Season 44's regular season is almost upon us and the preseason has concluded after each DSFL team has played 4 games each in preparation for the season to fight for the elusive Ultimini trophy that many are chasing at the game's development level.
For many players, it is about starting off a career on a right note, learning the playbooks and making an impression on the fans and coaches. For Dawelle Wevis, it is just another step towards greatness and just the start of the journey of what he hopes to be a hall of fame type career when he decides to hang up the cleats.
For the Kansas City Coyotes, the hope is to improve on what they did last season where they finished in a playoff position but at 5-8-1 on the season, it was more about the competition than anything. The team hopes to compete again for the playoffs but with a legit shot at the championship and they started that journey by selecting Wevis 5th overall in this year's DSFL draft to bolster and anchor their pass defense. The team definitely looked to focus on defensive help in the draft and hopes to build a strong unit there in preparation for a successful season.
Preseason Week One
Kansas City - 13
London - 23
The Coyotes lost to London by 10 points but overall the pass defense was solid in the first showing for the Coyotes.
The Coyotes held London's 2 quarterbacks to a combined 62.2 passer rating, picking him off 3 times as well as sacking him 3 times as well.
Wevis for his part had a stat line of 4 tackles, 3 pass defenses, 1 interception. A solid showing for the rookie in his first professional game.
Preseason Week Two
Portland - 23
Kansas City - 20
Another loss, this time in a closer affair at home. The Coyotes' pass defense struggled a bit more on the day.
Facing DSFL star Jay Cue III, the team was certainly up against a big task. They gave up a passer rating of 102.4 but did have 2 interceptions and 3 sacks on the day at least. The 74.29% completion percentage and 8.09 yards per attempt along with 283 yards and 3 touchdowns though were a bit too much to allow on the day.
Wevis struggled a bit on the day, not recording any pass defenses on the day and finished with a stat line of just 5 tackles for the game.
His total preseason stats are now 9 tackles, 3 pass defenses, and 1 interception.
Preseason Week Three
Kansas City - 9
Minnesota - 30
This game was a blowout unfortunately for the Coyotes as the Grey Ducks had their number on the day. The pass defense had mixed results on the day stat wise.
The Coyotes' pass defense gave up a passer rating of 90.1 but had 1 interception and sacked the QB 5 times while just allowing 1 passing touchdown as well. However, a 60% completion percentage, 294 yards and a yards per attempt of 9.8 was a bit concerning on the day.
Wevis for his part had a decent day in pass defense with a stat line of 3 tackles and 3 pass defenses.
So far, he is now up to 12 tackles, 6 pass defenses, and his 1 interception for the preseason.
Preseason Week Four
Norfolk - 17
Kansas City - 52
A win in the final game of the preseason and a big win at that. The pass defense was decent on the day as well helping lead the charge for the win.
A 81.7 rating against is tolerable and the team picked off Norfolk 2 times while registering 6 sacks as well. 7.11 yards per attempt and 64.44% completions with 320 yards again are concerning but it did not hurt them too much overall. Norfolk had to throw a lot with the blowout win and the team did enough to stop them.
Wevis overall had a pretty impressive game stat wise with 10 tackles, 3 pass defenses, and a forced fumble and recovery. It is currently unknown how many tackles Wevis was helping out on versus ones where he allowed a catch. Viewing the play by play, there was a 55-yard completion he made a tackle on so maybe he was roasted once but overall other catches were around 6-8 yards.
His final preseason stats come to 22 tackles, 9 pass defenses, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery!
Conclusion
Overall the 1-3 record is not great but it is preseason so the wins and losses don't matter in the end.
The team's pass defense overall was okay but needs to improve. 82.4 passer rating against which is okay, not great but not bad. 17 sacks, 8 interceptions in 4 games is pretty nice. 62.58% completion percentage against and a 7.78 yards per attempt a bit rough but overall, could be worse.
The 22 tackles, 9 pass defenses, 1 interception, and the forced fumble with recovery set up Wevis well for his future.
Dragging that across a 14 game season would yield 77 tackles, 31.5 pass defenses, 3.5 interceptions and forced fumbles. This would be an incredible season for the first year pro so it will be interesting if he can keep that pace as the games become real. The hope is to even improve upon those and really show up in his rookie season with more pass defenses and interceptions and hopefully leading the league in the categories.
