Tiernan’s draft stock soars
Staff writer Frank Fuentes
On the back of being one of three RB prospects featured in the NSFL’s pre-emanant podcast, Irishman Luke “LT Smash” Tiernan’s draft stock has soared in recent hours.
Steadily climbing draft boards over the past week, there are rumours abound that Tiernan has been approached by at least three league GM’s directly over the past few days with a view to finding out more about the, up until now, publicity shy power RB out of Notre Dame.
Indeed, Tiernan seemingly being one of the few draftee’s not to hold their own press conference.
With only a solitary year of football tape to examine, this reporter has learned that many scouting staff around the league are going further back in time and taking heed of the plenty of available tape on Tiernan’s previous life as a high-level rugby union player.
We’ve pulled out some clips from his rugby career to highlight exactly why Luke Tiernan is the name being spoken when it comes to top RB prospects in front offices around the league.
As can be seen in the clip above, Tiernan shows obvious strength and powerful leg drive to break through a tackle and past the flailing arms to score from close distance.
Sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, have confirmed that at least two teams are looking at Tiernan from a viewpoint of being a specialist short yardage/goal line back, with obvious power in his trunk, it is clear to see why the man dubbed “The Tullow Tank” would be a good choice for such a role.
In our second clip, we see the full package on show from Tiernan, after initialling showing us some good feet and a nice cut to run past soft shoulders, Tiernan then open’s his stride, straight arming one defender before showing us some serious gas to outrun the rest of the defence and score for his side. What is obvious here is that perhaps teams will be underutilising Tiernan if they box him into a short yardage role.
Finally, there is the clip that has the fans drooling as Tiernan powers past a tackle before stiff arming an oncoming defender to the turf - BEAST MODE, fans around the league must be hoping that they will see plenty more of this from the Irishman come the regular season.
It remains to be seen if Tiernan will hold a press conference before Thursday night’s draft, with a few commentators suggesting that it could do Tiernan more harm than good as the buzz around this prodigious talent continues to help his draft stock.
In this reporter’s opinion, it would be foolish for anyone to be taking a RB in the first round given the relative scarcity in some other key positions, but that said, if one is to go, I’d be surprised if Tiernan wasn’t in the mix.
