The ISFL Post #4 - Swanty - 02-19-2022

Hello ISFLers!

A big congratulations to our newest champions, firstly Baltimore who staged an incredible comeback to take the S33 Ultimus, and to Norfolk who staved off a late surge from the Grey Ducks to win the S33 Ultimini! Hawks and Seawolves, keep an eye out for your forum trophies soon!

We’re now into the S34 offseason and that means fun events to look forward to. We’ve got the ISFL Draft for you S34ers, the DSFL Draft and the Prospect Bowl for our newest players, not to mention the ISFL and DSFL awards show. And all in the next two weeks!

We’ve got a few big announcements for you in this edition of the Post, so read on to find out what’s new.

HEAD OFFICE CHANGES

As we come to the conclusion of another season, we are sad to see off @dude_man and @.emfaith from ISFL HO. Dude_man has led a number of initiatives over the course of his of tenure and Ems has brought nothing but positive productivity to the team, being a super reliable presence. In their place, @woelkers and @Amidships have taken on full HO responsibilities, and are extremely dedicated, approachable and knowledgeable users that are perfect for the job. We can’t wait to have them step up to full-time HO! And replacing them, @ReverendOReily, @Opera_Phantom and @Philliesphan96 have all been hired as interns. In an amazing batch of applications that was too difficult to narrow down, we decided to hire 3 stellar candidates who all have amazing reputations for diligent work, open communication and new ideas to push the league forward.

JOB PAYMENT CHANGES

A few seasons ago, HO conducted a sweeping review with some changes to job pay. During that process, we originally came up with different ideas to take the payment scheme in this league. The idea was that there would be different “packages” that a job holder could choose, depending on their needs, such as taking their entire payment in cash, or opting to use that and convert some of the money into a PT or UW pass, depending on the job. This system was trialed and adopted by a few different departments and has been received positively, giving employees more flexibility on how they are rewarded for their work..

Going forward, all employees will be paid a base salary only. No jobs will have PT/UW passes included as standard.

Instead, employees will have the opportunity to obtain a PT pass and/or UW pass by exchanging part of the money they earn from league jobs.

Here’s how it’ll work:
  • A multiple choice poll will be available on the forums in the S34 offseason and close at the S34 Ultimus. Within that poll, users can tick whether they’d like to purchase a UW pass (for the UW at the end of the S34 season), a PT pass (for the S35 season), or both.
  • Department heads will be required to pay out their employees salaries in full before the Ultimus airs.
  • After the Ultimus, HO will collate all the money paid out from league jobs + your pass preferences and process them. That is of course if you have earned enough money that season to afford them, as only earned job money can be used to purchase passes, not money in your bank account. UW passes will cost $2M and PT passes cost $4M.
All league employees will now use this system for passes, with a couple of exceptions. Any department where the entirety of their work takes place in the offseason will have the opportunity to purchase a S34 PT pass instead of a S35 one. Department heads will collate the requests and pay them out directly, instead of using the system described above. At present, the only two departments that will use this alternative system are Events and Regression.

We’re hoping that this change addresses a number of issues with previous salary packages. Users with multiple jobs now won’t have any ‘wasted’ passes that they already own. Users who prefer to use the PT affiliate system will get paid more league money. And users can obtain UW passes as soon as possible instead of needing to wait for a full season.

And one last point, any jobs that currently have passes included will have their base salaries increased to ensure parity.

S34 PATCH

If you haven’t read this announcement yet, please do https://forums.sim-football.com/showthread.php?tid=37387. The vast majority of players will need to make adjustments to their builds, in most cases a complete rebuild from scratch is required!

To ISFL and DSFL GMs, please work with your team to make sure this gets done for all players in time for their next update (next Saturday, 26th February).

If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your GM or any member of HO.

WIKI UPDATE TASK

As older league users know, before HO ran surveys during the off-season for 5 TPE, there was the Wiki Update task, where you would update your stats table and write 150 words about your player’s season for TPE as an incentive to keep league history up to date. Well, with the diligent work of the Wiki department, we are delighted to say that this off-season, the Wiki Update task will be returning!!

Once more, since this has not happened since S27, a lot of users didn’t update their wiki page since the incentive to do so was no longer there. This is also something we would like to see rectified, and there will be a $500K payout per season updated, meaning if all 6 seasons are updated you could earn $3,000,000 for this. As we go to the off-season be aware of the opening of the Wiki Update task.

POTENTIAL STREAM CHANGES

Without the amazing work of our sim team, we would be a dot football team without a dot football presentation to show for it. Though compared to PBE, SHL and WSBL where most of our user crossover is, we are the only pre-recorded presentation that utilizes Youtube and not Twitch.

HO is hoping to explore any interest within the community to move to a live broadcast on Twitch and/or YouTube. Before making a switch of this magnitude it's important, as the community and audience for these broadcasts, that we know what is important to you in regards to game streams and potential commentary so that we can make the product the best it can be.

Making the move to live broadcasts would also require a change to the structure of our sim and stream teams. Currently, most of the burden is on simmers to enter the strats ASAP so graphics can be made and the streamer can get the games recorded and uploaded. Switching to live would make the timespan for simmers dramatically more flexible, decreasing if not eliminating the need for a graphics specialist, and shifting most of the workload onto the streamers. Currently, after recently hiring a backup streamer, we only have 3 people on our stream team. We will need to bring more users onto our streaming team to make this move possible.

With that in mind, we want to hear from users who would be interested and willing to step up to stream and commentate on live games. It is crucial that, should we decide to switch to live presentations for at least some of our games, that we are able to make a swift, smooth transition, which will require dedication from a few of our amazing users to make it possible.

SURVEY RESPONSES

With the Wiki Update Task coming back, the off-season survey will first off not occur every season, but is likely to occur every 2 or 3 seasons. Moving on, to a self-admittedly, very slow and late public review of the survey response. Firstly thank you to the 236 of you that completed this task, as we do read every single response, and some of you have received individual conversations with members of HO about your ideas, feedback or grievances included in the survey. Secondly, it is always interesting to see the differing opinions in the community, and collate a total and summary of what the major talking points are. We can see what areas or departments of the league people feel have the most issues, or see ideas that have the exact opposite statements said about them, such as twitter pay being called both too high and too low, as well as just right. It's natural to get variation, but for us, understanding where people all stand on it, is valuable in leading the community to the place it wants to be.

First thing we always look at is the now standard question, “how likely are you going to recreate?” User retention is just as important as user recruitment, if not more as it shows the league is enjoyable and a community people want to remain in. Right under 56% of people answered yes, 36% of people answered undecided, whilst 8% said no. The S32 survey had 53% saying they would recreate, so that number has slightly increased, but it is easy to see there are a lot of people who could be swayed either way, and it is important that we do everything we can as the Head Office of the league, to encourage and foster a place they will choose to recreate and stay.

Next, whilst departments got their specific feedback to take on board, here is a summary of some main talking points from multiple users  out of the departments and feedback we are looking at the ability to implement changes based on the feedback received

- Head Office - Promote jobs and departments better, outlining the jobs clearer and make vacancies more accessible. Increasing communication and transparency. Address the decline in recruitment.
- Twitter department - Only having to post your twitter handles once instead of every season,
- PPT Team - Work on the PT Prompts, have more off-field/character driven prompts, open-ended prompts, less research. Ideas around having two written prompts, one for stats and one for character/lore/creative writing. (Note. There is a thread for suggesting PT/UW prompts - https://forums.sim-football.com/showthread.php?tid=9205&page=7)
- Sim team - streams could be more engaging (Read above about potential sim changes)
- Graphics Team - Grade graphics faster, especially when end of season looms
- Recruitment - Be more careful to ensure recruitment days aren’t occurring the same time as a major event

Of course, this doesn’t encompass the entirety of the feedback we received, but these are the departments and feedback that were most commonly noted, and therefore the forefront of what will be looked at. Hopefully you will see some changes coming in for S34, whilst others will hopefully be worked out throughout the season. Finally, we always appreciate the honesty in these surveys, it is just one way however you can voice your opinions to HO. You are always free to contact any member of HO via discord or even the forum, or pass it through your GM if you prefer, or use the Suggestion Box section on the forum (found here - https://forums.sim-football.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=34) to publicly state your idea. Your feedback is invaluable to helping us run this league as smoothly as possible.

RE: The ISFL Post #4 - infinitempg - 02-19-2022

Re: wiki task, if you recreated in between now and S27, do you get the monetary bonus by updating both your old player and new player?

edit to add:

re: live streaming instead of pre-recording, part of the reason we switched to pre-recording was it made streamer life more flexible (ie, not having to be available at 8PM three times a week). obviously with more streamers then people would only need to book 1 night a week, and with the switch back to live the simmer's life will be a lot easier - so perhaps it's a good idea to go back to live and twitch.

the advent of in-stream graphics arose naturally out of the fact that the games were pre-streamed, as me (and later the great Colabear) figured it'd be cool to include them. i don't necessarily think the graphics are super important? it all started with me putting the scores on a fake ticker at the bottom of the sim, which isn't impossible to continue doing but would require a bit of technical expertise.

as for twitch vs youtube - one of the biggest reasons we switched to YT besides pre-recording was that we would have an archive that never got auto-deleted. we used to have someone download the video from twitch to upload back to YT afterwards but that was a job that was oft-forgot and left us missing many past events. i don't know if twitch changed their settings or we would want to bring this job back, but that's my biggest fear. that being said, I don't know if twitch allows us to have PIP video on iphone and that's been a big annoyance to me when trying to watch YT on mobile while chatting in discord. twitch is also probably the more appropriate spot for live streaming games anyways and the chat might be more interesting on twitch? also bring back music bot lol

RE: The ISFL Post #4 - dude_man - 02-19-2022

Thank you @Swanty and the rest of HO for welcoming in one of the "greenest" people in regards to Sim Leagues. You have made a tremendous impact to me with ISFL and beyond. I look forward to continue working together within other leagues and also here.

With that being said...

HO is also open to the idea of being able to move stream times to accommodate streamers that can't do 8pm EST. But also yes, if we could have a bigger stable of streamers that would help significantly.

Yeah this would be great to know!

RE: The ISFL Post #4 - Kyamprac - 02-20-2022

Graphics still make up part of live streams depending on how its set up. PBE has a team dedicated to this (could just combine it with events gfx and pay salary/per image for it).

Nice HO hires and good to see things movin' and shakin'.

RE: The ISFL Post #4 - Baron1898 - 02-20-2022

I don't have anything original to say but I'd like to second infinite's point about Twitch's auto-deletion. If we decide to move live streams back to Twitch, saving those streams absolutely has to be a priority.

RE: The ISFL Post #4 - Raven - 02-21-2022

Regarding saving vods. Pretty sure you can highlight the entite vod, which should save it indefinitely on the channel.

Yeah this would be great to know!

@infinitempg so you get the tag

If you spent like s27-s29 on one player, than s30 onwards with a second, you would still be having things to update and should get paid. The only situation I would not be sure if you would be paid is if since it stopped, if you would get it if you had a player in both seasons (say corpse season in s29 and were an s30 create so in DSFL). At most, that is a 500K swing, S27-29 can be old player, and S30 onwards new player, would be paid out.

So Wolfie stopped playing in S26, meaning the S27 offseason update would still qualify for him? Obviously I'm asking for me but I'm sure someone else is in the same boat.
