Falling Stock
After falling to the middle of the third round in the Season 9 DSFL draft, Danny Grithead was finally drafted by the Kansas City Coyotes. Grateful for the opportunity to play professionally after attending Last Chance U, Grithead slid down the boards on draft night due to numerous character concerns on general intelligence, courtesy of his astoundingly low 4 Wonderlic score, and on his abilities on the football field, having played non-Division I football. Although Grithead has always demonstrated a top tier work ethic, a high motor, and a real sense of scrappiness to his play, GMs in the DSFL were left unimpressed.
Self-Made Chip
Given that Grithead had previously stated "Don't draft me," just days before the draft, you would not expect him to be upset about being drafted so low. But, Grithead is not like any other person, and instead took great offence to his lowly draft position, especially compared to his running back draft mates Achillies Hondo and D'Pez Poopsie, who went #2 and #3 in the DSFL draft respectively. Although Grithead was directly quoted to have said that he did not want to be drafted early, Grithead nonetheless has a huge chip on his shoulder because of his draft position even though, again, he partially created that chip. Perhaps this is Grithead's extremely low intelligence showing again. Did he maybe forget that he said that he did not want to be drafted at all, not just drafted late on? Who knows what goes on in the mind of Grithead. All that we can be certain of is that he will come into DSFL Season 9 feeling extremely disrespected and looking for revenge.
Training camp and preseason
As training camp started for the Coyotes and the coaches began to report, they were surprised to see Grithead already in the team gym in the middle of a workout. Although no one had unlocked the doors to the gym, Grithead had managed to sneak his way in through smashing a couple windows to get to the bench press. This was a real gritty first impression, and the coaches in Kansas City were both pleased and slightly disturbed by Grithead's determination to get a good workout in.
As the Kansas City players took to the field for their first practice reps, Grithead got into several fights with teammates throughout the day. While the first day of training camp is traditionally more relaxed and less physical to ease in players into the season, Grithead was going 110% every single play, bulldozing over players and being a real gym class hero. Gus Showbiz was spotted muttering the word "maniac" as Grithead hurdled over defenders giving minimal effort to chase him. Although coaches and fans will surely appreciate Grithead's dedication and work ethic come time for the regular season, his antics during the preseason and in practice may irritate his teammates and his opponents.
Now that the DSFL preseason has wrapped up its 4 games, let's take a look at Grithead's rushing statistics and game logs for the 4 games:
PS1: vs. TIJ..........10 rushes, 63 yards, 2 TD
PS2: @ POR..........14 rushes, 95 yards
PS3: vs. NOR.........9 rushes, 83 yards, 1 TD
PS4: vs. PB...........21 rushes, 89 yards, 2 TD
Grithead totaled 330 rushing yards on 54 attempts, for an average of 6.1 YPC. This is a pretty efficient start in the preseason for Grithead. Again, Grithead was giving 110% and it's doubtful that his opponents were trying as hard compared to this high motor scrappy gym rat, but the performances have been effective. Although LaMarcus Strike should continue to operate as the lead back for Kansas City this season, Grithead hopes to prove himself on the field, prove the other GMs wrong, and maybe take some high school classes this season.
