*S31 ISFL Fantasy Awards - Pvtpenne - 10-29-2021

In my article earlier today (found here: S31 ISFL Fantasy Summary - Season Recap) I mentioned some busts and some steals for the season, but I didn't really do any kind of widespread awards and I was inspired by the All-Pro teams also put out earlier today (found here: S31 ISFL All - Pro Teams). Each player can only receive a single award on this list for their position so I can talk about more players and have more users involved here. When it comes to the overall award winners, I will be wiping that rule off the table.

So what awards will I be giving out and how do I define them? Let's take a look.

Best Player: This award will simply be given to the best player in terms of raw fantasy production at each position. A completely subjective award, I will be talking a little bit about how each recipient of this award ended up on top.

Most Valuable Player (MVP): This award will be given out to the most valuable player at each position (wow, nice definition you ding dong). What does most valuable mean? I will be giving this award to the player at each position that produced the most fantasy points compared to their average draft position (ADP). There isn't really a mathematically calculation in the background of this, just me arbitrarily deciding the best fantasy points to ADP ratios.

Biggest Steal: This award will be given to the player at each position that overperformed the most compared to their ADP and pre season rankings.

Biggest Bust: This award will be given to the player at each position that underperformed the most compared to their ADP and preseason rankings.

Each of these awards will be given out to each position in fantasy (RB, WR, QB, TE, K, OL, D), as well as so let's get to these 28 award winners.

Quarterbacks:

Best Player: Mattathias Caliban  COL - 329 fantasy points, 5467 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, QB 1, ADP 28, 100% drafted

Caliban led the league in passing yards by just over 300 yards and passing touchdowns by 10 over the next highest performer. Caliban was the QB 1 on the season by nearly 65 points over the QB 2 and he was the 2nd highest fantasy scorer in the entirety of the ISFL behind Goat Tank.

MVP: Dexter Zaylren  BER - 252 fantasy points, 4476 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, QB 4, ADP 38, 18% drafted

Hmm, the QB 4 winning the MVP for QBs? Yes, but only because I can't pick Caliban here. In my article earlier today that broke down the quarterback performances and put them into tiers, the 1st tier was just Caliban and the 2nd tier was 6 QBs (Negs, Jack, Zaylren, Boss Jr, Jaroppolo Jr, Daytona) that were only separated by 20 total points. I'm picking Zaylren for my MVP because he was solidly in that tier and a solid QB to have in fantasy while also being basically free. Out of the 11 drafts I had access to, Zaylren was only drafted in 2 of those leagues and his ADP in those 2 leagues was 38. So Zaylren was available to pick up in waivers in 82% of leagues.

Biggest Steal: Ryan Negs  PHI  - 265 fantasy points, 4426 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, QB 2, ADP 39, 73% drafted

Hello there, the Negsotiator. Being a low-end QB 1 in terms of rankings and ADP, Negs' finish of QB 2 is just about as good as you can ask of him and earns him the biggest steal title as the rest of the QBs in the aforementioned tier 2 returned on their investment without much improvement on it.

Biggest Bust: Charlemagne Cortez  ARI - 228 fantasy points, 4294 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, QB 11, ADP 19, 100% drafted

Easy one here, the highest ranked and drafted QB in the league ended up in the bottom half of all QBs and was on the low end of the 3rd tier of QBs behind several mostly undrafted players.

Running Backs:

Best Player: Goat Tank  OCO - 358(!!!) fantasy points, 1586 rushing yards, 19 rushing touchdowns, 549 receiving yards, 5 receiving touchdowns, RB 1, ADP 1, 100% drafted

Goat Tank was crazy good in S31, he was 1st in rushing yards, 1st in rushing touchdowns, 7th in RB receiving yards, and T-3rd in RB receiving touchdowns. The RB 1 and overall highest scorer in terms of fantasy points, he is a dominant rusher combined with an above average receiver at the position, Goat Tank was the absolute stud of fantasy this season.

MVP: Jay Cue Jr.  YKW - 311 fantasy points, 1515 rushing yards, 16 rushing touchdowns, 461 receiving yards, 3 receiving touchdowns, RB 2, ADP 27, 82% drafted

Jay. Cue. Junior. Emphasis on junior as this guy is one of the younger starting RBs in the league but that didn't hold him back in the slightest this season. Cue more than doubled his rushing volume and tripled his rushing touchdowns. Cue was fairly lowly ranked and drafted, mainly because of his low TPE and young age relative to his competition and that's what earns him his MVP award, his low price tag to have on your team this season.

Biggest Steal: Drip Dad  COL - 227 fantasy points, 798 rushing yards, 7 rushing touchdowns, 749 receiving yards, 5 receiving touchdowns, RB 7, ADP 24, 45% drafted

How did a running back on the ISFL team that had the least rushing attempts, yards, and touchdowns end up as a borderline RB 1? Drip Dad was very very good in the receiving game this year and his borderline RB 1 finish is insane for a player drafted in less than half of leagues. He was 2nd in running back catches, 4th in running back receiving yards, and T-3rd in running back receiving touchdowns while also being top 15 in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Just imagine how great of a season Drip Dad could've had if Colorado rushed for a league average amount.

Biggest Bust: Zoe Watts  AUS - 196 fantasy points, 1110 rushing yards, 8 rushing touchdowns, 305 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown, RB 14, ADP 3, 100% drafted

Zoe Watts had a decent season for a player that you draft like the 5th or 6th round to fill in your flex spot. The only reason they take home the biggest bust award is because of the preseason expectations to be the 3rd wheel to Goat Tank and Cobra Kai. Jim the Vampire vultured a lot of work from Watts this season which must have been unexpected, Mr. Vampire even scored 5 more touchdowns than Watts on over 50 fewer touches. Maybe this was just a horrible case of touchdown luck for Watts or maybe Jim the Vampire was better suited for red zone work in Austin this season.

Wide Receivers:

Best Player: Mark Walker  YKW - 241 fantasy points, 1630 receiving yards, 13 receiving touchdowns, WR 1, ADP 19, 100% drafted

Yellowknife had a highly concentrated passing attack and Walker took over the WR 1 mantle from Kai Sakura in S31; mix those two factors together and Mark Walker was your WR 1 for fantasy on the season even though it was a close race. Walker led the league in receiving yards and was T-2nd in receiving touchdowns.

MVP: Videl-San  AUS - 236 fantasy points, 1575 receiving yards, 13 receiving touchdowns, WR 2, ADP 22, 100% drafted

Videl-San rounded out a fantastic career with another dominant season and a WR 2 finish, just 5 fantasy points short of the Best Player award. Being drafted as a mid tier WR 2 for fantasy, producing top tier numbers is what catapults Videl-San into the MVP conversation and is good enough to snag the award in their last season before retirement. videl-San was 3rd in the league in receiving yards and was T-2nd in receiving touchdowns.

Biggest Steal: Jake Fencik  PHI - 217 fantasy points, 1449 receiving yards, 12 receiving touchdowns, WR 5, ADP 35, 91% drafted

The preseason speculation about Philly's receiving core was that 1 of 3 wide receivers would break out and be fantasy relevant. That turned out to be Fencik as he was just 1 reception short of a 100 catch year, was 5th in the league in receiving yards and T-5th in receiving touchdowns. His teammates Tsuyu Asui and Killian Chambers also posted pretty good WR seasons, but it was clear Fencik was the WR 1 in Philly and that paid off for fantasy managers that invested in him.

Biggest Bust: 3-way tie!!!
Taro Raimon  ARI - 175 fantasy points, 1332 receiving yards, 7 receiving touchdowns, WR 16, ADP 14, 100% drafted
Darren Pama  ARI - 178 fantasy points, 1124 receiving yards, 11 receiving touchdowns, WR 14, ADP 14, 100% drafted
Kai Sakura  YKW - 180 fantasy points, 1378 receiving yards, 7 receiving touchdowns, WR 13, ADP 12, 100% drafted

This trio all had very similar season so I can't really differentiate and choose just 1 for this award. All 3 were drafted in the lower teens in ADP and ended up in the mid teens in terms of just wide receivers. Arizona's passing attack was just down this season compared to expectations, Pama would have won this award if not for his increased touchdown total compared to the other 2 players here. Kai Sakura was just passed on the YKW depth chart and the preseason expectations weren't taking that into account just yet.

Tight Ends:

Best Player: Zee Rechs  YKW - 133 fantasy points, 906 receiving yards, 7 receiving touchdowns, TE 1, ADP 43, 54% drafted

Zee Rechs led the league among tight ends in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in his retirement season. Leading both of those categories is an easy way to rack up the most fantasy points among tight ends. As mentioned before, a big reason for this was Yellowknife's top 5 passing attack that also happened to be highly concentrated amongst just a few targets.

MVP: James Angler  SAR  - 124 fantasy points, 875 receiving yards, 6 receiving touchdowns, TE 2, ADP 37, 36% drafted

Angler takes home the MVP award here because of the draft capital needed to have him on your team while also basically posting the premier numbers at the position. A lot of the reason Angler was drafted so low is because of his teammate and TPE leader at the tight end position, Mario Messi. Despite being the TE 2 on his own team, Angler was able to be the TE 2 in all of fantasy scoring.

Biggest Steal: James Lewandowski  NYS - 102 fantasy points, 659 receiving yards, 6 receiving touchdowns, TE 4, ADP 40, 9% drafted

A middle of the pack tight end that you can get for free off of waivers? Sure, sign me up.

Biggest Bust: Borgo San Lorenzo  PHI - 76 fantasy points, 639 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns, TE 9, ADP 30, 82% drafted

San Lorenzo's biggest killer fantasy wise was his inability to get into the endzone consistently in S 31 while being one of the more highly regarded tight ends coming into the season. If he had as many touchdowns as Lewandowski, he would've been the TE 5 on the year and a usable tight end in fantasy.

Kickers:

Best Player: Jacob Small  SAR - 175 fantasy points, 48/48 XP, 36/36 FG, 13/13 40-49, K 1, ADP 48, 100% drafted

Small was quite literally perfect this season while also getting a lot of volume in terms of kicking opportunities. Put these 2 things together and you get the highest scoring kicker in fantasy.

MVP: Jean-Jacques Leroy  AUS - 160 fantasy points, 48/48 XP, 33/42 FG, 7/8 50+, K 2, ADP 55, 73% drafted

Leroy was the most voluminous kicker in S31, and no I'm not talking about his hair. He was the only kicker to eclipse 40 field goal attempts on the year while also making them at over a 75% rate. Despite being in the bottom 3 in FG%, Leroy was still 2nd in the league in the number of field goals made because he had so many opportunities.

Biggest Steal: Freddy Bly  HON - 147 fantasy points, 37/37 XP, 32/39 FG, 17/21 40-49, K 3, ADP N/A, 0% drafted

Freddy Bly was on nobody's radar before the season but still put up top 3 numbers on the way to an Ultimus championship. He did this similar to Leroy, on the back of a ton of volume. Bly had the 2nd most field goal attempts in the league and by far the most from 40-49 yards, kicking 5 more and making 4 more than anyone else from this range.

Biggest Bust: Cade York  ARI - 130 fantasy points, 49/50 XP, 24/28 FG, 5/6 50+, K 8, ADP 44, 100% drafted

Cade York had a great season in terms of capitalizing on the opportunities he got, even flexing his accuracy at distance (2nd in the league from 50+ behind Leroy). Unfortunately since volume is king in fantasy, York's bottom 3 field goal attempts really bring him down for a kicker that was probably the first off the board and drafted in every league.

Defense:

Best Team: Austin Copperheads  AUS - 248 fantasy points, 58 sacks, 16 fumble recoveries, 20 interceptions, 3 touchdowns, D 1, ADP 47, 64% drafted

Austin led the league in picks, top 5 in sacks, top half in fumble recoveries and added 3 touchdowns on top of it; all that combined was good enough for the most fantasy points in the ISFL.

MVT: Chicago Butchers  CHI - 243 fantasy points, 62 sacks, 17 fumble recoveries, 19 interceptions, 1 touchdown, D 2, ADP 53, 18% drafted

Chicago's season was very similar to Austin, just a couple less touchdowns than Austin and that was the only real separation. Leading the league in sacks, 3rd in interceptions, top half in fumble recoveries, but just 1 touchdown was all that held Chicago back. A great season for a team defense that was very sparsely drafted. If you ended up with them on your fantasy team, you were very happy with their performance.

Biggest Steal: Baltimore Hawks  BAL - 228 fantasy points, 42 sacks, 25 fumble recoveries, 20 interceptions, 3 touchdowns, D 3, ADP 54, 9% drafted

Baltimore came out of nowhere in terms of fantasy points for defenses. The RNG kings of S31 scored so many points by leading the league in fumble recoveries by tallying 7 more than the next team, and also being T-1st in interceptions and also scoring 3 touchdowns. Despite being near the bottom of the league in sacks, the Hawks were great in fantasy and basically free to add to your fantasy team at any point.

Biggest Bust: Arizona Outlaws  ARI - 167 fantasy points, 44 sacks, 15 fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions, 0 touchdowns, D 11, ADP 40, 100% drafted

Another Arizona fantasy asset winning a biggest bust award? Not too surprising right? Arizona was bottom 5 in the league in all fantasy scoring categories in S31 while also being the highest drafted team.

Offensive Line:

Best player: Alexander Franklin  PHI - 257 fantasy points, 136 pancakes, 3 sacks allowed, OL 1, ADP 45, 91% drafted

Franklin was frying up some cakes all season long. Despite having 3 sacks allowed, which was the most among OL with top 5 pancakes, Franklin still was in a tier all his own for fantasy scoring by having 14 more pancakes than anyone else.

MVP: Marc Hamel  NYS - 239 fantasy points, 122 pancakes, 1 sack allowed, OL 2, ADP 53, 27% drafted

Hamel was 2nd in the league in pancakes and fantasy points while only having 1 sack allowed. A very good season for a player that had a very low fantasy price tag this season.

Biggest Steal: Pepelegs Johnson  BAL - 234 fantasy points, 117 pancakes, 0 sacks allowed, OL 4, ADP N/A, 0% drafted

The rookie Pepelegs went straight to the top of the leaderboards this season by being top 5 in pancakes while allowing 0 sacks. Very impressive first season for this guy and wins the biggest steal award because he was free and available on waivers in every league.

Biggest Bust: Bob Roberts  NYS  - 138 fantasy points, 69 pancakes, 0 sacks allowed, OL 25, ADP 42, 64% drafted

A highly regarded offensive lineman for fantasy coming into the season, Roberts was slotted into the NYS O-Line as a guard, severely limiting his pancake opportunities and thus his fantasy value. Roberts had a good season for a guard, but that just doesn't lead to fantasy production Hopefully the players that drafted him this season noticed this early on and picked up someone else on waivers.

Overall:

MVP: Mattathias Caliban  COL - 329 fantasy points, 5467 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, QB 1, ADP 28, 100% drafted

You were able to get the 2nd best player in fantasy in all of the ISFL in the middle rounds, not only does his draft capital propel him to win the MVP in my eyes, but so does his positional value; meaning he beat every other QB by so many points that he was insanely valuable to have this season.

Biggest Steal: Jay Cue Jr.

Cue was fairly lowly ranked and drafted, mainly because of his low TPE and young age relative to his competition and that's what earns him the biggest steal award in all of the ISFL for S31, his low price tag to have on your team this season.

A lot of running backs in the overall awards, which shouldn't be surprising considering how valuable they are in fantasy.

Hope you enjoyed my S31 fantasy awards, stay tuned for some more fantasy content.

RE: S31 ISFL Fantasy Awards - Starboy - 10-29-2021

That Chicago defense is kinda goated tbh
