The San Antonio Marshals opened their season in a disappointing fashion, tying the under dog Palm Beach Solar Bears and taking a hard loss to the Kansas City Coyotes while on the road. Despite this, the Marshals had a wonderful performance on the field from a couple of key players with rookies and veterans alike having a great season opening two weeks. Despite not being a very productive offensive team, the Marshals didn't struggle in gaining yards and instead had issues with their capitalization. Having a receiver or a running back who can punch in balls will be a major need for them this season due to the loss of veteran Footballer Catcherman at wide receiver and full back Willy Nyquist. Now, let's review some of the top performances from the first two weeks of the season.
Marshals (23) vs. Solar Bears (23)
Week One
The San Antonio Marshals first game of the season saw them heading to south point Florida to take on the Palm Beach Solar Bears, a team that has historically posted a large number of weak performances. The Solar Bears shouldn't be overlooked though, possessing some great talent even on their currently weak roster. The game opened with a strong first drive by the Marshals less than five minutes in to secure a touchdown off a Wozy pass to Marchand. In the second quarter this was followed up by Marquise Brown punching in his first of the season. The Solar Bears replied with a field goal shortly after to end off the second half. The third quarter was all Marshals as they scored two field goals to increase their lead to seventeen points before falling apart in the early fourth by allowing a touchdown and almost immediately turning over the ball for a defensive return TD. The Marshals scored a field goal to make the score 23-17, but in the last minute of the game Palm Beach scored a touchdown off a solid pass to tie it up.
Offensive POTG - Marquise Brown
The prodigal son of San Antonio is undeniably sophomore running back Marquise Brown. Brown was a massive part of the team last season, setting team records across the board for touchdowns. He didn't disappoint in his first game back after a long off-season, taking a massive 33 attempts for 153 yards and a rushing touchdown. Brown was a key player this game, averaging just under five yards per carry through the game. Brown is a speed demon, and it was pretty obvious this game as he blew past the opposition and into the open again and again before being shut down.
Defensive POTG - William Marshall
William Marshall is a player that you most likely haven't heard a whole lot about, and that's because he's flown pretty under the radar. If you hadn't heard about him before though, you will very soon as the rookie had an amazing first performance, pushing even veteran star line backer Jesse Marchand over in nearly every major statistic. Marshall posted ten tackles, a TFL, a sack, a pass deflected, and an interception all in his first game on the roster, helping to contribute to the culture of strong defense in San Antonio. It's undoubted that his impact this season will be immense for the Marshals so look for him to be utilized constantly.
Marshals (13) vs. Coyotes (33)
Week Two
This game opened on a lot less stellar note as rookie phenomenon and first overall draft pick Kazimir Oles connected with veteran quarterback Gus Showbiz to launch Kansas City into the lead. Marquise Brown responded in the early second quarter with a touchdown of his own to tie up the score which was shortly cut in half by a Coyotes field goal. DeMarco nailed a 23 yard three pointer before Showbiz picked apart the defense and fed the ball to Vinny Valentine for his second passing touchdown of the game. The third quarter opened with two Coyotes field goals in a row as they worked up their lead before DeMarco responded by getting one of his own. Rookie Danny Grithead of the Coyotes nailed a rushing touchdown to move Kansas even more into the clear to end off the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a defensive masterpiece as the teams kept each other to only three points each before the Marshals took the loss on the road.
Offensive POTG - Zenyou Wozy
While this may appear to be a bit of a dark horse pick, for a young quarterback playing against a very strong team, Wozy had an amazing performance. Wozy threw a fairly consistent game, posting just shy of two hundred yards and going 18/28 with no touchdowns or interceptions for a decent passer rating of 85. Considering this is one of the harder teams that Wozy will play against all season, he shone on the field as a lone star. If he can play the way he did in Kansas every week, he will have no trouble being a top quarterback in no time at all.
Defensive POTG - Danny Vranos
Draft day pick up Danny Vranos has been playing exceptionally since heading to San Antonio mid draft, and this game was no exception. Vranos had a wonderful appearance putting up an astounding eight tackles while tacking on a pass deflected and interception. Without Vranos guarding the backfield, it's very likely that Oles, Valentine, and Showbiz would have completely run over the Marshals pass defense with ease. I think that Vranos can definitely be a solid contributor for years to come with San Antonio if he wants to pursue a career in football. Without question though, it is obvious that Vranos will be a massive part of any success this team sees.
