Defensive Line Standouts - Week 13
Welcome to week 13 of our Season 3 Defensive Line Standouts! An exciting week in our world as we see yet another record fall, this time for sacks in a season. With multiple players at or within reach of the magical sack number, 23, it will be interesting to see how many are able to surpass it. We also saw a second record broken this week and Tomlinson from the Orange County Otters recorded his 21st tackle for loss on the year, breaking to old record of 20, held by defensive tackle, Spearhead. Will the records continue to fall in the banner year for defensive linemen? Only time will tell! Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
F. Wozy ($ x8) 8 TKL, 1 TFL, 5 SCK, 1 forced fumble
Making his ninth appearance here this year after finishing with eight in Season 2, Wozy has made a very strong case for a much-needed pay raise. His 8 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble is one of, if not the best performance from a defensive lineman this season. Wozy has had little to no help this year though, as he has 8 of his team’s 12 appearances, meaning he makes up for 2/3 of the Yeti appearances here. This man needs some help badly. He’ll finish off his season with a home game against the San Jose SaberCats, who have allowed 48 sacks on the year.
J. Tuck ($ x10) 5 TKL, 3 SCK
Another week, another multi-sack performance from Tuck. This week was of particular note, however, as his 3 sacks were enough to break the season sack record of 26, that he set last week. He currently sits at 29 on the season (an average of over 2 a game!), with only 1 game remaining. His final game of the regular season will be on the road against a Las Vegas Legion team that has allowed the most sacks in the NSFL. Expect at least a couple more sacks to be added to his total as he continues his quest for back-to-back MVP titles and a three-peat for NSFL titles.
B. Blade ($ x8) 10 TKL, 3 TFL
First, the bad news. Blade was unable to get to the quarterback this week. Good news, though, he was still able to record 10 tackles (the most of anyone on our list this week) and 3 tackles for loss. Good defensive ends are not just pass rushers, they can be a boon in the run game as well, and Blade proved that here. It has become increasingly difficult to make our list without a sack, yet here he is. Blade will finish his season out with a tough road game in Arizona against a squad that has allowed the least sacks in the NSFL.
Other Great Performers
R. Maddox ($ x5) 7 TKL, 2 TFL, 1 SCK
A. de Ligt ($ x5) 4 TKL, 3 TFL, 1 SCK
V. Lockkeu ($$$) 6 TKL, 3 TFL, 1 SCK
While the three defensive ends listed first each had multiple sacks, the defensive ends here contributed more to stopping run, each with multiple tackles for loss. Each of the performances directly above would land you in the top half most weeks. Maddox made his fifth appearance on our list with 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Next, we have a pair of super-rookies, with de Ligt making his fifth appearance and Lockkeu making his third. Each finished the week with at least 4 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and a sack.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
B. Bjornsson ($ x9) 5 TKL, 1 TFL, 3 SCK
Bjornsson has been an odd case this year. He’s made our list nine times, yet has games where he absolutely disappears, including two games with no stat-line at all. Lucky for the Wraiths, this was not one of those weeks. His 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 3 sacks were good enough to land him on top of our list for defensive tackles this week. With the Wraiths all be eliminated from playoff contention, he’ll continue his quest for 23 sacks next week against an Orange County team that has two very good tackles, yet are a little lacking in the interior.
M. Ramrio ($ x8) 6 TKL, 1 TFL, 2 SCK
Ramrio had yet another great game this week as he finished with 6 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 sacks. He’s been one of the few bright spots on the Philadelphia defensive line, as he’s accounted for nearly 62% of his team’s appearances on our list. Although he hasn’t been nearly as good in the pass rush as he was last year, he made up for it in his run support, which has been phenomenal. He will finish the regular season against a Baltimore Hawks offensive line that has allowed the second least sacks in the NSFL.
D. Miller ($ x13) 2 TKL, 2 SCK
Well, he beat lucky number thirteen. His 2 tackles and 2 sacks were just enough to make our list this week in what was a surprisingly down week for the defensive tackles in the NSFL as a whole. It doesn’t matter to Miller though, as he continues his streak in hopes of doing what many thought impossible, making our list all 14 weeks of the season. It’s a true testament to his consistent level of play, and I hope to see him make it here next week. It would be surprising for him to not make it 14 straight weeks though, as he faces a Colorado Yeti line that is notoriously weak up the middle with their run blocking.
Other Great Performers
G. King ($ x6) 2 TKL, 2 SCK
J. Cox ($ x5) 3 TKL, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
J. Reigns ($$) 4 TKL, 1 SCK
Making his sixth appearance, King has been on fire as of late after a rather quiet start, and currently sits at 20 sacks on the season. He should be a heavy favorite for defensive rookie of the year and a possible Pro Bowl spot. Cox is making his fifth appearance here with a solid stat-line of 3 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack. The other half of the Otter’s interior line, Reigns also qualified for our list this week, just narrowly making the cut for his second appearance on the year.
Team Appearances After Week 13*
Baltimore: 25 - 0
San Jose: 25 - 2
Arizona: 23 - 2
Las Vegas: 21 - 2
Orange County: 19 - 2
Yellowknife: 17 - 2
Philadelphia: 13 - 1
Colorado: 12 - 1
Our standings stay exactly the same week but, there we some key gains made. With Baltimore failing to have a player make our list for the first time this season, San Jose is now tied for first with twenty-fie appearances, while Arizona is now within striking distance, being down by only two, with twenty-three. Philadelphia and Colorado dug themselves a tad deeper this week as everyone not named Baltimore had two players appear on our list. Dan Miller, defensive tackle of the San Jose SaberCats, continues his ridiculous streak at thirteen appearances in thirteen weeks. A perfect season is now only one week away! Luckily for him he faces a Colorado team that has allowed the second most sacks in the NSFL. Will history be made? Tune in next week! As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, I’d love to hear them below.
*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole. For example, the Arizona Outlaws lead the league in sacks by 26 but, are currently third on our list in number of individual appearances.
