(S51) PT #4 - Pop Warner

Written option: Children are the future of the game! Your player has just volunteered part of their time to be a positional coach for a pop warner(youth) football team! Between the hectic ISFL schedule, you have one day a week to whip them into shape and teach the kids how to play real simulation football. What do you do? What are the day to day practices like? Who do you enlist to help you? Get creative and start writing!

Working with these kids will be the highlight of my week! I've got a group of 12 year olds who are just starting to learn the game, and their enthusiasm is adorable. My focus isn't just on throwing mechanics or reading defenses, it's about building their confidence and teaching them to love the game. I brought in our rookie running back sensation Lee Rushmore, veteran reciever Karl Idlewyld, and standout linebacker Senior Seau to help run drills, making sure every kid gets personal attention.

We start each practice with team-building exercises, then break into small groups for position specific work. The best part is our mini-scrimmage at the end, where they get to put everything together. Seeing their faces light up when they complete their first pass or make their first touchdown... that's what it's all about. These kids remind me why I fell in love with football in the first place, and I know it sounds cheesy but I'm learning as much from them as they are from me.

Jerald’s schedule was packed, juggling practices, games, and film sessions as he tried to make his mark in the DSFL. But when he got the opportunity to volunteer as a positional coach for a local Pop Warner football team, he couldn’t pass it up. Working with kids was something that brought him back to the roots of his passion for the game—those first moments when football was just about having fun and finding out what you were capable of. So every week, on his one day off, he showed up on the youth practice field, ready to whip these young players into shape.

His focus was on the basics, but he made sure to keep it fun, too. Every practice, Jerald ran the kids through footwork drills—emphasizing proper technique, staying light on their feet, and keeping their hips low. He set up cones and ladders, pushing the kids to move with precision and speed. He knew that the foundation of every great defensive back was footwork and agility. Sometimes he even challenged them to races through the ladder, throwing in little prizes for the fastest feet—like getting to call the next play in a scrimmage.

Jerald also put an emphasis on awareness. He set up a passing drill where he acted as the quarterback, faking hand-offs, changing his eyes, and testing the kids to see if they could read him right. “Eyes up, watch the hips, don’t bite too soon!” he’d yell, his voice full of both enthusiasm and challenge. He wanted them to learn how to read the offense, to understand what was coming at them and to react with confidence. It was simulation football at a youth level—training them not just physically but mentally for the complexities of the game.

But he knew he couldn’t do it alone. So, he enlisted a few of his new Birddogs teammates to help out. Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, his cornerback teammates, showed up when they could, helping the kids understand coverage techniques. The Mario brothers had a great way of making the drills fun. They’d turn coverage practice into a game of tag, challenging the kids to keep up with them as they weaved in and out of the cones. Jerald loved how the brothers kept the energy light while still teaching real skills.

The practices were structured but never rigid. Jerald wanted the kids to learn, but he wanted them to love it, too. They ended every practice with a scrimmage, and Jerald made sure everyone got their shot. He’d cheer from the sideline, coaching in real-time, praising their efforts, and giving pointers when they made mistakes. He wanted them to understand that messing up was part of the process—something to learn from, not fear.

Naturally, Tua Domine's father Juan was the coach for his Pop Warner football team, so this sort of dynamic is familiar to him. With only a single day per week to devote to coaching the team, Tua would not be able to fundamentally change the behavior of the players. To maximize his effect on the team Tua would instead work on "coaching the coaches", perhaps showing drills or training methods that he has encountered during his time in college, the DSFL, and the ISFL. The main coaches could then start applying these methods in regular practices to instill a more robust method of training the players. Tua would also ask fellow teammates or retired ISFL players to attend the practices on a one-off basis, both to generate popularity among the team and attract new players as well as to share their stories of playing real simulation football. Perhaps in the offseason, Tua could hold a training camp to devote more time towards helping the younger generation.

Juan never had the opportunity to play organized sports as a kid. So when the Kaiju approached him about a community outreach program to work as a youth football coach he jumped at the chance. A stark visual contrast is drawn between the 6’5” 345 nose tackle and the adolescent athletes, but Rascal tries hard to impart that ancient pearl of wisdom into his charges: “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”

When parents drop their children off at the camp they expect their kids to come back with a new jersey, a collectible lunchbox, and maybe a few bumps and bruises (the last of these expectations exacerbated by the terror they feel at the sight of the coaches). But the Kaiju camp is full of gentle giants who really enjoy the opportunity to work with the community. And Juan is very proud that he feels like he has taught these children a solid lesson in their time together.

As the great Michael Jordan said, "Fuck them kids." Just kidding. One day a week really limits the amount of coaching time but this is Pop Warner football and we are still trying to have fun before we turn their little brains into CTE jelly. So practices are mostly going to consist of working on the basics and fundamentals, and installing a very simple playbook. We aren't fooling anyone with our detailed schemes here. Probably a lot more running plays than passing, but also a good time to work on blocking and tackling, which is also something a few ISFL players could benefit from as well. And some basic conditioning as well, since some of these kids are spending a lot of time playing videogames and eating Totino's Pizza Rolls. Emphasize fun here and give everyone a chance to try all the positions without shoe horning the fat kids into the offensive line. (153 words)

Mako Shark knows nothing, absolutely nothing, is going to get a child more ready to prepare for sports than the threat of imminent death. So she has a very simple 3 step program to teach kids how to become perfect specimens. Step one, prepare an olympic swimming pool, preferably with salt water. Second, put the kids in the swimming pool. Third, get in the pool. The kids will learn to swim and swim like their life depends on it, and Shark won't even have to do anything other than let her dorsal fin peek out above the water from time to time. She's got the perfect plan to create the next generation of Michael Phelpses! Wait, what was that about football? Sorry, Mako can't help there, she learns by doing, and it's a little hard to throw footballs with a pair of fins. At most she can help teach her kids her best pass rush move, the "bite feint then swim around them while they worry about getting bit by a shark" technique.
