*A Full History of 1oa Picks - zaynzk - 08-20-2023

The First Pick In the Draft is a pick desired by any struggling team across all sports, and ISFL is no exception, the allure of the first pick is one that gives the promise of both a max earning player who can help change the fortune of the team they are on and can help lead a team into a new era. However this is not always the case. Today I will be looking at all the first overall picks in ISFL history and see how they ended up.

OCO  S1: The Orange County Otters Select: DL JJ Reigns  OCO
Starting off with the first ever season we have a player by the name of JJ Reigns, from the user @Shaka, who started off on the Defensive Line before moving to the WR position. Reigns started off strong with a 14 sack season in year one which got him into his only pro bowl, however this was his only real season of good stats, he was a part of OCOs first ever Ultimus win in Season 4 before spending time on the Yeti and Second Line. Overall despite some positive moments he was a clear bust of a first ever pick in the ISFL (NSFL). He also Earned only 168 TPE in his career which adds to this

YKW  S2: The Yellowknife Wraiths Select: CB Dermot Levelle  YKW

While the S1 first overall pick was a pretty big bust, Dermot Levelle was on the opposite end of the spectrum. From the user @White Cornerback, who himself proved his worth as a 1oa pick as he served time as both Commissioner of the NSFL and as GM of the Wraiths between S9->S13. Dermot was also an elite earner, I believe holding the TPE Record at one point with 1363 TPE, is a HOF Player and is the undisputed GOAT Cornerback. He spent his entire glorious 13 year career in Yellowknife, winning a pro bowl spot in every single season and winning DPoTY in S9. He Helped the Wraith win their first ever Ultimus in S8. He still owns countless all time record, with the most Notable being his 57 Interceptions, which is a mark that no one has even gotten close to in the Decades since his retirement. Dermot Levelle is most likely the greatest 1oa pick of all time

COL S3: The Colorado Yeti Select: DL Antonio Sandoval  COL

From one former GM to another, Unfortunately this one does not have as happy as a story as the last 1oa pick. The User behind Antonio Sandoval was @TheMemeMaestro, who GM’d the Yeti for a horrible period between S3->S8 and is widely considered one of the worst GMs ever. As a player Sanoval is a mixed bag. On one hand he was a three time pro bowler and won DLoTY in S10, however on the other hand he only peaked at 397 TPE which is pretty low especially considering he did not retire early or anything. Sandoval is not the worst 1oa pick but is certainly one that had a lasting impact on the Yeti

ARI S4: The Arizona Outlaws Select: LB Noah Goodson ARI

Goodson, who was a creation of user @toivo owns the distinction of being the first ever 1oa pick to win Rookie of the year. He also owns a different distinction, being the first ever 1oa pick to leave his team on a rookie contract, and he did so the first moment he could. He actually posted a media expressing his desire to leave arizona and join the Baltimore Hawks in Free Agency (https://forums.sim-football.com/showthread.php?tid=7444) for the curious. This decision must have made alot more sense at the time, considering after his first season the Arizona Multi Scandal Happened which changed the makeup of the team. Other then that he had an up an down career, he peaked between 500 and 600 tpe (tpe tracker is a bit off) which either way seems a bit low for someone taken with 1oa but not as bad as ⅔ of the last picks so fair enough, and won the Ultimus with Baltimore in S10. He was a two time pro bowl

COL  S5: The Colorado Yeti Select: TE Carlito Crush  COL

Carlito Crush is the 2nd HOF player we have seen that went 1oa so far, from user @JKortesi81, Crush was a dominant player who made 7 Pro Bowls and Won back to back Ultimus’ in S10 and S11, he is also the first 1oa pick who won MVP. Unfortunately for the Yeti none of these achievement happened while he was a member of the Yeti. Although he was traded instead of leaving on a free, https://forums.sim-football.com/showthread.php?tid=8506&highlight=Carlito+Crush
(some more media https://forums.sim-football.com/showthread.php?tid=7791,  and https://forums.sim-football.com/showthread.php?tid=8736, if u wanna see some of his reasoning for wanting to leave. On OCO he won basically everything he could win, and outside of a S10 season he spent on NOLA where he won an Ultimus before coming back to help OCO do the same, he spent the rest of his career in Orange County.

NOLA  S6: The New Orleans Second Line Select: LB Brian Mills  NOLA

Brain Mills is the third HOF player on this list, and also has the distinction of being the first player drafted officially to the New Orlean Second Line after they moved from Las Vegas. User @PaytonM34 was a huge part of the culture change that turned them into a winning franchise. Mills was a 5 time pro bowler who spent 6 years in Nola were he won the Ultimus in S9 and S10. he spent some time in Colorado and on Baltimore, and Helped the Hawks win an Ultimus in S15, bringing his total to 3 Rings.

COL  S7: The Colorado Yeti Select: WR Howard Miller  COL

The Third Time the Yeti have shown up on this list, however Miller is probably the one that worked out the best for the Yeti so far, user @dropbear GM’d the Yeti between S10->S14 to mixed results, however his player Miller was a different beast. He was a 5 time Pro Bowler for the Yeti, and won Returner of the Year twice and won MVP in S11 which makes him the 2nd player to have won MVP on this list. He spent his last season on Baltimore after a trade, (he is listed as winning a Ultimus in S15 with baltimore but i believe that was due to him randomly playing a game in S15 despite being retired). Overall Miller was a pretty dominant player for the Yeti.

COL S8: The Colorado Yeti Select: LB Rickey Romero  COL

Romero from user @Ramero seems to be a pretty obvious bust, no awards or anything, he reached around 500 TPE before going Inactive. The most interesting thing of note was he suspiciously returned to activity for a little bit after getting traded to OCO, however considering his peak was 540 TPE it clearly did not do too much.  He was however a part of the S12 and S13 Ultimus runs with OCO.

SJS S9: The San Jose Sabercats Select: WR Xavier Flash  SJS

Xavier Flash from user @Leafs4ever seemed to be a decent player for San Jose, going to 3 Pro Bowls in his time, and peaking above 1k TPE, while not being a elite player he seemed to be one of the better WR in the league during his time and helped the Sabercats win their first ever Ultimus in S14. He retired after a short spell in Yellowknife

SJS S10 The San Jose Sabercats Select FB D’Pez Poopsie  SJS

Poopsie was a player owned by @Muford and instantly seemed to swap to defensive positions (it seemed like he became a CB then turned into a DE) Poopsie was an 6 time pro bowler who like the S9 1oa pick helped SJS win the Ultimus in S14. after 6 years on SJS he ended up moving too Chicago for their first few seasons before ending his career after 3 seasons in baltimore

PHI S11: The Philadelphia Liberty select S Lennox Garnett  PHI

Garnett was the 4th HOF player who was picked 1oa. He was the creation of user @37thchamber who also managed the Liberty for 4 seasons. Garnett was an 8 time pro bowlers in his time at the liberty, and spent his entire career with them. He is still 7th all time in career interceptions.

SJS  S12: The San Jose Sabercats Select DL Freezer Riposte  SJS

Riposte is the 3rd SJS Player who was both selected 1oa and who was a part of the S14 Ultimus Run. From user @Mavfatha, Riposte was a 3 time pro bowler who spent the majority of his career with the Sabercats (spending one season with the Expansion Sailfish before retiring
YKW  S13: The Yellowknife Wraiths Select CB Johnny Snuggles   YKW

The 5th HOF Player who was Selected 1oa, Johnny Snuggles was the first player of future owner of the ISFL Site @manicmav36, Snuggles is surprisingly only the 2nd Rookie of the year on our list so far. He also was a 5 time pro bowlers and helped the Wraiths make 5 Ultimus, winning one of them in S23, before riding off into the sunset

YKW  S14: The Yellowknife Wraiths Select QB Cooter Bigsby   YKW

The 6th HOF Player on our list and the First QB who went 1oa in ISFL History, Bigsby is one of the best Quarterbacks of all time, who like Snuggles won the Ultimus in S23 before riding off into the sunset. Bigsby who was run by another legendary user in @timeconsumer was the offensive rookie of the year, a 7 time pro bowler who won MVP Two times making him the first 1oa pick to win multiple MVPs (spoiler alert he was also the only one)

ARI S15: The Arizona Outlaws select WR Brock Landers  ARI

Landers was the first player from @gucci, and had a strong start to his career, with him making the pro bowl in his first two seasons as an Outlaw and helping them win the Ultimus in S16, in which Gucci was also one of the GMs of. However after that season it all went downhill for him, he seemed to have gone IA and his stats fell off hard too spending only 3 more seasons in arizona before a one year stop in Baltimore.

CHI S16: The Chicago Butcher Select RB Sam Torenson  CHI

The 5th HOF player on this list, and the first one who was still playing in the league when I personally joined, Torenson was @Jonny2x player, and he was someone I was personally surprised to see been part of a team other then Philly. He had two great seasons in Chicago, where he won Rookie of the year and RBoTY twice before getting traded to Philadelphia (https://forums.sim-football.com/showthread.php?tid=15676), this is a very confusing move to me as he seemed to be a good earning young player and from other media from the time it seems like he didnt force a move or anything, it was just something that happened to bring a Aging HOF RB into the team. On Philly he managed to make the pro bowl 6 more times bringing his total to 8 and he currently still is 3rd all time in yards. Chicagos Loss was Phillys gain

AUS S17: The Austin Copperheads Select: RB Ashley Owens  AUS

Back to back RBs who both went 1oa and left their team after 2 seasons. Owens who was run by @run_CMC is also the 6th HOF Player who went 1oa. Unlike Torenson however Owens decided to hit free agency, and ended up joining the Yeti where he made four pro bowls and won the Ultimus in S22 which was the first in Yeti History, Owens then ended up joining the Expansion New York Silverbacks where he broke the all purpose yard record and won OPoTY. Owens is currently 2nd all time in All Purpose Yards.

NOLA S18: The New Orleans Second Line Select DT Bjørn Ironside NOLA

Bjørn Ironside was a decent player, however user @IsaStarcrossed became the GM of the 2nd Line between S22->S23 and decided to retire his player and recreate during this time, unfortunately that means Ironside only played 4 seasons in the ISFL. However, He was a part of the Second Line winning the Ultimus in S21 and had a pro bowl in in S20

NOLA S19: The New Orleans Second Line Select LB Mack Arianlacher NOLA

Arianlacher, who was the player of @LordMacharius was also a part of the Ultimus winning NOLA team, however just like Ironside he was not on the team for long, he was selected by the Hahalua in the expansion draft were he spent three seasons before spending a season in austin before retiring after a 2 year stint in Yellowknife (in which he did win his second Ultimus). Mack won DRoTY, but retired with 0 pro bowls.

AUS S20: The Austin Copperheads select DE Kyle Idlewyld AUS

Kyle Idlewyld aka CarolinaBBQ IsBest was the creation of user @Kyle, who became the Austin GM between S26->S29. As a player Idlewyld/IsBest was a three time pro bowler and helped Austin win their first ultimus in his rookie year. He like Ironside, retired early to recreate as a different position, however theres certainly more of a “what could have been” with how hot the start of his career was

OCO S21: The Orange County Otters Select S Prince Vegeta OCO

Vegeta was the player of @jeffie43 and was a good player for the otters. Jeffie became the Otters GM for three seasons between S24->S26, as a player Vegeta was a three time pro bowler and won a SoTY for the otters and spent his entire career in Orange County.

AUS S22: The Austin Copperheads select CB Colt Mendoza AUS

During the Covid class the Copperheads traded up for Colt Mendoza aka @iStegosauruz. Mendoza spent four seasons in Austin before a trade to The New York Silverbacks. Mendoza was a 5 time pro bowler and a two time all pro during his time in New York, and helped the Silverback win their first and second Ultimus

COL S23: The Colorado Yeti Select S Greedy Sly COL

Another player who played only a few seasons before retiring due to being a GM, @Sylphreni was the GM of the Yeti between S25->S30. As a player Sly was a two time pro bowler after he swapped to OL.

CHI  S24: The Chicago Butcher Select LB Juan Domine   CHI

The 7th HOF player selected 1oa, and the first one to spend his entire career at the team that drafted him in a decade. Domine, who was the creation of @Yeenoghu was a 4 time pro bowler and three time All Pro, and won DPoTY in S31.

BER S25: The Berlin Fire Salamanders Select CB: Swantavius Jones  BER

The Future Commish of the ISFL @Swanty was selected 1oa in his original draft. Swantavius was the first pick by the new expansion Fire Salamanders, and rewarded his new franchise with 4 Pro Bowl Appearances and 3 all Pro selections. Swantavius spent his entire career in Germany and helped established them as a team

BER  S26: The Berlin Fire Salamanders Select LB: BamBam McMullet  BER

The 8th HOF player who was taken 1oa, and the first user in @manicmav36 to go 1oa in two separate drafts. McMullet spent 10 seasons in Berlin in which he was a 5 time pro bowlers and 4 time all pro, before spending two seasons in San Jose before retiring after a season in New York. McMullet Retired as the third highest sack getter

HON S27: The Honolulu Hahalua Select: WR Eleven Kendrick-Watts   HON

The Hahalua selected user @124715 with the first overall pick in S27, and he helped them win 3 Ultimus’. Kendrick-Watts was a two time pro bowler for the Hahalua, and spent his entire career with the team.

BAL S28: The Baltimore Hawks Select: WR Luke Quick BAL

The Hawks Picked Quick whose user is @Bigred83 with their one overall pick and was a consistent receiver in his time, who finished 11th all time in yards, but surprisingly only had one all pro season, Quick did help the Hawks won the Ultimus and spent his entire career with the Hawks

BAL S29: The Baltimore Hawks Select RB Dante King BAL

The Hawks spend their second 1oa pick in a row on Dante King, from the user @shadyshoelace, King was also part of the Hawks S33 Ultimus run and is currently first in all purpose yards all time. King was also a 4 time pro bowler for the hawks and spent his entire career with the hawks

BAL S30: The Baltimore Hawks Select LB Sheriff Woody BAL

The Hawks Pick Sheriff Woody with this pick, from user @TomHanks and he was also a part of their S33 Ultimus Run, Woody was a 4 time all pro selection and a 1 time pro bowler, and is 6th all time in career sacks, Woody spent 9 seasons on baltimore before spending one year in New Orleans and retiring

BAL S31: The Baltimore Hawks Select DE Morpheus Czargyros BAL

The Hawks had one overall again and selected Czargyros from @captjanko, he was another member of the Hawks Ultimus run in S33, and spent 6 seasons in baltimore before getting traded to the Second Line were he spent three seasons before retiring, Czargyros was a one time pro bowler and one time all pro

BAL S32: The Baltimore Hawks Select TE: Lenard Graf BAL

Not going to lie but I did not realize the Hawks had 5 first round picks in a row, but like the last 4 picks Graf was a part of the S33 Ultimus run and was a 5 time pro bowlers and three time all pro, he spent 6 seasons in baltimore before retiring after a season in New York. User @Trempale was also the GM of the Hawks for 8 seasons between S34->S40

OCO S33: The Orange County Otters Select DE: Leonardo McTurtle OCO

The First 1oa pick in over a decade to leave their team in Free Agency and the first player we encounter thats still playing today. From user @KaleSalad McTurtle played 4 seasons in Orange County before leaving to join Arizona in Free Agency. McTurtle is a 2 time pro bowlers and 1 time all pro team member, but also won 4 Ultimus during his time in arizona

COL S36: The Colorado Yeti Select CB Graham Harper  COL

From user @PurpleReign, Harper was selected 1oa by the Yeti and he spent about 4 years on the team, before getting traded to SJS where he remains today. He does not currently have any accolades

BER S37: The Berlin Fire Salamanders Select: CB Charlie Thorsen BER

From User @Amidships the Fire Salamanders select Thorsen with their pick and he currently still plays for them. He Currently has 0 accolades

The Copperheads select user @MikeWhiskey with their first overall pick, and he is currently still on Austin. He has so far gotten one pro bowl selection in S40

-currently the GM of the New York Silverbacks

NOLA S42: The New Orleans Second Line Select Dino Nuggets @swoosh NOLA

ARI S43: The Arizona Outlaws Select Thomas Sutha @lemonoppy ARI

Times Owning 1oa:
Colorado Yeti: 7 Times
Baltimore Hawks: 5 Times
New Orleans Second Line: 4 Times
Austin Copperheads: 4 Times
Berlin Fire Salamanders: 3 Times
Orange County Otters: 3 Times
San Jose SaberCats: 3 Times
Yellowknife Wraiths: 3 Times
Arizona Outlaws: 3 Times
Honolulu Hahalua: 3 Times
Chicago Butchers: 2 Times
Philadelphia Liberty/Cape Town Crash: 2 Times
New York Silverbacks: 1 Time
Sarasota Sailfish: 0 Times

With a relatively small sample size my observations are likely not 100% going to hold up with a few coming drafts but i made some generalizations about each team

OCO Orange County Otters: OCO

Mixed Results: The Otters' first overall picks have experienced mixed results, with a mix of successes and underperforming players.

Building Blocks: Their picks have contributed to team successes (not always their own) like Ultimus wins, but they haven't consistently produced Hall of Fame-caliber players.

YKW Yellowknife Wraiths: YKW
High Achievers: The Wraiths have had standout first overall picks who became dominant players and all have achieved Hall of Fame status.
Loyal and Good: All Of Their 3 1oa picks have all played long careers and never left for another team

COL Colorado Yeti: COL
Inconsistent Impact: The Yeti's first overall picks have ranged from impactful players like Howard Miller to others with more inconsistent careers.
Mixed Role in Success: Some of their picks have played key roles in the team's Ultimus win, but not all have achieved individual greatness.

ARI Arizona Outlaws:  ARI
Messy: The Outlaws' early first overall picks had mixed success, with short time players who went IA or who left for other teams.
Uncertain Trajectories: With fewer picks in the analysis, the Outlaws' trajectory is still forming, and future picks might shape their legacy more.

NOLA New Orleans Second Line: NOLA
Turnaround Contributors: Some of their picks, like Brian Mills, have played crucial roles in turning around the Second Line's fortunes.
Mixed Results: While Mills succeeded, others like Ironside and Arianlacher had shorter careers with fewer accolades.

SJS San Jose Sabercats:  SJS
Steady Contributors: Sabercats' first overall picks have generally been steady contributors, with multiple Pro Bowl appearances contributed to their Ultimus win.
Positional Diversity: The Sabercats have selected players from different positions, maintaining a balanced approach in their picks.

CHI Chicago Butcher: CHI

Elite Preformers: 2 for 2 in HOF player, however Sam Torenson's career trajectory was positively affected by a trade to Philadelphia, where he achieved greater success.

CTC Cape Town/Philadelphia Liberty: PHI

Hall of Fame High: The Liberty have successfully picked Lennox Garnett who achieved Hall of Fame status and set records.
Hall of Shame Low. On The Other hand the Liberty have also picked someone who was nowhere close to a positive

AUS Austin Copperheads:  AUS

Consistent Selections: The Copperheads have consistently chosen impactful players, contributing to multiple Ultimus wins (not always their own) and strong performances.
Right Players Wrong Time?: Some players like Ashley Owens and Colt Mendoza found success after leaving the Copperheads, contributing to other teams' victories.

HON Honolulu Hahalua: HON

Strong Performers: The Hahalua's picks have generally been strong performers, contributing to team successes and recognition, despite not wining to much in terms of individual awards
Future Potential: With recent picks, the trajectory of the Hahalua's legacy is still unfolding, and they might establish a more distinct pattern over time.

BER Berlin Fire Salamanders:  BER
Versatile Picks: The Fire Salamanders have chosen players who achieved recognition both as players and in administrative roles. With all three being involved in league management
Early Success: The Salamanders' picks have contributed to the team's success, even in the early stages of the team's ISFL journey.

NYS New York Silverbacks: NYS
Emerging Legacy: With only one recent pick analyzed, the Silverbacks' first round trajectory is still forming, and has to define their legacy further.
BAL Baltimore Hawks:  BER
Ultimus Champions: The Hawks' picks have consistently contributed to team successes, with a Ultimus win and strong careers.
Collective Effort: The Hawks' first overall picks have collectively shaped the team's legacy however none of them really stand out as a truely dominant HOF level player

SAR Sarasota Sailfish: SAR
Unique: The Sailfish stand out for never having held the first overall pick in the ISFL draft.

Some More General Thoughts

Positional Diversity: While certain positions like cornerback, linebacker, and wide receiver(which surprised me) have been popular choices for the first overall pick, there's still a diversity of positions represented. This is pretty dope to see as we have a solid mix of different positions going 1oa.

Hall of Fame Potential: A slarge group of first overall picks has gone on to achieve Hall of Fame status, becoming dominant forces in their positions and leaving a lasting impact on the league's history. I feel like while this number is low its honestly a high percentage as 1oa picks compared to other picks (i refuse to back this up with data its all vibes)

Team Impact: The first overall pick's success is often tied to team achievements, including Ultimus wins. Successful picks tend to contribute significantly to team victories and league championships and Multiple 1oa picks tend to often lead to a Ultimus win.

Longevity and Career Trajectories: The length of a player's career and their impact can vary widely. However there was a big trend in the S20s of a 1oa pick becoming a GM then retiring their player early, which has since seemed to have gone out of fashion (also less 1oa picks have ended up becoming GMs since that time so maybe its that)

Team Identity: Each team's approach to selecting first overall picks and the subsequent impact on their trajectory helps define the team's identity and competitive strategy.

Realism: The varied outcomes and trajectories of first overall picks mirror the unpredictability of real sports drafts, demonstrating the realism of the ISFL simulation. Every so often we get 1oa Picks who disappoint and its interesting how the ISFL is able to capture that aswell

Very cool article idea. S25 continues to produce the greatest content for this league
