Last season was an absolute disaster. I made the move to quarterback, thinking that I could be the piece that would send us back to the Ultimus, or at the very least, I could keep things intact so that we could remain a contender. Instead, everything fell apart. I wasn't ready for the big stage, and I played like hot garbage all season. I questioned myself constantly, was always second-guessing myself. Was this the right move? Did I screw up not only my own career, but the trajectory of the Sabercats franchise? Am I going to have to start all over? After the season ended, I did some soul searching, I traveled around, trying to find a new purpose. And I've come back to the sport reenergized. Refocused. Ready. The start of the season so far hasn't been ideal, but now, I'm learning from my mistakes instead of letting them get in my head. It's been hard to watch the tape and see myself struggle so much, but I'm getting better, and I promise, change is coming for the Sabercats. We won't be a laughing stock forever, and that change is coming soon.
Star running back Ashley Owens did a lot of team-bonding this offseason. After a tumultuous free agency in which Ashley Owens left the team - the Austin Copperheads - that drafted him first overall out of the DSFL just 2 seasons prior following a disappointing sophomore campaign, the Wisconsin native signed with a team much closer to home: the Colorado Yeti. During his visits with the team, he very much clicked with the players on the roster. However, Colorado wasn't even the only team wary that if Owens wouldn't play three years with the team that drafted him, would he anywhere else? (Yes) So, this offseason naturally was spent with Owens spending tons of times with players on the team, really making him a part of the Colorado Yeti family. The running back spent a lot Colorado's cool spring days with Wolfie McDummy, doing everything from endless practice of wheel routes, to taking McDummy on trips to Wisconsin to get some true Wisconsin cheese curds (a $14 million / 3 year contract pays for a lot). Of course, Ashley also got to know fellow RB Michael Vincent, young CB Louisiana Purchase, star receiver Lazlo Fourty-Two, and many more. At this point, Owens has left his past behind him and is all in with the Colorado Yeti.
So, personally this last season was a bit disappointing for me. Sunnycursed has always been a man on a mission for stats, and this season was no different. Sunnycursed had one of his best bids for Wide Receiver of the Year, but sadly fell short. His Hawks also fell short in the end. While he is not very worried about championship trophies, already having 3 in his career, It is still never fun to fall short in back to back seasons.
His new team, Yellowknife, has had a lot of issues of their own, and they are the opposite of Sunnycursed. They have had some storied players recently, some truly top notch players, and they have stuffed the individual trophy cabinets. However, that beautiful Ultimus has eluded them for a very long time. Falling short to Orange County was. the Otters, a storied team winning their record 7th Ultimus, Beating Yellowknife, hoping for just their first. The team has had a history of terrible upsets, and this new powerhouse has their sights set on beating this stigma once and for all. Sunnycursed and Yellowknife are both joining up, hoping they can each provide for each other. Sunny hopes to learn how to excel at his position with a coaching staff that has great experience with making great players, and the team hopes to add that championship touch with a player who has made 4 championship games and won 3 of them.
Rose Jenkins honestly has no optimism for this season. The team is raw and young. It's really been a shadow of the original plan laid out for the team. Maybe in time, things can heal, but for the moment there is no expectations in Chicago. Some have suggested tanking, but it wouldn't matter anyway since they wouldn't have a first round pick in the next draft. Things look bleak for the team and Rosie's lost any sense of optimism. But in that lack of optimism, she's found a different sort of enjoyment.
She's been studying. Not film, not the playbook, but absurdist literature. Finding purpose and meaning in a meaningless void of a season is probably one of the least publicized issues in sports. It's something that everyone around the team needs to deal with, from the players, to the fans, to even the journalists covering the team. But Rosie's made a decision to combat that malaise with philosophy. In absence of true unifying meaning, radical freedom is the only outcome. That freedom means that man is not beholden to anyone but themselves. You create your own goals and you work towards those same goals with what is within your power. While it would probably take a longer thesis to explain the intricacy of that idea, for Rosie it will involve setting personal goals and not worrying about overall team results for the year. Quote:"There is no such thing as a person who can call themselves truly not lonely. There are only those who choose to hide it."
After the playoff loss, I spent a lot of time at home with my family. Working with the team meant we hadn't spent quality time together in months. We went to Disneyland and to the beach in California. It was great to have the free time to be a father and a husband. With one month left until the season, it was back to training and watching film. I would wake up at 5 AM to work on covering route patterns with Saba and Kazimir. At 7:30 I would go to the gym to run 5 miles on the treadmill. At 8:15 it was weightlifting with the team. After the team workouts I would watch hours on hours of film from last season, especially on Franklin Armstrong's tendencies out of the pocket because he had torched us last year. Twice a week at around 4:00 we would run a 30 minute team scrimmage. We had offense and defense mimic plays from other teams last season to prepare for the season's matchups. I would get home around 8 o'clock after another workout session, eat dinner, then go to sleep at around 9 to get rest for tomorrow's workouts. The brutal offseason regimen helps keep me at playing weight and be prepared for the grind of the regular season.
Losing the Ultiminis game was really disappointing but there wasn't much time to focus on the loss as I had to immediately get ready for the NSFL draft. I worked out almost non stop, whether it was during the draft combine or for individual teams. During off time I did have I spent it going to see recovery specialists to help heal my body up for the next demanding season. I only had to wait a few weeks as it was finally draft time and my hard work paid off as I got drafted in the first round by the Yellowknife Wraiths. After that I had a few days to relax and celebrate before it was time for training camp. During training camp and preseason I was busy learning the new playbook, and getting gelled with my new teammates. Some of my new DL teammates have been showing me different drills and workouts to do to get ready for the season. It's been an adjustment everything is new, the players are faster, workouts are conducted down to basically a science but I've grown a lot since that last loss against Portland, I've gotten stronger, faster, I'm no longer a Marshal and now carving out my path in the pros.
