear fruit soon.
#13. Bubba Hog - IHateBobNutting
DSFL Draft Position: N/A (Waiver Claim)
Overall Movement: N/A
And even if you join late you can make your way into the first round. It helps that BobNutting is a recreate that teams know what to expect from, but I don't see any reason why a new waiver claim couldn't make their way into the first round. NOLA gets a great pair of defenders here.
#14. Iman Outlaw - AllBetsOnJames
DSFL Draft Position: 2.16
Overall Movement: +2
There was some debate over which pick Arizona would use for this player, whose name is less tongue-in-cheek than Boucher's. In the end, it was a pick that was reasonably close to his draft position in the DSFL. Jimbo's an established user in multiple sim leagues, so it makes complete sense to grab him here.
And that's the first round! Plenty of movers both up and down, a mix of recreates moving to reasonable upper level positions and new creates both over and under performing their original positions. At the end of the day though, when you get drafted doesn't necessarily matter. A mid-round pick could one day be in the hall of fame! I'm looking forward to seeing where everybody ends up later today and even more excited to see how these careers shape up!
