Legion Lose to Liberty in Philly
By Phil E. Chezestake
The Philadelphia Liberty came off a crushing defeat in week 6 against the defending champion Arizona Outlaws and were looking to redeem themselves again at home against the Las Vegas Legion. This game turned out as many expected and the Liberty find themselves losing terribly to the best team in the league and winning comfortably against the worst team in the league. The Liberty win this one easily at home 30-10. This was a much needed victory for the team to develop momentum heading into the last half of the season.
What Went Well?
In a game like this, it’s difficult to assess the strengths of a team since the Legion don’t provide much of assessment. However, it’s important to highlight successes and Philadelphia fans won’t hesitate to rejoice in any victory.
Fox North deserves high praise for being the offensive player of this game. He had 6 receptions for 130 yards and averaged 21.7 yards a carry. He had a touchdown late in the third quarter and Rove was able to find him on routes regularly. The Liberty are currently 3rd in completion/attempts and a large part of this is Rove’s ability to find North and the other receivers successfully. If North can maintain his high level of performance, you can guarantee he will finish among the top 5 receivers in the league.
Damien Kroetch had a great performance as well and the Liberty depend on him and North to lead the wide receiver corps. Kroetch had 4 receptions for 91 total yards and had an impressive 22.8 average. No touchdowns for Kroetch this game, but he continues to impress with quick runs. The speed receiver provides the Liberty a diverse offensive scheme and will continue to become an integral component of the Liberty offense.
It’s difficult to not mention Luke Washington and Lincoln Jefferson when discussing the accomplishments of the defensive line. Washington racked up 12 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass deflection, and 1 interception while Jefferson had 8 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. This is Philadelphia’s 2 headed monster and they are a force to be reckoned with. Cornerback Tyler Oles put up some impressive stats as well with 7 tackles, 1 pass deflection, and 1 interception. Last year’s Rookie of the Year has struggled throughout this season, but may have found his groove with this game. The Liberty defense handled the Legion’s offensive line with ease. Several key members of the defensive line took down Josh Bercovici for an astounding 9 sacks.
What Didn’t Go Well?
Clifford Rove is getting better, but is still struggling with interceptions having committed one in this game. These careless mistakes against a lesser team demonstrate how important it will be for Rove to develop his football IQ to make better decisions on offense. He threw an interception off a possession that was just intercepted by Tyler Oles on defense in the first quarter. Oddly enough, it seems that Rove throws an interception in the first quarter of every game. However, this is definitely nitpicking since Rove had one of his best games of this season.
Liberty Impact Player of the Game
This week’s Liberty Impact Player of the Game goes to Clifford Rove (@Yurt6). He had an impressive 17/28 completion/attempts with 268 total yards. Rove threw 2 touchdowns this game and had the least amount of interceptions thus far this season. He finished with an average of 15.8 yards per pass. Liberty fans all over the country have much to look forward to with Rove and this game was a great example of how talented he is.
