After week 11 and the win against Norfolk, we faced the league favorite San Antonio Marshals at home. Rashaad Brooks informed the team that there would be major changes in game planning and we spent a ton of time in the head offices working on mentally preparing for the game. I don’t know what adjustments they made on offense, but I remember seeing John, Carlito, Jameis, and Goose in some intense sessions with our offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.John and Carlito told me later that they were spending extra sessions to prepare for this game. We wanted the league and all the other teams to know that we were going to be the top team in the DSFL and we were going to beat San Antonio in convincing fashion for week 12. After this game, there would be no question as to who the real favorites to win the DSFL championship would be.
I worked really closely with my defensive coordinators and the whole defensive squad. Waiters, Otto, Taylor, Richter, and I had our own intense sessions trying to figure out how to shut down the Marshals. If we weren’t running drills or practice on the field then we were in the head offices meeting rooms going over the Marshal’s offensive scheme and watching game tape on them. We knew they had a great run game and that would be their main weapon against those, so we needed lots of run support from Taylor and I needed to plug the middle against Mango and Stats. Our new defense was working so far and the 3-4 we had me getting some good 2 on 1 matchups with Norfolk’s offensive line so we were hoping I could do the same against San Antonio to give Waiters and Otto the best looks to sack and provide pass coverage. They said all I needed to do was clog up the middle and give the offensive lineman a hell of time trying to stop me. I’m glad I bulked up after my rehab! We were finally ready for the game and everyone was anxious for it to come around this week.
The Marshals’ did what they do best and Mango got a touchdown early in the 1st quarter, but we were able to adjust and stop them from a few drives to get the offense down the field for a Nugent field goal. I even got a sack for my first time in the DSFL. We finally caught up in the 2nd quarter and then took the lead at the half 13-10. The third quarter is really where we ramped up our defense. Glennie Retro was tackling guys left and right and Waiters got a sack to stop them at our 34 yard line. They ended up missing a 51 yard field goal which we capitalized on with a touchdown of our own late in the the quarter. We completely shut them down in the third. We got a bit lax on defense in the fourth and I got really gassed trying to keep up with their running backs. They managed a late touchdown, but it was too late and we ended up winning at home 23-17.
So yeah, we are 9 and 3 now and riding high again after losing to Chicago. We just can’t seem to lose to anyone but Chicago. I suppose that’s a curse they put on us, but I’m fine with them being the only team we lose to. It’s already looking like they won’t make the playoffs so we won’t have to worry about facing them in the West playoff game. We already know we can beat Norfolk handedly so we should be smooth sailing until the finals.
