[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Freshman Year[/div]
Freshman year, Ricardo Sandoval started at Defensive Tackle for San Diego State University coming out of Helix Charter High School in Southern California, a perennial powerhouse. Big things were expected, and he mostly delivered, with SDSU having a decent season.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 1
SDSU 13 @ Sacramento State University 3
Sandoval's Stats: 3 Tackles, 1 Sack, 1 Fumble Recovery[/div]
In his first game, Sandoval came up big with two notable plays. First, in the 3rd quarter, he came up with a sack on 3rd and 1 to force SSU to just a field goal and he later secured a fumble forced by a teammate to ice the game as Sacramento State threatened on SDSU's 20-yard line. Since they won by a smaller margin, SDSU remained unranked.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 2[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"](25) Illinois 23 @ SDSU 16[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 6 Tackles, 2 Tackles for Loss[/div]
NSFL Players in the Game: Luc Long
In this game, The Living Beefcake did not pick up any sacks as Illinois secured a not-so-convincing win against SDSU in San Diego. Sandoval did give previous year's Heisman runner-up Dwayne Allsworthy a hard time, hitting him for two 3-yard losses.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 3[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]SDSU 52 @ Texas State 3[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 4 Tackles, 3 Sacks, 1 Safety[/div]
Sandoval easily had his best game of the season in this game. Sacking the opposing QB thrice and tackling the HB on a screen play in the end zone for a safety on a questionable play call. SDSU did not move into the Top 25 but were among the "Others Receiving Votes."
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 4[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"](13) UNC 17 @ SDSU 19[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 3 Tackles, 2 Tackles for Loss, 1 Pass Defended[/div]
NSFL Players in this Game: Greg Taylor
In a last-second stunning 51-yard field goal defeat of the number 13 team UNC, Sandoval had a decent game, amassing 3 tackles, 2 of them for loss. The oddity here was when the UNC QB threw a checkdown to his tailback, just behind Sandoval, who stuck his hand up and batted it down to get a Pass Defended in the stat book. SDSU moved to 27th, just outside the Top 25.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 5[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]SDSU 38 @ Air Force 17[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 6 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 2 Tackles for Loss[/div]
NSFL Players in this Game: Gadget Tech
Sandoval had a fantastic performance against a weak Air Force inside offensive line. With 2 Tackles for Loss and 2 Sacks, Sandoval helped to effectively shut down both their running AND passing game. However, SDSU remained in 27th.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 6[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Hawai'i 12 @ SDSU 13[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 1 Tackle, 1 Pass Defended[/div]
NSFL Players in this Game: Jogn Floggity
Sandoval went out with a hard ankle twist in this game at halftime, amassing only a tackle and hitting the QB's hand as he threw, generating a pass defended for himself. In a game riddled with Aztec injuries, it was a miracle they were able to squeak this one out, even in San Diego. They moved up to 24th despite a somewhat pitiable performance.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 7[/div]
(24) SDSU 35 @ Utah State 17
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: DNP[/div]
In this relatively easy conference game victory for SDSU, they opted to rest players injured in the previous game against Hawai'i. By winning, SDSU moved to 23rd in the nation, improving to 6-1 overall, and 3-0 in conference play. This win moved them into bowl eligibility.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 8[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]New Mexico 3 @ (23) SDSU 64[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 3 Tackles, 1 Tackle for Loss, 1 Sack, 1 Fumble Recovery[/div]
In this game, Sandoval was subbed out at half while SDSU was up 42-0. He still recorded good stats, and with this blowout and the losses of Western Michigan, Virginia Tech, Akron, and UCF, SDSU moved to 17th in the rankings.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 9[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"](17) SDSU 24 @ (3) Boise State 28[/div]
NSFL Players in this Game: Kristoffer O'Sullivan and Charlie Law
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 10[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"](25) SDSU 35 @ San Jose State 15[/div]
Sandoval's Stats: DNP (Disciplinary Issues)
In Game 9, SDSU lost on a last-minute touchdown by number 3 Boise State, falling to 25th in the rankings, but working their way back up to 23rd after beating San Jose Sate. After 10 games, SDSU sat at 8-2 (5-1). Sandoval did not play in these two games due to 3 missed curfews in a 2-week period and was suspended two games. This led to limited PT in Game 11 and the Conference Championship.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Game 11[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Fresno State 17 @ (23) SDSU 25[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 5 Tackles[/div]
NSFL Players in this Game: Chidubem Onkonkwo
Here, SDSU wins their final home game and final regular season game by 8 against Fresno State, ending the regular season 20th in the nation, at 9-2 (6-1), winning a spot in the Mountain West Conference Championship against 11-0 Boise State, a shoe-in for the College Football Playoff.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Conference Championship[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"](20) SDSU 7 @ (2) Boise State 38[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 2 Tackles[/div]
SDSU loses the Conference Championship to a clearly superior BSU team who would go on to lose 41-40 against Alabama in the National Championship.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Las Vegas Bowl[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"](21) SDSU 3 @ (13) Washington 38 (Happy now, @Rindiee?)[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Sandoval's Stats: 3 Sacks[/div]
NSFL Players in this Game: Budda Browning, Wren Piper, Robert Phelps, and Romeo Devitt,
In this final game against the University of Washington, San Diego State just looked lost. True Freshman QB, Budda Browning, now an NSFL Wide Receiver, was 21-26 for 368 yards, tossing 4 TDs and rushing for 1. Sandoval DID get his licks in, hitting Browning in the backfield 3 times, the only bright spot in a poor defensive performance from SDSU. They finish the season 9-4 as the MWC's West division champs. Sandoval was named to the All-Freshman 1st team and named Outstanding Defensive Freshman.
