Continuing the AW random media topics, I randomly had a thought about DSFL and it having a fantasy season much like the ISFL would. What would it mean? How would it work? And most importantly, how's the scoring and who are your best fantasy performers or which positions should be targeted.
I think first you have to look at the scoring and work off of there before you determine first if it could work and then at the next rules and such so we shall start with the scoring aspects! That is the most fun thing anyways, right?
For the scoring rules, I used the latest ones that started in Season 41 which can be found HERE.
Oh, also, for the purpose of this exercise, this is using stats from the Season 43 DSFL season!
Quarterback Fantasy Scoring
Cue and McRobinson were the 2 stars here with the other starters being around the same or within 20 points between 3rd place and 8th place. Your top 5 had 2 rookies in it as well which is exciting to see! Generally, if we are thinking about comparing this to the ISFL Fantasy, with a 5 user draft, it might pay dividends to grab some top QB options or a running QB such as McRobinson who scored a lot of points because of his scrambling ability.
Running back Fantasy Scoring
Again, you see some standouts at the top with the top 2 being the best and a couple others following. However, unlike QBs, you do see a bit more of a drop off after the first 4 or 5 running backs with some tandems and such including GM or BOT players as well in those that scored 100+ points. It would be pretty hard in a 5 team format but getting one of the top 5, you can probably make out okay. We will talk on it later but the running backs may be a reason to change up some rules.
Wide Receiver Fantasy Scoring
Wide Receivers look a bit better in terms of overall spread of fantasy points. There are 7 wide receivers with 200+ points and about 11 or 12 that I would consider relevant scorers. A 5 team format could see 2 wide receivers be solid with the best wideouts being some great gets.
Tight End Fantasy Scoring
Tight ends are an interesting story here. A good tight end in NFL or ISFL Fantasy can be great to have but DSFL wise, how much would it matter. It seems like it would matter a decent amount if you got the 1st or even 2nd tight end compared to 5th. There are about 3 solid TE scorers with others falling enough behind I would consider it to be a position to secure.
Offensive Live Fantasy Scoring
Offensive Line is a weird position because of all the BOTs and general lack of overall users at the position. Would BOTs be draftable? Probably not, right? You have about 7-10 users at least at the position so they could be drafted. The top OL are way above the others so it seems like a position that could certainly help win you a draft.
Kicker Fantasy Scoring
Ah, nice fantasy scoring distribution. Of course the kickers would do this. With the scores being generally the same, a good kicker on a good or decent offense can help but it won't be the biggest difference. In a 5-team format, kicker can be left for later as they usually are and you can feel okay about that.
Defensive Line Fantasy Scoring
Defensive Line, the rookie position! Maybe, or at least in this class it was. I think defensive line in general has a pretty high turnover rate from DSFL to ISFL and making that jump up to the pros so it makes sense to see a lot of rookies being the high scorers. The DSFL defensive linemen were not big scorers. The top 7 had a range of 20 points between the top and bottom making it to be a lower priority position. Unless you know you can get an absolute stud it is a position you could likely take later.
Linebacker Fantasy Scoring
Linebackers are your high scoring defensive threats for fantasy. However, there is a nice conglomeration of scorers towards the top. 9 linebackers scored at least 200 fantasy points on the season making it a solid position. It however, because of the solid distribution, is a low drafting priority because you can get a solid scorer as your 5th chosen linebacker. They can certainly change a team's ranking by having the best but it is a position that you should probably get a high scorer no matter when drafted.
Defensive Back Fantasy Scoring
Defensive back turns out to be pretty interesting. Generally, it is a cornerback position that dominates but these players can be moved all around the secondary. Your top 6 scorers were pretty good with the top 3 being just a bit better. It is all about getting those pass defenses, interceptions, and hopefully some touchdowns for these guys but stat wise, it is a consistent enough position to take a decent guy here and do well.
Overall Thoughts
I thought looking at each position and their scoring was pretty interesting. It seems like there are a decent enough distribution at some positions but others you have a big difference. However, could you make drafting work to take away some huge advantages sure. With a serpentine draft, if you take RB3, you could likely take QB1 or QB2, or another top scorer and end up okay. Similar to if you take Hogmally and RB1 or something, you aren't guaranteed to win because you won't usually end up with the top WR or QB or others. I do think though, you would need some differences here in how it would be run.
Potential Changes
So, I think overall, it could and would work to play DSFL fantasy but probably have some different rules and different understanding.
Obviously, the DSFL is ever changing which makes it the hardest. You can't go off what happened last season because some of these players just won't exist to draft the following season. It would certainly make it hard and you may have less participation in it because it does take some research. However, with trade deadline additions and such, it could be fun to add some late waiver addition if your top RB is replaced because they went IA or something. The optics of it all would make it hard in general.
Next, the way drafts are done would probably need to be changed a bit. There are a couple ways to take it which would be smaller groups or less players drafted. With money on the line, I would maybe consider both? Maybe groups of 4 and remove some players to be drafted.
QB
RB
WR
WR
TE
OL

LB

Maybe you drop the flex and the 2nd RB based off the scoring dips we saw. Or maybe having those extra 100 point scorers would make enough of a difference to keep them.
In general, I would probably say no changes at first and see how it goes but of course we had to talk about some potential issues and some potential fixes to them.
Now, would DSFL Fantasy ever be a thing? Probably not. It takes another person and people to run it and the participation may be low due to the ever changing DSFL landscape, however there may be an option.
DSFL Fantasy Lite?
Could you take some of this stuff and include more DSFL based games or a fantasy lite version of sorts? I think you could.
Maybe instead of groups, you fill out a form and take one player at each position amongst everyone and then scores are tallied at the end of the season. Instead of groups, all players are fair game to all but all scoring remains the same.
This cuts out the need for fantasy group managers and losing out on potential top scorers or being at a huge group based disadvantage.
Money can be distributed to the top X% of players or tiers can be decided similar to that. Maybe top scorer gets a bonus and such and then top 5 get something and then can have tiers for the rest. Maybe having the perfect team (choosing all the top scorers at each position) gets a huge prize!
It could be a fun addition for newer users or DSFL players who know that league better at least to start and compete for some small league cash prizes!
In general, this is all hypothetical and just a random idea and one that I had worked on the scoring so why not write about it?
