Spicy early season news out of Honolulu is hard to come by, especially when it comes to how rock solid the locker room and management seem from the outside. Coming off a Ultimus championship, they was little turnover as the club made preparations for a run at back to back titles. But could there be a kink the in the armour?
Reports from an unidentified source have newly minted RB1A Stetson David as unhappy with his current contract and role on the club. Last year he shared the running back duties with Bean Delphine Jr, with Bean carrying a slight advantage in usage and workload. With age beginning to catch Bean, David took over as the lead back in training camp, but is now not a fan of the work splitting apparently. It was rumoured that he was heard saying to a small group of teammates,
“The future is now and it should be my time! I dunno if they’re (Honolulu GMs) trying to keep my value down or what, but I should be getting fed. I think they’re trying to keep my touches down to be able to sign me cheap. Lock me up cheap and then use me. We RBs need our own union, cause we get treated like we’re a dime a dozen. I’m even pretty sure some of our management don’t even know my damn name yet either!!”
Stetson’s contract does run out after this campaign, so if he remains unhappy, there is reason to believe he’ll test free agency. Although he may find the market pretty stiff with most teams having a solid lead back already. Many teams have more proven options on their roster already and even in terms of his own draft class, there are RBs just as good or better than he’s shown to this point. Would he leave a situation in Honolulu where he’s on a very good team, with an aging offense? As that age creeps up, he figures to feature more and more prominently as the seasons go on. There’s no guarantee that he’ll get the increased workload and chance at multiple more Ultimus’ all in one location.
After 2 games, David’s output has been underwhelming at best as he has been outshone both in the run and receiving game by Delphine Jr. Maybe not the right way to go about things if you’re hoping to get paid this offseason.
When pressed on the rumours, Hahalua management dismissed them, refusing to comment on player’s happiness about their contracts.
“We as a team and the players themselves sign these contracts in good faith with the the hope that each side will live up to the terms and expectations. Stetson is signed till the end of the season, so he isn’t going anywhere for the time being. We are in constant communication with both he and his agent on the possibility of a new long term contract. While no deal has been agreed upon as of now, we don’t want any distractions for any of our players as we strive to win another Ultimus. This is all we will be commenting on this situation.”
So that’s the latest from Honolulu. I’m sure there will be much more coming as the season unfolds.
