Everyone knows about Mr. Irrelevant the guy that was picked after all the other guys. The dude who is barely good enough not to be awful. Now as irrelevant as they are everyone remembers them for being, well, irrelevant. So let's take a look at a teams 2nd to last picks. The real forgotten heros of the draft. The dudes who are better than the worst dudes in the draft but just barely.
More specificly let's take a look at Kansas City's last 2nd to last picks for fun.
S46 - Klepter - LaMarcus Love - DE
The latest 2nd to last pick for the Coyotes is a Defensive End taken at #55 overall in the S46 DSFL draft. Love was the last Defensive End taken in S47 which in a way makes him the DE Mr. Irrelevant but Love has put up a WHOPPING 57 TPE so far since they joined the league. They created and then put in work to do the rookie tasks and haven't been seen on the forums since 1/27/24. Unfortunately it's a slow start to the S46 stud but it is still early in their career
S45 - fty271 - Damian Prince - DE
The Coyotes have a thing for edging as the S45 2nd to last pick was another Defensive End taken at 37th overall. Prince did have the honor of not being the last DE taken in the draft but the 2nd to last for some poetic drama. Prince also did some heavy lifting putting up a huge 57 TPE showing that DEs can be hard workers to before leaving the forums on 11/14/23 becoming the last pick before the last pick formerly known as Prince.
S44 - Air Crou - Giannis Kroustis Jr. - OL
The S44 draft is interesting for the Coyotes as they were able to snag a formerly very active user in Air Crou with their second to last pick and 29th overall. The Coyotes didn't go DE with this pick but did pick a thick boy from the other side of the line. Kroustis was the 2nd to last OL picked in the S44 draft which is again a great theme that must mean something. Kroustis did have 87 TPE and looked to be promising and be a steal of the draft but on 10/19/23 Kroustis retired less than a month after the player joined the league. This would also be the last time AC would post a thread in the ISFL.
S43 - Aspaz95 - Jerod Mustard - TE
S43 was a huge draft compared to the three that would follow it as the Coyotes had the privilege and absolute honor of not only taking Mustard as their 2nd to last pick but the Tight (nice) End (nice) would be the 69th (nice) overall pick. Now as a TE myself I respect the fast OL with hands and a guy named after a condiment is always going to be a star on my radar. Unfortunately Mustard never passed 50 TPE due to never creating an update thread. Mustard was seen for the first and last time on 7/19/23 and never seen his honor of being the 69th pick (man am I glad we let everyone get drafted without even doing the bare minimum).
Now I can keep doing this but I don't want to spend all night digging through the DSFL ineligible thread because that's where all of KCC's 2nd to last picks are currently. We can sum up the last 4 of the Coyotes draft and get a solid elite average TPE of 63 with all of the users being IA/retired.
I'm not sure if this is poor scouting (probably not) or draft classes running out of steam in the back half but all in all the 2nd to last pick has been mostly a loss for the DSFL team that drafts them. Losing that pick takes away an IA that should never touch the field in a DSFL game unless the draft classes are abysmal for a year or two and all the active players at that position have made the jump to the ISFL and not replaced by a GM bot.
Yes taking a draft pick away is a huge punishment but it's not the end of the world for a DSFL team like some have made it out to be.
I don't blame KCC's GMs as sending the wrong DC or forgetting to remove a player that is no longer on your team has happened to me. Especially something rare as a call up because an ISFL team is having a fire sale. I do believe the team should be punished to prevent issues like this happening in the future but I also believe HO and the sim team could take some blame as well for not doing a 5 minute conversation reminding everyone that a player was called up when DCs were submitted. It might not solve all the issues with the current process but it would have at least caught this one.
