Ryan Sierra – OL – Orange County Otters
The Season 5 NSFL Draft Countdown
Tonight is the NSFL season 5 draft. Following a busy, but promising DSFL season, Sierra found himself in familiar territory as he much to prove to his critics. The coaching staff in Tijuana did an outstanding job preparing and guiding him through the ups and down of the rugged DSFL schedule. As the #7th pick in the DSFL rookie draft, the Luchadores made Ryan Sierra their first pick of the 2nd round, surprising all the analysts and most of all Sierra, himself. TJ Luchadores kept their cards close to their chest and never contacted Sierra about the prospect of playing for them. If there was anything to learn from that experience, he learned anything can happen in a draft.
Going by the interest Sierra has received from a few teams and comparing his skill set and improvement compared to the rest of the declared draft prospects, he feels confident about the possibility of becoming a 1st round pick in tonight’s NSFL season 5 draft.
Let’s review the teams who have shown interest in Ryan. The first team to contact him were the Baltimore Hawks, a full 20 days prior to the draft. Their early interest and diligence was intriguing and flattering for Sierra. The next team to contact the big offensive lineman was the Colorado Yeti. They had a few questions of their own and expressed some interest, but were more “kicking tires” at this point. The Yeti’s contact came just 8 days prior to the draft. The next day, Baltimore came ringing again, this time by their other GM, to get a sense of who they might be dealing with and possible options and to learn more about Sierra as a person. Now three days before the draft, Colorado makes another pass at Sierra, gauging interest and dedication to the game of football. Ryan is confident through his back and forth with both Baltimore and Colorado, he has a great opportunity to become an early pick, possibly even a 1st round pick with the competition and skill level of this draft class. The telling piece of this puzzle became apparent when both GM’s from Yellowknife reached out in consecutive days, Orange County with a quick hello, and Baltimore for a final go-round, dotting some “i ‘s” and crossing some “t’s”.
Today, draft day, he received two final messages wishing him “luck”, one from Yellowknife and the other from Orange County. The excitement as Sierra put it is, “Oozing out of me”. Heading into the draft, gauging by the interest received from these 4 teams, Sierra ranks his chances of being drafted by each team as follows: Baltimore with two picks in the 1st round, #3 and #6, Sierra feels this will be a likely landing spot for him. Yellowknife would be the second team who might take him, with the #4 pick to spend. The third team in the mix he could wind up with is the Orange County Otters. Having the final two picks of the 1st round, #7 and #8, Ryan sees OC as his last real chance to get drafted in the 1st round. The fourth team who had contacted Sierra has two picks in the 1st round, #1 and #2, the Colorado Yeti will realistically take the concensus two best players in the draft, and rightfully so. Passing up on those two ballers out of Portland would be a travesty. Where will he go? Baltimore, Yellowknife, or Orange County, or perhaps a flashback to one season ago when a team who never showed their interest until it was their turn to pick, like Tijuana, will Arizona choose Ryan Sierra with the #5 pick, despite never contacting him. Only time will tell. 25 minutes to be exact.
