With the NSFL's inaugural draft behind us after what felt like an eternity of waiting, we have the chance now to look back on what transpired over those nail-biting 4 hours or so and assess the draft picks before we have any right to do so. That's the professional sports way!
I asked you all to share your opinions on the likely busts of the draft. Unfortunately the opinions on the steals were a bit flaky and most people are advocating for themselves, so I'm going to give it a miss. But without further ado, here are your NSFL inaugural draft busts:
BUSTS
#1. J.J. Reigns (20% of votes)
J.J. Reigns, while not surprisingly a first round pick, did shock people by being selected first overall ahead of consensus #1 Josh Garden. Whether this has ruffled the feathers of people hoping to land at least 1 TPE from the mock drafts, or whether it's simply a case of tall poppy syndrome, we may never know. What we do know is that J.J. Reigns has been voted by the user base as the most likely to bust.
Personally, from everything I've heard about J.J., that seems unlikely. However, there may be a chance that his deep involvement in a number of previous successful sim leagues leads to burnout, and this prediction turns out to be true. Time will tell.
#2. Mayran Jackson (13.33% of votes)
When asked if there were any teams he would not like to draft him, in a pre-draft presser Mayran Jackson responded with Arizona -- the team who picked him 6th overall. This may be what leads people to believe he'll end up being a bust, at least for Arizona.
In his defense, he did say he wasn't particularly fond of playing for half the league, so it narrowed down the list of destinations he could end up at without their being some sort of media controversy. I think once Mayran hits the training field he'll be able to put his distaste for Arizona behind him and be a star.
#3. Tie: Phillipe Carter and Mark Ramiro (10% of votes)
Mark Ramiro, who was drafted in the third round at 14th overall, was an honorable mention in @SimmerDownBruhh's Top 25 Draft Prospects, meaning that while he was certainly on some people's radars, he wasn't a consensus to go in the first four rounds, let alone within three. This might be leading to people voting for him purely because they believe he was a bit of a reach.
This seems to be a similar story for Phillipe Carter, who finished at 21 in in the Top 25 but was drafted at #3 overall. That's an impressive statement. At a minimum, one GM felt he was at the very least the third best player in the entire 130+ player draft. This is probably leading those who rated him as a mid fourth round pick to shake their heads, hit the vote button and yell "reach"!
The dust has only just settled from the NSFL's inaugural draft and already people are throwing down the gauntlet. With the level of talent in the early rounds this might be a dangerous mistake, as you could be adding fuel to what is already a raging fire and leading these top picks to fulfill the destiny that GM's selected them for, rather than the one you vote for.
How will it all unfold? Who will prove us wrong and whose label will stick forever? We'll find out after another agonisingly long wait, as we count down the days until the season kicks off.
