The interviews are over, and the decisions are imminent. Draft day is upon us, and every prospect leaving college is ready for the day that will change their lives. We got the chance to sit down with highly touted Center Jogn Floggity, a Center who consensus boards are sure will hear his name in the first two rounds to hear his thoughts about where he might want to be drafted to and about his fellow linemen.
Coming out of high school, Jogn made it clear that he was only interested in going somewhere warm. “I got offers from a few school, sure, and some of them had a higher national ranking than Hawaii, but how could you turn down living in the Aloha State, eating malasadas on the beach in the sun?”
Indeed, Floggity had received offers from Wisconsin and Penn State before committing to the Rainbow Warriors, a decision he stands by. “It was a bit of a risk, sure, going to a school that doesn’t even always compete in the Bowl Game they host. There were some great guys up and down the line and all around the program at Hawaii, but you’ll forgive me for pointing out that there’s only one guy from the program in any mock draft I’ve seen. I’ve been asked if I regret not going to a stacked program like the Badgers particularly, getting to play on a line with Angus Winchester and Bernie Forthward; have Logan Ryder pump up my offensive yard stats; lift with JJ Reigns. But at the end of the day, I’ve made it this far and I got to live somewhere truly beautiful”.
This heavy focus on the weather in Hawaii has raised some eyebrows, given that half of the NSFL plays in weather that can hardly be considered temperate. The average temperature in Baltimore is 23° in the winter, which is practically balmy compared to their rumored future home in Toronto, and the wintertime average of 17°F in Denver is the same as the summertime average in Yellowknife - teams travelling to visit the Wraiths for a playoff game in January would arrive to an average of -21°F and 7 inches of snowfall, the snow is deeper than 20 inches for more than three quarters of the month and a bone-chilling low of -51° has been recorded.
Floggity, however, insists that his high school priority of the weather is not a factor that teams should be thinking about come draft day later tonight. “I mean I don’t have to worry too much, Orange County is picking #1. Is that too much of a ‘skill position’ thing to say? Oh man, the scouts said I was a good character guy, and a solid locker room leader”
“Seriously though, If anything I almost prefer the NSFC. The Hawks have such a good and menacing image, with that hawk swooping down and to the right, although seriously...Toronto? The Wraiths are going to have an amazing home-field advantage and some incredibly passionate fans, though I have to say I was a huge fan of the old man logo, and the Yeti have the best logo and color scheme in the league. I don’t think anyone should rule out any destination early and I’ll happily play wherever I’m drafted, but man that’s a solid looking conference”
Floggity is one of eight Offensive Lineman prospects in this draft - a position that will need to be filled up with converts from other positions or undrafted free agents, who some are derisively referring to as “bots” or “generated players”.
We asked Jogn about his fellow line prospects. “Look, folks are trying to compare the OLine draft as though we’re rivals, but I think we’re all really tight. I’ve gotten to know Angus [Winchester] at media events and he seriously makes me wish I had chosen Wisconsin, I got to play with Ben [Longshaw] at the Bowl Game and that was a blast. Bender is a blast to hang out with after interviews with uh...root beers; I don’t get at all why people keep saying Z. [Ronald] is going to disappear on draft night, he’s such a character guy; and Dan [Robicheaux] is amazing. I’d bet that it’s one of us from Louisiana who’s off the big board first I wouldn’t put money on which one - he’s a legend. We’re all like brothers”.
This camaraderie might be a surprise to anyone who has followed draft rumors - Floggity and LSU’s Mat Akselsen have been rumored to be feuding over which is the top Center prospect in this draft. “Well of course, fuck that guy. Shit, that’s the ‘skill position’ mentality again.” Floggity chuckles. “Seriously, no one gets to this level without a little bit of competitiveness. If we get drafted together y’all had better prepare for the spiciest Center battle in the history of football, but once the dust clears, I'm not at all concerned about losing our spots to some Tackle who isn't getting first team looks. Whichever one of us gets slotted in at Guard is still going to be playing great football”.
Before we left him to last minute draft preparation, It only seemed fair to ask Floggity to list some positives of the NSFL’s good weather conference, the ASFC - a task Floggity took on with a grin “Oh man, let’s see. The Outlaws logo is classic. There’s a reason a lot of teams fall back on that kind of branding, and Arizona gets slept on as a place to live. I’d love to live in Orange County, spend my whole contract at Disneyland and hang out on the other side of the Pacific. And San Jose has a great front office, they’ve really figured out a way to make brown work and they’re already putting thought into the fan experience. I’m going to be sweating bullets every second until I hear my name, but if it’s #1 to the Otters or #132 to...well also the Otters, I know I’m going to make that team proud”.
