I always did like reality shows. Well, certain shows. But one that always seemed to resonate with me was Gold Rush: Alaska, which has been re dubbed as 'Gold Rush' in recent seasons. Their pursuit of wealth and, well, gold was entertaining to watch, as was the witnessing of their trying to maintain personal relationships with one another in such a strenuous, profit-oriented environment.
Well, I, being a football player and being a dedicated follower of the show, decided to go and spend some time with these miners to see what this business was all about. All I can really say to preclude this, though, is that it is not what it looks like.
First of all, those camera crews are literally everywhere. I mean, everywhere. They don't care what you're doing, the only time you can have any privacy is, essentially, in your camper. They will film and record practically everything that you do, and it honestly feels somewhat invasive.
Beyond that, however, it's long and tiring work. All day, these guys are grinding away to earn a paycheck and to make a living, to bring something back to their families. They're often exhausted by the time the day is done, and even I, despite not working the hours that these guys were, started to suffer from some of that fatigue.
I can, with confidence after my experience, say that gold mining is not for everyone.
