Defensive Line Standouts - Week 14
Welcome to week 14 of our Season 3 Defensive Line Standouts! Well, it’s finally here, the final week of season 3. For half the league, this will be their last game as they’re sent home to cheer for whichever team they hate the least. For the other half of the league the get to continue their quest of finally defeating the boogeyman known as they Arizona Outlaws to claim their first Ultimus Trophy. Screw that though, we’re here to talk about defensive linemen. The big question on everyone’s mind, did Dan Miller do it? Did he pull off the perfect season and make it 14 for 14? Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
J. Tuck ($ x11) 7 TKL, 1 TFL, 3 SCK
Tuck finished his final game of the regular season with 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 3 sacks. This week makes for back to back games of 3 sacks for Tuck, a statistic that any player on this list would kill for. He finished the season with an NSFL record, 32 sacks. The Outlaws have clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs and considering they’ve only lost 1 game in 2 seasons in the dessert, have a great shot at a championship three-peat. They will host the Orange County Outlaws in the ASFC Championship game, for the third season in a row.
A. de Ligt ($ x6) 7 TKL, 5 TFL
De Light was a run stopping master this week, finishing with 7 tackles and a very impressive 5 tackles for loss, which ties Tomlinson’s performance for a single game record. The future is very bright for this young man as he finished his rookie season with 19 tackles for loss, the second most in the NSFL, and just shy of the season record from last year. Although their season is done, de Light performance this year is one of the many reasons things are looking up in San Jose.
D. Davidson ($$$$) 4 TKL, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Making his fourth appearance on our list, Drew Davidson finished the week with 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack. He rounded out his regular season with a total of 44 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks. Philadelphia has spent almost the entire season in the bottom quarter of our rankings but, Davidson did his part to dig them out. Philadelphia was able to qualify for the playoffs in only their second year of existence, and will face a Baltimore Hawks team (in Baltimore) that has only lost 2 home games over the past 2 seasons.
Other Great Performers
F. Wozy ($ x9) 2 TKL, 1 TFL, 1 SCK,
C. Okonkwo ($ x6) 4 TKL, 2 TFL
E. Gustavsson ($$$$) 2 TKL, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
With a solid performance this week Wozy gained his ninth appearance on our list and clinched the second overall spot for appearances by a defensive end on our list. His season will be covered more in-depth for our S3 review. The second San Jose defensive end on our list, Okonkwo is also making his sixth appearance this week after finishing with 4 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. Gustavsson is the second defensive end rookie on our list this week (the other being de Ligt), and cliched his fourth spot with 2 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
G. King ($ x6) 6 TKL, 4 SCK
King has been playing out of his mind the second half of the season, and continued to do so this week, earning his sixth appearance with 6 tackles and a ridiculous 4 sacks. After this week’s performance, he has 9 sacks over the past 4 weeks. With Tuck on the outside (and shifting around the line) and King now wreaking havoc on the inside, the Outlaws’ defensive line will be creating nightmares for opposing offenses for many years to come. The Outlaws will be hosting the Orange County Otters in the ASFC Championship for their next game. Although they have 2 of the best offensive tackles in the league, their interior line is considerably weaker. Expect King to have another great game.
B. Bjornsson ($ x10) 8 TKL, 2 TFL, 2 SCK
Although Bjornsson and his fellow Wraiths will be sitting at home for the remainder of the season, they made sure to go out swinging. Bjornsson finished the game with 8 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks, and the Wraiths beat the Otters at home. Not a bad finish to the season. His 10 appearances this year were enough to tie him for second place among his fellow defensive tackles and make him a sure-fire Pro Bowl nomination. Bjornsson accounted for roughly 53% of his team’s appearances.
V. Cox ($ x10) 5 TKL, 3 SCK
After a fantastic performance that saw Cox finish with 5 tackles and 3 sacks, he was able to claim his tenth appearance on our list. This marks the second season in a row he has made our list at least twice after he was honored here 11 times last season. Although many suspected Cox may take a step back when his fellow defensive tackle, Ramrio, jumped ship for greener pastures, he proved his detractors wrong by putting up another great season. Although the Legion weren’t as fortunate in the win column this year as their fellow expansion team, they’re clearly making great strides in righting their ship.
Other Great Performers
A. Saginaw ($$$) 4 TKL, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
J. Cox ($ x5) 2 TKL, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
C. Chambers III ($$$) 7 TKL
R. Sandoval ($ x10) 3 TKL, 1 SCK
Saginaw claimed his fourth spot on our list this week with 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack. Cox, who has had a quietly solid season, finished the week with 2 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack, claiming the fifth spot. Chambers and Sandoval both tied with 7 points for the sixth spot, so they both get a mention here. Chamber was an absolute plug in the middle with seven tackles, while Sandoval was able to get to the quarterback once, finishing with 3 tackles and 1 sack.
Team Appearances After Week 14*
San Jose: 28 - 3
Baltimore: 26 - 1
Arizona: 25 - 2
Las Vegas: 23 - 2
Orange County: 20 - 1
Yellowknife: 19 - 2
Philadelphia: 14 - 1
Colorado: 13 - 1
Well, it finally happened. Baltimore, who had either been in the lead or tied for the lead the entire season was finally over taken, and not by the Outlaws either. The San Jose SaberCats are officially the new holders of our team crown with 28 total player appearances, while Baltimore fall to #2 with 26. Colorado, who was in last for a majority of the season, retains the bottom spot, while Philadelphia, who finished at the bottom last year, retains the seventh spot. Even bigger news perhaps, was failure of Dan Miller to make our list this week. A model of consistency all season, he hit a bit of a speed bump in week 14 and finished with 6 tackles, leaving him off our list by just one(!) point.
Make sure to be on the lookout for our season review sometime in the near future! As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, I’d love to hear them below.
*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole, just how many times a player has appeared on our list. For example, the Arizona Outlaws lead the league in sacks by 32(!) but, are currently third on our list in number of individual appearances. This could be attributed to one of two things (or both), either their linebackers and DBs are collecting a ton of sacks (they are), or players that are making appearances for them are having huge games (they definitely are).
