I don't think I've ever had a smoother flight in my life. A private jet? For me? Really? I flew coach to the draft, I've never had a first class experience in my life. They told me the flight was five hours, but when you're spending that time watching tv, listening to good music, messing around on your phone, and drinking champagne it certainly doesn't feel that long. As we land I come to another realization: since I'm the only one on this thing I won't have to wait an eternity to get my bags, I can just walk off this thing as soon as the pilot deems the situation safe. I could get used to this.
We come to a stop and I get to my feet, my pilot, an older gentleman somewhere around his mid-fifties, walks to the door with me, assuring my flight was smooth along the way. As he opens the door I see it, my new life. Media from every outlet is waiting just outside, I guess I was too focused to look out the window and notice them. Cameras flash, and I'm nearly blinded by dozens of people trying to get the first good shot of me with my Pythons hat on. For a moment, I'm frozen, never experiencing anything like this before in my life.
Then I feel it, a light pat on the back followed up by the audible sound of a man telling me to go straight ahead. He's a big dude, bald, black shirt, sunglasses, an earpiece on his left side, pretty much your stereotypical bodyguard. Thankfully, none of these people seem to want to hurt me, but if they did they'd have a pretty tough time.
I walk through a double door, then down a small corridor and into a separate room. I guess this is where my conference is being held. The hall is decked out in Pythons colors, their logo, and some general DSFL visuals with sponsors on what remained blank.
"The floor is yours Mr. Wachter."
Mr. Wachter? Yeah, I can definitely get used to this. I take one last deep breath and swallow down any anxiety that tried to manifest itself. This is my moment, I earned this, time to speak confidently and proud, I'm one of the faces of this franchise now and I need to present myself that way. I walk to the podium and wave out to the crowd. I had imagined keeping a straight, Kanye West-esque demeanor, but can't help but smile as I arrive. Before I can say a word, half the media in attendance are on their feet trying to get their questions in. But I'm the one with the microphone, and that fact makes it pretty easy for me to cut them off as intended.
"Before we get started here I have a few things I want to open with, I'd appreciate it if you all waited for me to finish up before asking anything."
To their credit, they simmer down and allow me to get my short monologue in.
"I know it's generic, but I just want to say this is absolutely a dream come true. I have a lot of friends and family back home who have struggled their whole life just to get by, so when I say I'm blessed to be here I absolutely mean it. I'm not married and I don't have any kids, so it's beyond easy for me to say being drafted by the Pythons was the greatest moment of my life. There's not even any competition reqlly. I had some great talks with the GMs beforehand and knew this was where I wanted to be, so hearing my name called out at number two overall was the greatest feeling I've ever felt. These guys wanted me, they made it clear I was number one on their board, and I couldn't be happier to be here. I'm looking forward to getting to know my teammates and making history this year... So with that said, the floor is open, lets hear those questions."
"You've finally made it to the DSFL. What's your next goal?"
"I'm on my Ash Ketchum grind now, you know? Be the very best. I want to help take a team that was bottom of the league a year ago and elevate it to the top. Honestly, my next goal is to get the playbook down, it's a lot different than what we ran in Maryland. After that, I think we're set to make a run. Sorry for the long answer, this is my first time doing this, but I guess my main goal is to just help this team turn it around."
"Are you disappointed you weren't #1 overall? Will you hold a grudge?"
"I'd be a liar if I said going first overall wouldn't be awesome, but this is honestly where I want to be. When Norfolk moved up I was wondering if it was for me, and since they're so close to home I was excited for the idea, but ultimately they took a more scarce position and I think it'll be good for them. Portland is arranging some things for me to be able to spend time at home too,
so I can honestly say no part of me is dissappointed. As far as a grudge? Nah, not with Wolverine.
He's got the top name in the league already and a... unique story behind him. You know who I will have a grudge with though? Andre Bly. He was the guy who was supposed to be number one,
his name was all I heard when I got taken, putting him on a poster is a top priority."
"Does pineapple belong on a pizza?"
"People can do what they want, but it doesn't belong on my pizza."
"Who is your favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle?"
"Leonardo. They're all equal in the fact that they're mutant turtles, I guess they're still teenagers due to some leakage in the sewers or some aging factor only present in turtles too.
But Leonardo is the best ninja, he checks all four boxes. Plus he wears blue, which is my favorite color. Though I guess I should start getting used to this yellow."
"As the once great, X to the Z, Xzibit so eloquently put it, Whats the difference between me and you?"
"You talk a good one, but you don't do what you supposed to do. Although, in my mind, DMX is the only true X."
"Every player has a rival and such, who's yours are they another WR or a CB?"
"It's gotta be Andre Bly doesn't it? The top corner taken in the draft, the guy who looks the best on tape, he's got it all. When we play KC that's the matchup to watch. But he's not division, Fresh Booter and Tegan Atwell are. Some people had Fresh ahead of me, and I want to make them look dumb. If I don't have a better year than him I failed my team. As for Tegan? I'll teach her a thing or two about routes."
"What’s your take on your fellow Portland draftees? Who are you most excited to play with on that team from the draft?"
"I thought our draft was excellent personally. If you haven't been following the team directly, we made a trade for Jameis Christ who, I thought was excellent in the time he was on the field last year. After that, we went offense the first two rounds, got me and Carlito Crush. That's the guy I'm most excited to play with by the way. Carlito's a great guy, I met him at the draft and got to talk for a bit, and I think he's gonna be the best TE in the league this year. And then, of course,
after that we went and sured up the defensive side of the ball a bit. I thought that was a smart way to do it, the draft was deep with defensive talent so we waited on it and got two elite players on the offensive side of the ball. Me and Carlito are gonna put up numbers with Jameis throwing to us, we're actually going to hit up our first practice pretty soon after this, get some early reps in. I think we'll be a lot of fun to watch, I can't wait to get on the field with them."[/div]
