*ISFL Dominator Power Rankings - caleb.grim - 11-26-2023

Hello everyone! With the start of the season coming up tomorrow, it's time to begin the weekly Dominator Power Rankings again! Of course, we are always looking to improve processes from before and I will look into adding a strength of schedule component to the Dominator Score this season. More details will follow once I get that up off the ground next week.

For now, I had to come up with a new method to calculate power rankings before any games have been played. So what better way than to look at TPE for each team! I will explain the process below but you are also welcome to jump straight to the rankings!

(As an aside, I will only be continuing the ISFL portion of this series for the season. If anyone is interested in taking over the idea for the DSFL, go ahead!)

How the Preseason Dominator Score is Calculated

In order to come up with a score, I took a look at three categories: the TPE of the top 11 offensive players, the TPE of the top 11 defensive players, and the TPE of the quarterback.

The offense TPE was the sum of the quarterback, the top 5 TPE offensive skill positions, and the five offensive lineman. In the case of teams not having a full human o-line, a score of 350 was given for each bot. This number was chosen for two reasons. First, 350 is the median TPE tier for purchasing o-line bots and second, this matches up with information I received from multiple GMs when I was still on offensive lineman as to the amount of TPE I would need in order to start playing in the ISFL.

The defensive TPE was the sum of the top 11 TPE defensive players as long as it followed some restrictions. Each team had to field either 4 or 5 defensive backs and a minimum of 3 defensive lineman. This was my best approximation of the 11 defensive players that would be on the field most often for each team.

Lastly, I also considered the TPE of each team's quarterback independently as well.

While raw TPE is one of our measures of how skilled a player is, there is a point where more TPE doesn't actually increase the skill of the player. (More on this in a future media piece!) While this cap is different for each archetype, the amount of TPE that a player can contribute does stop at that value (this is between 1165 and 1355). So a player with over 1500 TPE (I'm looking at you @dude_man), only contributes up to their archetype cap.

With each of these scores calculated, I standardized each TPE total separately (I know, small sample size and probably not normally distributed but it works for what I want it to do!) A teams preseason Dominator Score was then the sum of these three z-scores. To take it a step further, if each team's sum was rounded to the nearest whole number, that became my prediction on how many games above or below .500 a team will finish this year. (With a slight adjustment to get records to come out correctly.)

Onto the rankings!

ISFL Preseason Dominator Power Rankings

14. YKW Yellowknife Wraiths YKW
Offense Rating: -0.42 (9th)
Defense Rating: -1.34 (13th)
QB Rating: -2.00 (14th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: -3.75

Projected Record: 4-12 (7th Place in NSFC)

Breaking in a new rookie quarterback is never easy and with a defense that is projected to be near the bottom of the ISFL, wins may be few and far between for the Wraiths. The worst record in the ISFL is not out of the question.

Stars to Watch:
DT Mo Gago (@FTR)
RB Money Tolliver (@jeffie43)
CB Kadarius Claypool II (@Weaves)
OL Dusty Wilson (@dustywilson22)

13. NOLA New Orleans Secondline NOLA
Offense Rating: -1.82 (14th)
Defense Rating: -0.69 (12th)
QB Rating: -1.17 (12th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: -3.67

Projected Record: 4-12 (7th Place in ASFC)

While the Secondline have spent the past few years in the cellar, and this prediction isn't that different, a projected 4 wins would be a recent season high a sign that things are improving. If the defense can continue to improve, New Orleans may be able to sneak a few extra wins this season.

Stars to Watch:
CB Apollo Program (@Modern_Duke)
CB Ezra Azazel (@"baz1757")
LB Bruce White (@toofpete)
RB Kyle Crane (@Ultimatedestroye)

12. SJS San Jose SaberCats SJS
Offense Rating: -1.32 (13th)
Defense Rating: 0.23 (6th)
QB Rating: -0.91 (11th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: -2.00

Projected Record: 6-10 (6th Place in the ASFC)

The SaberCats have some solid pieces on defense and will be looking to keep games close and pull off a few more upsets this season. Another team with a young QB will be looking for marked impovement in year 2.

Stars to Watch:
CB Brooks Piggott (@ckroyal92)
DE Alex Armstrong (@Duilio05)
LB Cruella de Ville (@Exilizer)
LB DJ Maclean (@Urq660)

11. CHI Chicago Butchers CHI
Offense Rating: -0.84 (12th)
Defense Rating: -1.72 (14th)
QB Rating: 0.92 (4th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: -1.64

Projected Record: 6-10 (6th Place in the NSFC)

The Butchers are the opposite of most teams low on this list. They have a proven quarterback but the rest of their roster is lacking in high TPE players in comparison to other teams. Will they be able to improve on past season's records on the back of their quarterback?

Stars to Watch:
QB Painted Penguin (@Painted)
S Rico Savage (@TheRake)

10. COL Colorado Yeti COL
Offense Rating: -0.64 (10th)
Defense Rating: -0.35 (11th)
QB Rating: 0.17 (8th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: -0.82

Projected Record: 7-9 (5th Place in the NSFC)

The Yeti project to be a team right in the middle that doesn't really make much noise. Though it's not hard to envision things crumbling this season as they are in the bottom half of the league in all three metrics.

Stars to Watch:
LB Waylen Greene (@fnordypsyduck)
S Mary Marie (@aeonsjenni)
QB Wolfie McDummy Jr. (@infinitempg)
LB Donte Darius (@Void_DCXI)
WR NCADV RAINN (@IsaStarcrossed)

9. AUS Austin Copperheads AUS
Offense Rating: 0.54 (6th)
Defense Rating: 0.60 (4th)
QB Rating: -1.29 (13th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: -0.14

Projected Record: 8-8 (5th Place in the ASFC)

The Copperheads have seemingly every piece in place to complete for an Ultimus except for quarterback. Am I overvaluing the importance of quarterback for this team? I just can't envision a return to the playoffs without star power at the quarterback position for this squad.

Stars to Watch:
S Geralt (@.Laser)
DT Carly Rae Jensen (@unconfident)
RB Howard Coward (@JKortesi81)
LB Tank McGibbons (@MikeWhiskey)
LB Mario Moloka'i (@124715)
WR Delores Bickerman (@Kyamprac)
RB Jeff Newman (@Lumosityfan)

8. SAR Sarasota Sailfish SAR
Offense Rating: -0.65 (11th)
Defense Rating: -0.24 (9th)
QB Rating: 0.95 (3rd)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: 0.06

Projected Record: 8-8 (4th Place in the NSFC)

The Sailfish were an interesting team last year full of close games and dramatic finishes. With some star players but not a lot of depth, a repeat of earning the title of "Sensational Sailfish" should be at play for another season.

Stars to Watch:
QB Willier Miller (@Sebster)
CB Fronky Fresh (@Fronk)
WR Johnny Blaze Jr. (@JBLAZE_THE_BOSS)
LB Max Honestly (@Sizz)

7. BER Berlin Fire Salamanders BER
Offense Rating: -0.18 (8th)
Defense Rating: 0.63 (2nd)
QB Rating: -0.10 (9th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: 0.35

Projected Record: 9-7 (3rd Place in the NSFC)

With their offense being middle of the pack, the Fire Salamanders will need the defense to live up to expectations in order to reach the playoffs. It looks like Berlin is banking on the old adage of "Defense Wins Championships".

Stars to Watch:
S Diggs Sideline-touchdown (@Dewalt27)
DE GOAT TANNK (@Eldorian)
DE Clint Mustache (@manicmav36)
CB Charlie Thorsen (@Amidships)
WR Emile Charles (@Number 82)
TE Nick Williams (@nickWilliams)

6. NYS New York Silverbacks NYS
Offense Rating: -0.04 (7th)
Defense Rating: -0.14 (8th)
QB Rating: 1.15 (T-1st)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: 0.96

Projected Record: 9-7 (4th Place in the ASFC)

The Silverbacks are going to test to see how important human o-lineman really are. Their offense is stacked at QB and all skill positions but they have two sub 250 TPE human o-lineman with three bots. In a stacked ASFC, I have them on the outside looking in come playoff time.

Stars to Watch:
RB Frank Dux (@ComebackZak)
QB Blaine Falco (@Tayjay)
S Loose Cannon (@Jumbo)
DT Dub Redd (@wizard_literal)
DT Lionel Scrimmage (@Mojojojo)
WR Sean Robinson (@18situaseans)
WR Matthew Mara (@High Stick King)

5. CTC Cape Town Crash CTC
Offense Rating: 0.99 (3rd)
Defense Rating: -0.28 (10th)
QB Rating: 0.26 (7th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: 0.97

Projected Record: 9-7 (2nd Place in the NSFC)

The Crash will look for a high powered offense to help lead them back to the Ultimus to revenge their loss to the Hahalua. Look for more high scoring games for the Crash this season similar to their Ultimus defeat.

Stars to Watch:
RB Nakiri Ayame (@ValorX77)
WR Kairo Knight (@Akoustique)
QB Creg Jerrith IV (@negs)
LB Rolud Onyxgut (@crash1005)
CB Legs McMillion (@jollyjiggs)

4. OCO Orange County Otters OCO
Offense Rating: 1.06 (2nd)
Defense Rating: 0.32 (5th)
QB Rating: -0.24 (10th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: 1.15

Projected Record: 9-7 (3rd Place in the ASFC)

The Otters look to take the excellent depth that they have been accumulating over the years and turn it into success. The Otters don't have many glaring weaknesses but don't have abundant strengths either. With an improvement in QB play, this roster is ready for Orange County to make a return to the playoffs.

Stars to Watch:
S Smokin Jay (@Beck)
LB Sim Sunigh (@SimmiZ)
OL Walrus Jones (@caravaggio)
CB Jamdrian LeBayers (@kenvald)
WR Big McLarge Huge (@Hydrium)
LB John Stark VIII (@UptownCord)
QB Lloyd Bannings (@bowl0)

3. ARI Arizona Outlaws ARI
Offense Rating: 0.96 (4th)
Defense Rating: -0.14 (7th)
QB Rating: 1.15 (T-1st)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: 1.97

Projected Record: 10-6 (2nd Place in the ASFC)

The Outlaws look to turn things around after a rare season in which they missed the playoffs. With one of the top quarterbacks in the league, a return to form is expected. If the defense can outperform expectations, watch out!

Stars to Watch:
QB Donovan Winters III (@zeagle1)
LB Sherwin Blue Jr. (@Kotasa)
RB Danny Nedelko (@Crunk)
OL Fortified Fridge (@"BaconBrother")
WR Benji Aguilera (@CROney3)
DT Sir Tywrell Xah'Aawrone (@Rabidsponge21)

2. BAL Baltimore Hawks BAL
Offense Rating: 0.92 (5th)
Defense Rating: 0.61 (3rd)
QB Rating: 0.51 (6th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: 2.03

Projected Record: 10-6 (1st Place in the NSFC)

The Hawks lost their main running backs from a season ago and have two rookies filling in their roles. Will that cause the prolific Baltimore offense to falter? On the defensive side, the Hawks look ready to reclaim the division crown with very few holes. A solid roster top to bottom, will the Hawks be able to challenge the Hahalua?

Stars to Watch:
CB Jake Williams (@dude_man)
DT MC Hammer (@Aneeqs)
QB Preston Beatz (@DarknessRising)
WR Shane Turnbull (@Symmetrik)
WR Rocky Moreaux (@qWest)
OL Bengal Tigerheart (@shanghai_kid)
LB Sledge Hammer (@H0PPY75)

1. HON Honolulu Hahalua HON
Offensive Rating: 1.43 (1st)
Defensive Rating: 2.49 (1st)
QB Rating: 0.61 (5th)

Total Dominator Preseason Score: 4.53

Projected Record: 13-3 (1st in the ASFC)

If the Ultimus was won based on TPE, we might as well give Honolulu the trophy now. Fielding the best offense and defense by a significant margin (especially on defense), anything but a repeat Ultimus will be a disappointment for the Hahalua. With stars up and down the roster, is it possible to put together a perfect season?

Stars to Watch:
LB Maxwell Jacob Friedman (@JuOSu)
CB Luigi Lanikai (@IceBear32)
DE Liv Elsathelookout (@Bayley)
DT Bridge Burner (@BOOM™)
QB Nova Montagne (@OrbitingDeath)
OL Raya Ho'opa'i (@MMFLEX)
CB Billy Jor-El (@LtHudz)
WR Florida Man (@nickyvmlp)
OL Remi Musgrave-Smythe (@37thchamber)
LB Liath Squirrel (@LiathTheSquirrel)
K Ray Baker (@jdc4654)
S Alita Battle Angel (@moonlight)

That's it for the preseason rankings! Let me know if you agree!
